Frostbite 2.0 tech break down and video

DICE has released the first few tech details on Frostbite 2.0, BF3 Blog explains what those mean for BF3, and what "real-time radiosity" can be used for (e.g. day/night cycle during a single gameplay session)

It would be cool if they put an option to set the ratio of day in-game to real time.

like you can set 20 minutes in real-time to be a 24 hour cycle in-game.....

Realtime radiosity (a form of HDR), powered by the Enlighten middleware engine, previously used in God of War 3 for the PS3

PC learning from PS3. who woulda thunk :)

Maybe everyone can finally admit GOW3 had amazing lighting now..

How would that equal learning from PS3?

It's a middleware solution, not some patented Sony technology...

FYI, Enlighten is also an (possibly new) integrated feature in the Unreal Engine 3.

Dude just about everything seen in consoles has been used in PC's 5 years before hand be that the hardware of even most of the software used in current gen console games.

The Playstation 3 is becoming more like a PC day by day, web browser, media hub, wi-fi, facebook, VoIP, friends lists with inviting friends to games (steam).

If PC games did happen to take anything from the PS3 at all then I wouldn't be for the PS3 taking 40 things back.

Am not saying your wrong but the PS3 has done a lot more learning from the PC then the PC ever has from the PS3.

Don't read too much into the PC learning from PS3 comment & get all bent out of shape, Its just middleware & Up to dev to implement.

I'm saying that its specifically referring to GOW3's lighting, and everyone is going insane over it(realtime radiosity). In other threads.

I'm saying that lots of people try to downplay GOW3's lighting, and how unremarkable it is. Yet, this PC dev is talking about GOW3.

Panda,Yes Unreal engine 3, with dx11 on a pc *** nothing to do with consoles unlike GOW3's use of it, running on a console. Console unreal engine is a sad limited engine.

no one said it was used in GOW3 first or that first means anything, just the fact that it was used in GOW3, and it highlights a great feature of the lighting engine, which they are adopting for their title.

I love how some nerds get crazy about frostbite 2.0 and the lighting technics used in it (radiosity) as if Dice did "invent" it and how it can only be done in teh PCs and nowhere else. The same people got themselves owned after figuring out that GOW3 already used it and the "Geomrics Enlighten" enigne is compatible with any graphical engine even the aging "Unreal Engine 3".
Now they claim that Monkey Island on floppy disks on dinosaur PCs used it way back in the 80s. I love the way they find reasons so they can sleep at nights ! ;)

LMAO Quake 2 was the first game with radiosity.The major use of OpenGL in Quake 2 was radiosity

Yeah it would be an interesting feature. It would be very cool to play in a night-day cycle. It makes the combat more thrilling.

now I remember the difference beaten night and day maps on GRAW 2 was incredible... that game used and had a stellar approach towards shadowing and lighting.

Get rid of campaigns, move the game to mobile, and try to compete with warzone. They would save time and money.

Whether it comes through remakes or a new game with a similar style, DICE should aim to revive the glory days of Battlefield 3 and Bad Company 2.
