Why I'm Glad Mass Effect 3 is Strictly a Single Player Experience

"The rumor had been going around for the last few days that Bioware was going to add in some sort of multi-player component to their recently announced Mass Effect 3. Today, however, that rumor was debunked on their official forums. There, people had been talking about the possibility for a long time. Other single-player experiences had been diverted into multi-player games recently, as well, including highly popular franchises like Uncharted, Bioshock and Assassin’s Creed. While some of these worked well, many were left feeling lackluster. Was the addition of multi-player to blame? I’m not going to answer that here. What I am going to talk about is why I think it’s a good thing that Mass Effect 3 will not be including a multi-player component."

Games like Mass Effect, Fallout, and Elder Scrolls are all about strong narratives and characters you can actually believe and care about. The same connections cannot be made with a buddy on the other end. Rather than tacking on an unnecessary multiplayer component, those genius' at bioware are better off focusing on bringing the best ME3 that they can deliver.

I personally think there should be more split screen coop games, but I do like when games do not tack on mutliplayer as an after thought.

Mystogan5688d ago

Same here Multiplayer would be cool for Mass Effect..Co-op that is, No Deathmatches.

Chadness5688d ago

Co-op might be interesting, because that's basically driving the story along, it isn't some random multi-player that really makes no sense in a story setting (like Uncharted 2's MP). So that would be interesting.

But, I'm happy with it just being a SP experience.

NYC_Gamer5688d ago

story based rpgs should be kept sp only

JoelT5688d ago

Thats my sentiments exactly.

thevokillist5688d ago

Exactly! The world is so big and there is so much to do, there isn't a need for a multiplayer experience.

booni35688d ago

I think if they put the neccessary thought and time into, just about any single player game can have multiplayer, which is healthy for longevity in the title. I for one am a little disappointed by Bioware's decision. I feel like they're rushing game out and thus is why there will be no multiplayer. Mass Effect could EASILY integrate multiplayer, but oh well.

thevokillist5688d ago

I know of a bunch of games that have been ruined by the addition of multiplayer... even if the game could integrate it, it may not be the best solution for wanting to play a game longer...

Chadness5688d ago

I highly disagree with your statement that it is required for the "longevity of the title".

Absolutely not. Most of the iconic games in history have been single player, and people still play them. I can guarantee people put more time into a game like Oblivion over the last five years than they have into any single Call of Duty title, collectively.

You think a game that doesn't include MP is rushing when a new one comes out every two years, yet one that comes out every year (like a Halo or a Call of Duty) takes its time? What are you smoking? ;)

booni35688d ago (Edited 5688d ago )

The first part of your statement falls victim to one reality- I didn't say it was required for longevity, i said it was healthy.
;D
And i know COD games drop like every few minutes but they don't really contain huge areas to explore and things to discover, NPCs, stories, etc.like a Mass Effect game. If they were to postpone the release a little while and put some effort into multiplayer, then it could be really good. All the groundwork appears to be done with the classes and what not. A little balancing, a few game play modes and it'd be tight.

JoelT5688d ago

Game's like these have longevity in the form of DLC and expansions. I can name like 10 titles off the top of my head that should have never included multiplayer. And I think that their single player campaigns suffered because of it.

When logic meets EA it generates anti-matter ..... so try not to apply it in any meaningful way. Entropy is what matters in there !!

The community warned them this would happen but nope they knew better they continued with the live service push the made the art style cartoonish and this is the result

isarai_lee136d ago

It's always so bizarre when studios announce something super early in development under the suggestion of forming the game to player feedback, and then they push against all feedback heading straight for the cliff while everyone is warning them along the way

US Lawmakers Urge Review Of EA Sale

The Congressional Labor Caucus sent a letter to the FTC warning the debt-financed, largely PIF-owned deal could be bad news for workers

lol ya think? they're sending all that work to the cheaper labor market as soon as possible. and FYI, that labor market has exploded in the last 5-10 years. They have enough people to replace every single job. But honestly, EA is over filled with useless upper management as it is. You could probably trim 25% of their staff with no real loss in production. They aren't gamers, they're business execs. Just look at how many AI related jobs they're already starting to post. Its also hilarious that PIF owns Battle field 6

Wait,

The same congress that attacked Lina Khan when she fought the Microsoft Activision purchase.
The same congress that allowed Disney to buy 90% of Fox
The same congress that allowed Liv Golf to buy the PGA
The same congress that sits back while Paramount tries a hostile takeover despite losing the bid for Warner Bros.

NOW, the suddenly cares about doing what's "right" for works? Yeah, right.

No. There were elections and some of the scum were replaced.

Different elections. Different scum. Same results.

i know its a long shot, but i hope this gets shot down.

EA now owned by The Saudis and Ubisoft to inevitably be owned by China. In hindsight, once EA and Ubisoft started having their financial woes, they should have pulled a Koei Tecmo/Bandai Namco by merging their operations into one.
