$500 million spent on marketing will make any product successful. You spend that much marketing a Uwe Boll movie and you'd have people lining up for midnight showings across the country. You have to understand, whether it's good or not doesn't matter. Microsoft spends all this cash on marketing so they can project the image of success. Why do you think they're throwing launch parties with C-list celebs in Beverly Hills? It's a safe bet that no one in that room knows anything about gaming aside from the Microsoft employees. It's all about image.

I'm really curious about how kinect will adapt to a real gamer's crowd (which we know are though one). If they just target the casual... well I will be even more happy with my ps3... and the move... maybe they will send less (in north america) but they will develop game I really want !

I think so, it'll certainly sell well, it should open up the console to new demographics, help squash the "hardcore" stigma some place on the 360.

Will it get those pad loving FPS gamers to put that pad down, with it's current software offerings, I dont think so, but who knows what the future will bring.

It better. Microsoft has shifted their focus on the 360 from hardcore gaming, to snagging the casuals, and with 1/2 billion dollars to accomplish that task, failure would be devastating.

yea its gonna sell with its massive marketing budget well placed commercials (even tho the one i just saw during the football game was a wii rip off lol) celebrity endorsements that will surely entice soccer moms and the like. i still find it weird that the core xbox owners the ones willing to pay for xbox live and its content have essentially been put on the back burner so microsoft can attempt to get the casual crowd. i know they said there will be hardcore games but with the majority of xbox owners being hardcore gamers i woulda thought they'd cater to those gamers needs first instead of taking the risk of the casual route

With all of the money and hype built around it, you would have to be blind not believe so. Initially, through the holiday season and into next year, it will be successful.

However, I believe the long run will be a different story. I am not an expert nor an industry insider, but in my gaming opinion, I feel that it will go the way of the wii with large interest at first, and then not enough enjoyable games (or only a few every once in a while, still not enough to justify getting it) to keep it going.

I also agree with many of the posters above, we are not the audience for Kinect, and it does not interest me at all. But other people seem interested.

My opinion is still out on both the Move and Kinect though. Have not tried either, and would like to try both. But they just don't seem to interest me, or at least not yet. The ever increasing trend of catering to "casuals" is something that I am not a fan of as a gamer.

What I would like Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony to do is remember who, in the long run, will be buying and enjoying their products and games. And that answer is not the casuals or the people who treat gaming as just a fad.

I think we should be asking ourselves, not whether kinect will sell (obviously it will...think tickle-me-elmo phenom of parents being told by media and ads that everyone wants one, so your kids do too aka hype-train), but whether it will be able to sustain itself with the sales of kinect games/software. Unlike the Wii, which is a console in itself and able to be played in a "traditional" (buttons and joystick) manner, the kinect is a peripheral that is somewhat specialized in a sense that it cannot be applied to any other console. Software publishers are going to want to get in on high kinect hardware sales, but if they see that software sales are lackluster, I highly doubt they are going to take the risks financially to produce truly unique games to compliment the hardware. Now you may ask "what about the Wii's popularity and high shovel-ware status?" and my answer and opinion would be that Nintendo's very strong 1st party studios have kept them afloat by not only producing a fairly steady stream of crowd-pleasers that seemingly inflate sales of software (a good sign for those shareholders)but also produce a good trickle down effect on techniques to maximize the fun of motion controlled games. The kinect on the other hand doesn't, imho, have the great 1st party studio support and will have to rely on the originality and creativity of mostly 3rd party developers, which doesn't bode well for the kinect.

So yes, it will sell, but will it last? Only time will tell. I'm holding out for when/if kinect 2 debuts.

i dont think it will happen with kinect one, i think more and more people will come to except kinect as bringing something new to the table, and when kinect two comes out it will be more successful

I agree with "I HATE YOU FANBOYS" casuel gamers are the majority. only reason I bought my ps3 60gb for blu-ray movies an casuel games such as jak an dexter,ratchet an clank,need for speed, GT5.. hopeing R-TYPE 4 space shooter and Gradius 6 would come. Enhinder also and CONTRA 5 any side-scrolling game still hopeing!!! always has been a casuel gamer. dont care if i get disagrees

I'm not convinced that Kinect will be successfull outside of the current Xbox 360 userbase.

I personally saw no PS3 console sales flux during the release of Move. Leading me to believe that the only individuals that purchased the devices were already PS3 owners.

I feel that the same pattern will happen with the Xbox 360 and Kinect. There will be strong sales of Kinect but little too no out of the ordinary flux in overall Xbox 360 sales. Can it really be a pay off for Microsoft if it doesn't entice new people to purchase their console?

I also have to think about the current Xbox 360 userbase. Are they willing to pay $150 for a piece of tech that has a limited library of games for the more serious gamer. When the Move lauched it launched with it's own library as well as an integration with past PS3 titles. Kinect will have to sell with its launch line-up alone, that to me is a huge disadvantage. The current line up will be fine for some, but usefull, clever integration with games like Gear of War, Call of Duty, Mass Effect, or Halo 3/Reach would give more incentive for the more mature gamer if not gaurentee a purchase from them.

The casual market was tapped with the Wii as the spear-head and it seems Kinect wants to sway some of those users to go with Kinect but I feel that those Wii owners may feel that one console is enough for them. For those that don't own a console at all, I'm not sure full-body control is the periferal they are holding out for.

I know this is a touchy subject and people can speculate and analyze all they like but nothing can realy dispute the cold numbers that are released. We'll have to wait and see on those to put things like this to rest.

Not "in the end". It will sell at the beginning. Then after a couple months, all the lies from Micro$oft's official PR Department, even with those from Micro$oft's unofficial PR Dept (Kotaku) won't be enough to cover up the fact that second-hand retailers are literally inundated with the thing and "teh salez!" have come to a halt. And in the end it will be recognized as the major failure it actually is.

Depends how you measure success. If you measure success by sales figures then my best guess would be yes, it will be successful.

If you measure success by quality of hardware, software, etc... We all will have an opinion on that once the Kinect has been out for a while.

Just the amount of damage control by the numerous Kinect sites indicates that something is wrong with Kinect. Many of the articles sounds as if they are apologizing for the Kinect flaws.

The question is not if the marketing will have the effect of a few million devices out into the hands of consumers the first month. It is rather if the consumer will be happy with the purchase. Many people will buy on the hype alone - so we should see a large launch number.

With Move Sony seems confident that the product will sell itself based on the demo's and the word of mouth from consumer experience.

Kinect does not seem to have much good feedback from the gaming community - hence we see the artificial feedback - from paid celebs to create the impression that consumers should be happy - because - Hey - Justin Bieber and Oprah and David Beckham likes it. Just look at the great big happy smiles on their faces. So the people easily ah.. moved by such will buy it for gifts etc.

Now I wonder how many PS3 owners will be perplexed during the holiday season wondering just why Aunt Barbara bought him a Kinect when he does not own a XB360...
