What Japanese Devs Really Think

Creators industrywide sound off on platforms, the Kinect, and Western games.

AGamerOfConsoles5649d ago (Edited 5649d ago )

Its a good read. I can understand why Japanese devs shift so much towards handhelds. They are cheaper and have a much bigger market. I am interested to see how 3DS and PSP 2 do there.

I wouldn't say that handhelds will out do consoles though because perhaps the most important factor of a handheld is battery life.

One thing I thoroughly agree with though is that Japanese devs do not need to change to Western cultures. Changing DMC like that is actually making matters worse. Always consider the core fanbase and your games should do fine.

I feel it depends on the team and direction they choose.
Team Ninja I feel was a bad choice but a company like Mercury Steam (Spanish) could make a better game taking in the current fan-base for DMC and some newcomers; like seen with Castlevania LoS.

Let's ask Japanese Devs why they keep remaking the same games. DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball for the PSP and the upcoming DOA for 3DS. All with the same graphics design and same voice actors. Nothing has changed. Let's just give them the same game again. The Next Tekken game. Yep, the same game. There's no thinking outside the box. There's no innovation and since very few complain and buy the same shit again. They keep making the same shit over and over again. It's a vicious cycle.

But for fighting games, all the fans really want is much of the same, except maybe for a few new moves/combos to master, a couple of new characters and depending on the series, more of the storyline revealed to them.

DelbertGrady5649d ago

Call of Duty says hello :)

There are lots of creative Japanese devs out there, just as there are western. Suda 51, Shinji Mikami, Fumito Ueda etc.

Orionsangel5648d ago

Oh yeah I know you're right and I'm not a big fan of FPS games for that same reason. I agree Fumito Ueda is awesome, but it just sucks he takes him decades to make just one game.

Robearboy5649d ago

Japanese devs have become irrelivant really outside the handheld/wii market.I can count on one hand the amount of Top quality games that have been released on the x360/ps3 which is a shame when you think of the awesomeness they showed last gen

School girls, Big swords, Talking animals, Hentai and Godzilla.

with 16 bit sprites, rest on your laurels for a decade, regurgitate the same IP over another 10 years in a series of remakes, remixes, and reboots, and you've got the recipe for Japanese game development.

Want proof? Look no further than Nintendo and the 3DS. Their launch lineup consists of 1 reboot and 3 remakes.

japanese devs make more innovations than west..look at Okami, Viewtiful Joe, Vanquish, Bayonetta, Kirby's epic yarn, No more heroes, super mario galaxy 2, metal gear solid titles... it's not another "go go go!", "fire in a hole" like COD, HALO or GEARS.. (go go japanese) :) don't make westish games! :) can't say that there aren't good west games too (god of war series, they are fun but same mechanics, only better graphics and boss titans battles with good visuals...heavy rain is great too, but too many FPS'es) :/

visualb5649d ago

you missed shadow of the colossus and Ico

point is, here in the west we think we are the sh!t just because games sell more

well, thats because we have a bigger market over all (western market > asian market atm)

but to insult japanese devs is stupid

to say japan repeats the same crap again n again can be said for the west as well *looks at 1000 FPS's with macho men, multiplayer and a stupid single player*

yeah sure we're so much more original /s

When logic meets EA it generates anti-matter ..... so try not to apply it in any meaningful way. Entropy is what matters in there !!

The community warned them this would happen but nope they knew better they continued with the live service push the made the art style cartoonish and this is the result

isarai_lee124d ago

It's always so bizarre when studios announce something super early in development under the suggestion of forming the game to player feedback, and then they push against all feedback heading straight for the cliff while everyone is warning them along the way

lol ya think? they're sending all that work to the cheaper labor market as soon as possible. and FYI, that labor market has exploded in the last 5-10 years. They have enough people to replace every single job. But honestly, EA is over filled with useless upper management as it is. You could probably trim 25% of their staff with no real loss in production. They aren't gamers, they're business execs. Just look at how many AI related jobs they're already starting to post. Its also hilarious that PIF owns Battle field 6

Wait,

The same congress that attacked Lina Khan when she fought the Microsoft Activision purchase.
The same congress that allowed Disney to buy 90% of Fox
The same congress that allowed Liv Golf to buy the PGA
The same congress that sits back while Paramount tries a hostile takeover despite losing the bid for Warner Bros.

NOW, the suddenly cares about doing what's "right" for works? Yeah, right.

No. There were elections and some of the scum were replaced.

TheColbertinator158d ago

Different elections. Different scum. Same results.

i know its a long shot, but i hope this gets shot down.

EA now owned by The Saudis and Ubisoft to inevitably be owned by China. In hindsight, once EA and Ubisoft started having their financial woes, they should have pulled a Koei Tecmo/Bandai Namco by merging their operations into one.
