Halve the number of adverts, halve the number of Z grade jokes which i found either pointlessly obnoxious or exceptionally patronising, give the show a lot more intelligence. No need for pretentiousness, just acknowledge viewers are educated. With this will come credibility where these awards have MEANING.

Which is rather the point of award shows and awards in general. Doesn't actually matter if you give out a piece of paper or a solid gold diamond covered statue, what counts is building up credibility and genuine desirability for a coveted award.

When people watching and people involved genuinely see the awards as an accomplishment or aspiration then you are likely to have yourselves an unmissable event for the millions and millions of gamers out there....

Nah, E3 is a geekfest. You get to go demo games, meet developers, get swag, and hang out with people you normally only talk to on the Web. And there's a lot that happens at E3 that doesn't make it to the Web (parties and meals with various developers and the such).

I’ve never watched the VGAs personally. I actually kinda miss the days when E3 was the premiere source for new game news. Now games are being exposed in a trickle-down effect that just kills the buzz for me.

You're absolutely correct, Spunnups, it was a terrible show, and it had terrible ratings, but to play Devil's Advocate here: 16 and Pregnant had 2.091 million viewers last night: http://tvbythenumbers.zap2i...

Does that make it a good show? Hehe, not at all, of course, but I think Spike is just catering to the wrong age group. At least that horrid show I mentioned above knows its audience enough to get them watching, however vapid that audience tends to be.

Maybe Spike should get over the whole "13-year-olds that still have to substitute Maxim for porn - those poor souls - totally love this show!" kick and appeal to actual gamers next time.

maybe if every gaming-site and blog didn't have their own list, and VGA would/could get a number of really respected journalists/reviewers of respected gaming sites to decide for the winner. Maybe they have a shot in a few years to get the ratings up again.

Well what do you expect when you have a good majority of hosts that dont know crap about video games.

If they actually had a little more gaming elements put into it, and not have crap bands like My Chemical Romance.

Though I did like how they had the song from RDR on there, that and the reveals were like the only good parts of the show.

The reveals are the only reason people watch it, mainly because its just a glorified version of what every other gaming website does for Video game awards.

Spike's Idea of a Good Awards Show:

1) Hire celebrity guests who don't even know how to spell "PS3".
2) Make an obscene amount of sex jokes, because all gamers will surely snicker at the word "boobs".
3) Have a live band perform. That just SOUNDS like a fantastic idea for a video game show.
4) Fudge the votes, so that the nominee with the most expensive acceptance video wins.
5) Don't censor the dialogue. People will think we're cool for using strong language!
6) For the love of humanity, HIRE NEIL PATRICK HARRIS! He was in that one hamburger movie! lol so kewl!!!1!!

The VGA's...Its a love hate thing for me.

I love that gaming has a televised awards show.
I hate what inevitably ends up as the final product.

I love that they have tons of new game trailers.
I hate that the show focuses so much on the game trailer reveals.

I love the expectation/build up of all the possible reveals.
I hate that all those reveals get leaked the week before.

I love having comedic types with gaming backgrounds MC the show.
I hate the countless stiff celebrities/gaming people they add in that have zero stage presence or public speaking skills.

I love seeing developers getting recognized.
I hate Spike turning it into a teeny bopper, look at this cool music guest, fart joke excuse of a timeslot.

Problem with the VGA's is that they cater to the Mainstream gamer. And the Mainstream gamer only cares about 1 thing, Mainstream games. They don't care about the reveals or anything else cause as long as they get their CoD fix every year then they're okay and won't care about anything else other then "How good is the next CoD going to be?". I gave up on the show after they had the cast from Jersey Shore show up. After that, done and wrap, no need to even watch this trash anymore.

It was fine really. A lot of people surprised about Overwatch won GOTY which doesn't suprise to me really. I knew it was coming. Fan art, cosplay and fan base are huge. Even Overwatch is the most people played time.

I don't disagree with you but I don't know if game of the year should be given to a game which is entire conceptual identity is based on another game that's almost 10 years old...and still current mind you.

Sorry but not sure it's enough to say it was the best game of the year which I believe should hold weight in regards to being conceptually creative.

In no way shape or form can we say OverWatch is conceptually creative if it's essentially copying another game.

To create is to make something and I do not believe that blizzard created the concept of that game clearly that was already done with Team Fortress 2

They simply made a version of another idea that's a very hard for me to say is worth game of the year.

If anybody was to consider if there were possibly paid off this might be one of the most genuine times to think that because I find it very very hard to believe that the majority of the industry believes this was the best game this year.

A good game yes, to say game of the year is to say it's doing something that is absolutely above and beyond in regards to creativity and it's hard to say creativity for me from a team that created a game from a concept that was not their own...

It is kind of pathetic. As gamers, we don't need marketing like this, in what's supposed to be an award show.
In a entertainment medium that generates revenues on par with movies and music, I don't understand why video game entertainment isnt recognized in other award shows.
There are a couple a year, that slip my mind. However, these are shows that honor Music, Movies, and Television. Maybe they have added videogame honors as of late and i'm behind the eight ball on this one.
I feel as though the "VGA'S" are treated as a niche event. Therefore we get, what we get. I wonder what would be different if they were broadcast through MTV, or even a network like FOX or NBC?

Well for one thing they would get commercials which would pay for the event to happen, commercials which cost a lot more since more people are watching. Think of how much ad-time at the Superbowl costs, and that's because of the audience each commercial gets. The only way that Geoff Keighley can produce the awards is with corporate sponsorship, and with not as many people watching The Game Awards, the ads sell for less money, which means there have to be more of them to pay for the show. Since the commercials are usually taking the form of new game reveals and promotions however, that's a lot more palatable to the video game audience than it would be to a network audience watching ads for dish soap and car insurance, so at least we can be thankful for that.

Unfortunately gaming is still a very expensive medium.

I completely agree with you we're just not in the era of gaming where we can have an award show that's like that one day but right now we're just not 100% there yet.

In my personal opinion we need an award show that has the Integrity to not accept any paid marketing to suggest that their decisions were swayed in any way shape or form by special interest.

If the companies want to Market that's why we have commercials for but that should not be time taken away from the award show itself.

I completely agree with you though I could not say the vgas or anything near what those other award shows are

There have been some decent vgas in the past. The last couple of years seem to have gone backwards. I didn't even think about "paid influence!" ....I'm gonna look at the vga's now and online sites like "ign" through a different lens from now on. I suppose the most integral "best of the year" awards will be the gamer votes, not the media publications

Overwatch is great... But it's no Uncharted. The story, character interactions, visuals and attention to detail are simply greater in Uncharted. My guess is that you don't own Uncharted 4.

The majority people are of the opinion that Uncharted 4 > Overwatch.

Except OverWatch is concept is basically Team Fortress 2 I'm sorry but any spinning or dissecting of that comment in regards to the nuances is irrelevant....

At the end of the day you have a class-based game with some of the exact same classes like engineer that are making sentrys with the objectives that are essentially the same from Team Fortress 2.

That alone is why I could not put this game as the best game of this year because the idea behind this game is already the concept of another game regardless of the nuances that they have the base of it is Team Fortress 2.

So many other more creative and deserving games in regards to technical achievements and New Concepts deserve that award.

This seriously sounds like blizzard paid them to win this award and it wouldn't Shock Me even slightly.

I just don't see many outlets giving this game game of the year in a year where a final fantasy and Uncharted released

FF15 wasn't nominated because of its release date so I won't talk about it but by your logic why should Uncharted 4 have won when its the 5th game in the franchise and follows the same concept and basic premise of its 4 predecessors? What's so creative about Uncharted 4?

Exactly. It is ran by jeff keeley who was part of gametrailers for years so that tells you something. I liked GT but they had their heads up their collective @$$ 90% of the time
