PS3 Processor Powers New Glasses-Free 3D Televisions

TheEscapist: Toshiba's new glasses-free 3D televisions have the same electronic brain as the PlayStation 3.

Toshiba unveiled its anticipated line of glasses-free 3D televisions today, and also revealed the basic method through which they work. Using the Cell processor, the same CPU found in the PlayStation 3, the new television sets are able to get rid of the 3D revolution's glasses barrier and provide a 3D experience more similar to how the average consumer currently watches television

Sweet! i was wondering whether this tech would be compatible with the PS3's 3D! How its actually worthwhile!

RedDragan5707d ago

The 40 degree viewing angle is the crucial thing. This has apparently held back a few companies who as yet haven't managed to get there, but that 40 degree needs to expand vastly for this to truly convince people to buy in the mass market. No doubt the tech will get there.

Not sure if the Cell is primarily responsible for this, but instead how Toshiba have been Cell friendly. They put a Cell in a laptop to handle jobs an Intel Quad Core is simply not up for the task of doing good enough. It never went on sale.

This is good news though, having to wear glasses is not good, and better still... the likes of Rayban who overcharge for what I consider crap, are already being forced out of a market they have no place in. So this glasses-less TV is an awesome piece of news!

UnSelf5707d ago

but rayban sells glasses.....why isnt this their market?

RedDragan5707d ago (Edited 5707d ago )

Because this is the entertainment market, not the sunglasses market. I would trust panasonic 3D glasses over rayban 3D glasses. They may not look as good, but chances are they would perform better.

It would be a case of those companies just trying to cash in, if they charge over £100 for normal, hardly decent, glasses... how much would they charge for 3D glasses?

You are not paying for quality with Rayban, you are paying for a brand name.

InTheKnow5707d ago (Edited 5707d ago )

...the cheapest way to go for Toshiba. They created the cell, along with IBM and Sony so the royalties should be just about right. You didn't think they used the 2003 tech because it's the best did you...lol

BTW...IBM sold M$ the Xenon CPU that is based off of the Cell...so in a sense, Sony paid for the development of the 360...O_o

RedDragan5707d ago

For media based calculations... the Cell's 2003 tech is the best.

It beats Intels 1980's with tacked on cores tech at this sort of thing. Royalites as you said undoubtably plays a part in them using that chip... but it is the best chip for the job.

Not many people would see the sense in using an 6 core Intel in a TV, but that 6 Core would not be as good as the cell for this task. It's archecture is a monster for rendering these images in real time. Intels are some way off having the required power for the media applications in coding, they are as we all know, more suited to general purpose processing instead.

darthv725707d ago

ever since tosh came out and said they were doing glasses free i had the feeling they were using the cell. Co creator of the chip and had been stated it was going to be used in other devices than just the ps3. TV was the likely first place to show what else it can do.

Sony will be doing the same thing. For now, till they get it all figured out, they will be doing glasses for a short time. Good time to wait for 3d tv's.

boodybandit5707d ago (Edited 5707d ago )

And I bet that is exagerrated and pushing the limits of reality. It's like the whole dynamic vs real world contrast ratios today.

The reality is this technology wont be ready for mass production until well into the next console life cycle, if by then. Does anyone know how poor the FOV was for LCD's when they first hit the market? Till this day, while they are fantastic now, they still have limitations and some more so than others.

It's going to take years for 3D displays at wide viewing angles without glasses. If you want 3D you are going to have to get use to those glasses for now. "Glassless" 3D is a long way away.

thorstein5707d ago

LOOK at the PRICE. Yes it is 1,400 now. But plasmas were pushing 10,000 at launch. This is so sweet because we know that the tech will be perfected. Just as LCD/ LED was.

badz1495707d ago

sony paid the development of 360? dude, please don't just come in here spewing random things. Sony didn't pay a dime for the Xenon. IBM makes custom processors. that's what they do and usually these processors made by IBM aren't sold to mass market and made for specific task unlike general multi-purposes processors like what being made by Intel or AMD. M$ approached IBM for the Xenon and IBM made the Xenon while M$ payed them for that. the CELL BE however was co-developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba almost for the same time or even before that. the CELL manufacturing line was later sold to Toshiba and IBM moved on and ended their involvement in CELL last year. so how is Sony paying for Xenon when M$ payed IBM for it? that just doesn't make any sense.

GrandTheftZamboni5707d ago

If I remember correctly MS paid a billion for their chip. Cell cost was about 500 million.

DORMIN5706d ago

'2 Cells 1 entertainment' will give '2 girls 1 cup' a run for their money.

InactiveUser5706d ago

3D TVs using the CELL can mean only 1 thing...

ITZ DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMEEDDD!!!! /s

IRetrouk5706d ago

actually there was an article on how the 360 chip was based off early prototypes of the cell design, it had something to do with sony not copyrighting them or something along those lines,

I like 3D using glasses because things pop off/out of the screen. Where as glassless 3D is more like looking into a 3D box, but i like the fact you dont need glasses.

Hummmm.....

gamingdroid5707d ago

I found 3D glasses to look like it add depths instead of popping out myself.

vsr5707d ago

I'm expecting this type of tv s from Sony.

Anon19745707d ago

From what I understand, this technology isn't compatable with anyone's 3D content - and that any 3D for these screens has to be shot specifically for these screens. That's what they were saying at the CES show this year. If you can hook it up to a PC, there's a couple of video cards that will work with it, but that's really all it's good for at the moment. Just a PC monitor.

Also, they still can't just show regular 2D because of the way the TV's are made. That's a huge problem. They can do their conversion, but there's no way to turn it off and have the TV's just display regularly like the current, glasses based 3D. I don't know about you guys, but I'm not paying $3000 for a 20" 3D computer monitor that won't work with existing 3D tech, won't properly display 2D images, has dramatically less depth than glasses based 3D and only works if my head's positioned just so.

For $3000 I'd rather get a 55 inch 3D TV that I know is actually going to work like a TV should, and work with the existing 3D movies and games.

Trroy5707d ago (Edited 5707d ago )

Um. No. It works with existing 3D tech.

shoddy5707d ago

Can't switch to 2d is no buy.

40degree angle is like only 1 maybe 2 people get to see the whole picture
no buy.

Now I see why majority of tv company chose glasses.
You dare to doubt this billionaires?

djfullshred5706d ago

IMO 20" is even too small for surfing the web on my PC. I don't live in a minature house, so I have no interest in buying minature TVs, regardless of price.

TheLastGuardian5706d ago (Edited 5706d ago )

Glasses isn't what's stopping me from buying a 3DTV It's the price. I'd love to play my games in 3D. Killzone 3 looks amazing in 3D. I hope they drop the price soon.

dkgshiz5707d ago

Depending if this is just as good as regular 3D tvs. I might get one of these. Well I will wait for another brand to pick up this tech at least. I would never buy anything with Toshiba branded on to it.

RedDragan5707d ago

They don't intend to sell this tech outside of Japan in the near future. Typical.

Japan uses SECAM, not sure if they even do NTSC and PAL on their sets. I know my TV does PAL and NTSC, but not SECAM. So these TVs might be useless in our homes!

:(

PirateThom5707d ago

Japan uses NTSCJ (which is NTSC with PAL's black level), SECAM is France and others.

RedDragan5707d ago

Oops.... Enjoy, America. Darn!

:D

bananasNmonkeys5707d ago

Let the misinformed arguments begin...

comp_ali5707d ago

it uses the same processor as PS3 which is not a sony processor but IBM instead and called The Cell.
As usual idiots will rush to comment without giving a damn. when you arge with them , they try to drag you to other side argument.

raztad5707d ago (Edited 5707d ago )

The Cell was developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba.

EDIT: Sorry about it MisterAV

BTW, I got a disagree so we must be wrong :D

MisterAV5707d ago (Edited 5707d ago )

cell was jointly developed by Sony, IBM, Toshiba. And it's not "The Cell" is Cell BE.

edit: ops someone already said

jerethdagryphon5706d ago

sony devised the cell aproched ibm and toshiba to
actually build the thing and spread costs
sony owns the rights in conjunction with ibm and toshiba

TekoIie5707d ago

I still am not sold onto 3D yet. Killzone 3 will decide the out come since its made to be played in 3D if im correct

Paradise Lost5707d ago

So i still need to buy a new hdtv to watch things in 3d...I'll stick to my current tv.

UnSelf5707d ago

how else would u watch the 3d?

a tv software download?

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle21d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde28d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga29d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199229d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga29d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman29d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

blacktiger29d ago

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box29d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion29d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7229d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7529d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit29d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14929d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7729d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
