Bioware working with Obsidian?

Bioware working with Obsidian on Mass Effect spinoff? Compare this two pictures.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

It's so typical of Obsidian to leech off of successful franchises rather than making a name for themselves.

Neckbear5663d ago (Edited 5663d ago )

BioWare's best games were co-developed with Obsidian/Black Isle (Or well, part of their staff at least).

@Blacktric

If I'm not wrong, Baldur's Gate 1/2 (Or well, the 2nd one is the one I'm sure they worked at together), the first KOTOR (The second one was fully developed by Obsidian), among others I don't really remember at the moment.

Well, that's if I'm not wrong, though. I'm quite sure I am not.

Editan at your edit:

I'm quite sure they are. As I said, part of Obsidian/Black Isle's staff worked in those games, and in fact, both BioWare and Black Isle were pretty close back in the day, sharing engines (Planescape: Torment, for example, was developed on Baldur's Gate engine) and different staff members.

We also saw that with KOTOR, but said companionship kinda vanished as years passed.

...As far as I remember, that's it.

Blacktric5663d ago (Edited 5663d ago )

Like what? We all know what KOTOR 2 and Neverwinter Nights 2 turned into. On topic: the answer is no they're not. There is also an Atari game (probably a 2600 one) hidden between transitions around 0:07-0:08.

Edit: Yes, but they didn't work with the full staff. They were partially involved and those projects were supervised by Bioware, not Obsidian. Look at their latest games since the mid 2000's. They made sequels for KOTOR, Neverwinter Nights and Fallout and they were just decent, not mindblowing. Hell, look at Alpha Protocol.

NWN2 was built on a shitty engine.

Why would Obsidian build a new engine for a ME game? They won't. They won't do anything but content for an established franchise now. There's really nothing to worry about except first party titles with questionable engines from Obsidian, give them boundaries and a decent budget and they are fine.

tplarkin75663d ago

They did an amazing job with KOTOR 2. The only issue was the plot twist which killed off the coolest evil character (which was on the cover).

I stand by my claim that Obsidian is a mediocre developer.

All of Obsidian's good games were sequels to already existing franchises.

Kotor 2 was the sequel to Kotor 1, made by Bioware.

Obsidian barely changed anything for Kotor 2. They kept the same engine, they wrote a shittier story, and they didn't even complete the game.

Same thing for Fallout New Vegas.

It's time people realize that Obsidian are just parasites. I don't care if they're made up of people who used to work for a good studio. Those guys are still has-beens. They make slightly mediocre sequels to great games and those sequels are hardly improved.

Obsidian is the B Team, the Treyarch.

And if you want to prove me wrong, then do it in a more civil manner. Don't just ramble on about how I'm wrong or am a zealot or whatever.

I'm not a zealot. I don't really get on Bioware's nuts for anything. I criticize them a lot for not making a proper Kotor sequel instead of MMO.

But I plenty of proof that Obsidian is a parasite studio. And if this rumor is true, it will confirm my belief that much more.

RockmanII75663d ago

Thats in insult to Treyarch

kaveti66165663d ago

Treyarch aren't very good, either. They might be if they left Activision and worked on a different IP using a different engine, but for now they're the B team.

Obsidian is free to go where they please. And that's why they usually gravitate towards successful IPs and somehow, I know not how, they get to make sequels to great games. And the fact is that if there's a game out there that's a 9.0 to a 9.5 on the quality scale, all the publishers are content with Obsidian being brought in to make a 8.0 sequel because the game will sell on name alone.

And that 8.0 quality is not achieved by Obsidian. They just make the same game with the same graphics and the same gameplay with a slightly different storyline, and no one's the wiser.

Quagmire5664d ago

It would be great if they worked on Alpha Protocol 2. That game had great ideas, just executed very poorly, and is practically right up Bioware's alley.

showtimefolks5663d ago

but could have been 9.5 if they would have fixed few things

but don't we say the same thing about every game they work on its never tehir fault but blame the publisher. sega even delayed the game like 5 or 6 months for polish i mean come on

story wise they always are spot on just like NT story wise they can give you the game gameplay wise both are in teh same boat

soundslike5663d ago

the problem is the budget. they only get enough money to execute their ideas by working for other people, hopefully they eventually gain rights to a solid engine in the future to ground a new IP.

FLOWCity5663d ago

Agreed, if you looked passed it's flaws then it was a great experience.

dkblackhawk505663d ago

o.o you have to look at the images yourself to see...damn

Lekumkee5663d ago

With Obisidian on we can all expect the game will be buggy as hell.

Sarcasm5663d ago

Nah, it's just the nature of the engine with Fallout 3. If anyone's to blame, it's Bethesda.

Mass Effect - N7 DAY 2025

Bioware writes: "Like you, we’ve heard the rumors lately. You’ve made it clear you care deeply about what’s next. So let’s start by setting the record straight: the next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe."

I expected nothing and I'm still disappointed

Like with Fallout, it's starting to feel studios are using TV / Film adaptations when they have no game info to talk about.

toxic-inferno194d ago

I feel the same way.

I mean, how difficult would it be for them to release SOMETHING of substance? Another short trailer? A couple of proper hints? A short story set during the original trilogy, but focused on fringe characters?

Hopefully they're working so hard on the game that they don't have time. But still, with every passing year and so little to show, the franchise will be slipping further and further from people's minds.

Profchaos194d ago

Yeah agree it's almost a cop out since Dev times are 5 to 10 years just throw out a few seasons instead you get them done in a year

jznrpg194d ago

I still haven’t beat Andromeda. I am waiting for a lull of good games in my backlog

P_Bomb194d ago

So the TV show will take place after the OG trilogy. I wonder which ending they’ll use?

Rebel_Scum194d ago

Should’ve just posted a picture of an Elcor saying “regretfully, we have nothing to share.”

BioWare needs to follow Larian’s lead and just “embrace people’s cool choices”, veteran EA developer

Speaking on a recent episode of the FRVR Podcast, veteran EA developer Alex Hutchinson—who worked on The Sims 2, Spore and Army of Two: The 40th Day—explained that the studio is already no longer the studio fans fell in love with, but it should be safe from censorship of its games’ political beliefs.

Who didn’t see this coming lol

Armaggedon194d ago

BioWare should find the center and focus. Chasing someone else’s shadow will likely lead to failure.

What the EA deal could mean for BioWare, The Sims, and more

If you’re worried about EA’s future, you’re in good company. The acquisition is unprecedented on many levels, and it throws the future of EA's studios and some of its biggest franchises —including BioWare, The Sims, Apex Legends, and Battlefield — into doubt. Industry analysts have varying predictions about what could come next. However, there are a few constants — namely, that EA will likely implement large-scale spending reductions and sell off its less profitable studios.

thorstein224d ago

How can you be an analyst and not look at Tencent and know exactly what's about to happen: massive layoffs, decline in quality, and loss revenue.

It is Toys R Us all over again, and JCPenney and Sears and so many more. EA lost is vision before 2000. It's an old stodgy corporation. It's not going to recover.

Retroman224d ago

If Ea sell studio that develop NFS wishful thinking Saudi investers put Blackbox studio back together. get rid of online racing, drive to a race or no races at all wasting time playing nfs for NO reason at all thanks to Unbound, Heat, Payback, Rivals.

anast224d ago

They'll start working on FIFA, Madden, UFC, and some mobile games.

gold_drake224d ago

i think that games that are not Sports games or Shooters will cease to exist, since they are the big money makers.

not sure why anyone would agree to this. especially to rich saudis of all people ha they have more money than they'll ever need
