get rid of the ps2, its holding the ps3 back in hardware and software sales (look at ps2 and ps3 madden 08 sales), and "IMO" the best way to sell a ps3 is to have it on sale = lower price

the games are coming. And games DO in fact TIME. But the games are definitely here and more so, are coming.

Price is the key factor. We all know, well most of us know, that the main driving of any console is it's price. A majority of consumers don't buy a new console until it's priced at $150-200. Even at $250 it's a major driving factor in selling units. Not to say the PS3 isn't worth every penny they're asking but the price is simply to much for the average consumer and in an entirely different league than the majority of consumers who buy consoles for themselves and/or their kids. But the Price is the obvious factor slowing down the PS3.

Not only the price of the console but just as much [overstatement] is the price of games. Sure on the surface it looks like they're only $10 more per title but that adds up. And consider this. A bulk of games this past generation were not worth $40-50 and a bulk of games this current generation aren't either. Yet now they have us forking out $10+ tax more each title we buy. Then there's these big selling games which drop the price rather quickly and even larger selling games who can and should charge less but continue to milk the consumer. Also we have the flop, the game that doesn't sell nearly as good as planned so the price is chopped in a matter of months. Why buy games for $60? You can wait a few months and get them for $40. The price point of software is likely affecting the potential consumer as much as the price of these consoles are [both 360 and PS3]...

Eliminate the PS2? I have to disagree with that. People who are now buying and continue to buy PS2 as a console and it's games are people who WILL NOT be buying a PS3 anytime soon. Even if the PS3 were only $300 or $400 a majority of consumers who are buying the PS2 now wouldn't be buying a PS3 anyway. So that argument is pointless...

The two main factors are easily price and games. And one could argue bad publicity and false facts floating around about the PS3. Like these idiots who think a HDTV is required for a PS3 or 360.

drop the ps2-why would sony want to drop all that money?they are not in a rush like microsoft is.it's 10 months for ps3.get money and royalties on 100+ million people and devs or drop them and hope 5-6 million ps3 owners and devs can sustain you as a company.hhhmmmmmm......

emotion engine-emulation always gets better through time.and most of the big games work perfectly.99% ps1/60-70% ps2 and climbing.of course,i have the launch model.so this doesn't concern me.

i agree on having one worldwide sku.this multiple options from both sony and microsoft are confusing to the public.which is why nintendo is not doing it.

GT5 and killzone never had a release date.how can they be pushed back from no known date?big name hits are out and will come out for ps3.

and last,sony's job is to get third parties to release games on ps3 to compliment what they are making themselves.and make it easier for devs to make games.not to buy everyone off.you can't buy friends.just ask MC HAMMER.....

I'm not sure about the addition of the Emotion Engine, but I do agree with the point about how Sony should retire the PS2. Many multiplatform games are release on the Xbox 360 and the Wii, but on the PS2 instead of the PS3 because it is easier to make games for the PS2 than for the PS3. Also, unlike the Xbox and the Gamecube, the PS2 is in competition with the PS3. And yes, while I do admit that the Xbox 360 has a better line-up of exclusives than the PS3 does(not a more diverse line-up though), both consoles have a strong line-up of exclusives in comparison to the Wii.

IMO all that Sony need:

1) Final Fantasy VII
2) Metal Gear Solid 4
3) Killzone 2
4) Final Fantasy XIII
5) The first sandbox game that takes full advantage of blu-ray

After that Sony will be selling very well, yes a price drop might help, but with those games they have loyal fans (FF & MGS) and impressed with Killzone 2. The sandbox game would show that the storage can and will make a difference (size of map / non-repetative graphics / freedom to roam where-ever you want).

1- Price drop to $399.99 With Rumble Controller (this will end the battle in Europe for sure) Japans battle is already over and it will create a fair fight in North America.

2- Access To XMB during Gameplay

3- Playstation Home

4- More PSN content example more PS1 games and Arcade games

5- Metal Gear Solid 4 (Its not just one game but THEE one game to add on top of the other great games to fully solidify the system! In addition it is the ONE game that will make atleast 2.5 million of 360 owners cross over! Which will tighten up the market share in North America for sure.

Killzone 2 is the most technicaly advance FPS to ever grace a home console. It will sale systems and stop anyone in there tracks!

It is a fantastic title to only add to the playstation 3's library.

2007 will end with heavy momentum, 2008 is Victory!

if Sony drops the price to 399 soon and across the world, it will pass up the 360 maybe even wii. if sony does nothing to get to 399 this year, and 360 drops its price again by 50, then it will be a close race. IMO, MS had the chance to own this gen last fall, when the could have reduced the premium to $299 (as of last fall, MS had cut the costs of producing the 360 prem. to around $340, so the loss of selling it at $299 would not have been that high, not nearly as high as the loss the PS3 is sold for)

2 of the points made in this article are incorrect, the one that says to retire the PS2, and the one that says to get star titles out the door faster.

First of all, the PS2 is making TONS of money for Sony and with a 100+ million install base, games still sell on the PS2.

Second of all, getting star titles out the door FASTER? Rushing the titles will only make them less of a "star" title.

Otherwise, the other points made in this article are pretty valid.

he nailed it. hold the software developers accountable for release dates. dont let Square Enix take an extra 2.5 Years to release Final Fantasy, like they did on the PSP. If you start putting the pressure on the devs, they will either drop PS3 support (good, if they can keep up) or start "meeting deadlines"

But the 2 major ones for me.
1. Reduce price to compareable level to competition.
Although there is no question of the value you get for $499 with all the features that is packed in. PS3 is in the end is frist and foremost a gaming device more so than a media hub in most consumers minds. That imo is the reason why most people are having trouble forking out 499 for "a gaming" device which most were used to paying 300 at most for previous generation gamming consoles.

2. Bing out more PS3 developed internal exclusive games that will showcase PS3 capabilities and sets it apart from competition.
There is no question that this generation will see less and less 3rd parties exclusives as imo Sony will not dominate the market like previous years so alot of pressure will be on internal studios to make up the hole left by 3rd parties exclusives going mulit-plat. If sony internal studios bring out more guality games like GOW, ICO and sing star. It will boost not only PS3 sales but also puts them in a good position for next generation.

Drop the price further. The 360 is going to continue to blow PS3 out of the water in sales as long as the price is $500-$600. Why would anyone want to pay $150 extra for a console with far fewer games and worse versions of shared titles?

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

So now there's certifiable proof that Ryan was in fact "fired", as opposed to when it was first announced that he "retired", in order to save face.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
