Must Our Future Be Digital?

theGamerBuzz writes, "Whether you like it or not, companies like iTunes and Steam are making big money off this digital form of media. Some will say that a physical copy will always exist as long as there is demand for it, but is this true?"

I think we will always have both forms of media but Digital could become increasingly popular over the years ahead.

Ranshak5553d ago

It already is the more popular form of media on PC atleast. Consoles need time to catch up like usual, id give the consoles 5-10years to catch up.

jim2wheels5553d ago (Edited 5553d ago )

Actually I think broadband needs to catch up more than consoles. Digital has flourished on the PC gaming scene because games are half the price. Nothing to do with consoles needing to catch up. They have the storage and the network functionality - I would say it's more of a cultural change needed.

Personally not a big fan of digital, just don't like having my content in the hands of the HDD gods.

Agreed jim2. At least in America our internet structure is complete crap. Not to mention the consoles need to upgrade their storage. PS3 is on the right track. Not so much with the Xbox. The Wii is sort of on the right path, problem is I haven't seen any 100+gb SD cards.

Maybe a console gen or two in the future they will be fast enough to not have ridiculously long install times, and boast a large enough HD(or give the option to upgrade to one) that won't be full after a few games.

download a 50GB game I think not

Dojan1235553d ago

I like steam because I can move my copies around to new systems without any major problems. Plus, they have a record of my games.

The real issues will be when consumers experince a company that goes under or changes thier rules.

BeastlyRig5553d ago (Edited 5553d ago )

yeah as long as everything stays stable it's fine!

Gabe is great!! Imagine if activision owned steam!
we are lucky it's Gabe!

I prefer hard copy of anything I buy for my PC at least you have some rights when you buy from a shop. Almost none from digital download.
Plus I can sell some products(games) once I've done with it with a hard copy. You can't do that with any digital copy.
I don't understand the pricing of digital products. Why are they the same price as a hard copy and why do they hold there price for so long.
What will happen if a company goes out of business lets say EA (I know wishful thinking) and you've purchased a few of their product from steam or any other company like steam what problems would that cause for the customer.
What about if someone gets into your account.

For me I feel there are too many gray areas so I'll stay away from digital downloads for a while, I'm not saying it's all bad but I can see more bad than good at the moment.

present already is for some of us ;)

I like my digital collection, i'm fine with no-box and the salad leaf.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing27d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9227d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit27d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing27d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9227d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
