Glassesless 3DTVs. Ah...wow. I never want to buy a 3DTV along with the glasses and crap, it's expensive and I already own 3 HDTVS, BUT, down the road if these glassesless TVs work and they catch on, they'll become affordable and I may pick one up. Hell, they sell 40 inch 1080p HDTVs at Wal-Mart for 500 bucks, sometimes a little less. Can't say if their quality is good or not, but affordable nonetheless. It would be a pain if I have people over with a glasses 3DTV and there aren't enough glasses or something like that, plus wearing the glasses just seems a bit of a pain. I guess the 3DS will be a decent testing ground for how glassesless 3D works on the small scale.

I have a Samsung 3D TV but when I put the glasses on it gives me a massive headache, Im looking forward to the 3DTVs that dont use glasses one thing I dont understand is how do things pop out of the screen if you dont have the glasses on?

this is ace news, the one thing that put me of 3D and gaming/movies is the glasses, the headache that come with wearing it every so often and the cost of multiple glass really put me off at first, but this 3D without glasses could be just the kick start that technology may need to kickstart, and the fact that ps3 will be compatible with this make me a proud of owner of the FAT PS3 !!!!!

This has been the plan since the Cell was incorporated. There have been plans to put the Cell in HDTVs for a very long time now.

when a tv has the same processor as the consoles is time to upgrade consoles.....new generation can be as far as 2012!

Does the brightness/contrast get toned down significantly while using "shutter" glasses, like what happens when using "red-blue" glasses?

We had a display presentation at work the other day (well, a couple of weeks ago).

And what I understand is, that they have is what they call a "prism display". This works like those holographic static ways of switching pseudo 3D on e.g. those greeting cards and such. Same principal. What you end up with are discrete viewing angles with well, distinct image sources. The displays they had, used 8 angles, AFAIR. But, each angle has it's own input source (so to speak). This means the content needs to be prepared for those 8 angles.

Basically you can call that the "3D resolution". The more angles they can build, the lesser you see those steps when moving from left to right and the bigger the over all viewing angle will be. Those distinct angles will grow and give us a full 3D resolution the same way how x/y resolution evolved over time.

Now, I mentioned to the guy, that pre-processing 8 input streams is not feasible for us, because we would render stereoscopic at max. Well, they just build displays, they don't really care about the interface from the panel. So, basically, this is a interface from what a standard 3D signal to those low level data the display actually needs. And what Toshiba seams to do, is use a cell based SW solution to do exactly that. Post process a stereoscopic (?) signal and split it into # of viewing angles the display actually needs.

I was actually a non believer, but I think they can make that work. I saw these new displays and they are miles better than the first generation of displays - those I just saw 2 years ago. If they can increase the viewing angles and multiply them by say 10 fold, we are getting somewhere here.

Though I wont be buying a t.v type like this until the price is reasonable, still it is good news to hear. In time when the bugs like the side-view blurriness are ironed out then bring on the psp2 with this type of screen technology!

OK Article but no mention on if the Cell in the TV will interact with the Cell in a PS3 plugged into the Toshiba 3D TV.

The Cell has an architecture that allows multiple Cells to work together.

20 inches no matter how good the 3D looks is not worth $2880. Just because they don't make you wear glasses they think they can bring the size down 30 inches and up the price by $1000? That is a rip off. Even if this TV came to the US and if I had $2880 to blow I would definitely buy a 55 inch Samsung LED 3DTV. For now I'm sticking with my Sony Bravia LCD.

Cell has already been used in TV's already so it is not a big deal that it is in yet another TV. If it is not bigger than 40inch I wont even look at it. I am old and I need my big TV sets lol.

Now that is a 3D TV I can stand behind! screw glasses!

But man, you have to laugh a bit about the irony of this... Sony pushing hard with their 3D tv using glasses getting trumped by a competitor using Sonys own chip.

most of the comments I see are that its too expensive and that glasses are better... give this NEW technology a chance to get better... in a few years i bet the picture quality and viewing angles will get better and they will have some of the best picture quality and lower prices.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

So now there's certifiable proof that Ryan was in fact "fired", as opposed to when it was first announced that he "retired", in order to save face.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
