Microsoft's Research Depth Enabled Kinect

People in the Xbox business unit researched the concept and determined it couldn't be done, Craig Mundie, Microsoft's chief research and strategy officer said. "They concluded it was impossible. It wasn't going to work,".

But then they decided to approach workers in Microsoft's research arm. Researchers there in a wide array of fields including depth sensing, machine learning, speech recognition, gestural interface, computer vision, identity recognition, sound processing and parallel computing got together to build what is now known as Kinect.

They didn't conclude it was impossible lol, they concluded that it wouldn't give the kind of experience a real gamer could enjoy. At most Kinect is just a machine made for shovelware and at the least for things like headtracking and navigating menus.

a_squirrel5754d ago

I really can't see me playing halo with this. Just sayin'

XactGamer5754d ago

I can't see you playing Halo period.

talltony5754d ago

Sony passed on this tech. It just isn't practical but Microsoft didn't care they thought they could sell the idea that "you are the controller anyways"'kinect just isn't practical.

Chaostar5754d ago

"Few companies have the research depth to build something like Kinect..."

But two passed on the technology first?

"Microsoft came up with the concept behind Kinect..."

Who are they trying to fool or do they actually believe MS invented this tech?

Just seems like there's a lot of misinformation creeping around the interwebs involving Kinect. Why can't they just focus on what it can actually do, which, at the minute, isn't much. The tech is just not ready for advanced interation with computers... maybe with a decent internal chip and a few other hardware revisions future versions of these cameras may have a lasting inpact on the industry but not right now.

dizzleK5754d ago

speaking of misinformation-

"Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata was offered the chance to sign up the device that became Project Natal - but turned it down as he didn't believe he could launch it at a mass-market price."

http://www.computerandvideo...

it was passed up on by nintendo because they couldn't sell it cheaply enough, not because it was sh*t.

Silver3605754d ago

MS purchased 3DV but they are using Primesense' tech so it isn't the same tech that Nintendo was shown. According to the article PrimeSense is even providing the chips for Kinect.

blackpanther255754d ago (Edited 5754d ago )

"Iwata-san only ever invests in something he can guarantee will work for a Nintendo audience," the exec told us.

"He also had some worries around latency during gameplay."

from the same article.....not saying natal is crap but for for argument purposes read your source

DJMarty5754d ago

Sony also passed on Kinect tech, because it was very limited. And guess what it turns out Kinect has huge limitations, namely it don't work with most genre's.

Buttons & triggers are needed, gestures don't cut it.

nveenio5753d ago

Sony passed because they knew the tech wouldn't support the hardcore market. Microsoft doesn't support the hardcore market, and that's why they picked it up. If they DID care about the hardcore market, they wouldn't build machines that break if you play them too much.

"Microsoft came up with the concept behind Kinect..."

Who are they trying to fool or do they actually believe MS invented this tech? "

seems you are the one being fooled yourself. How does coming up with a concept translate to inventing the tech? Coming up with the Kinect concept, of course Microsoft came up with the concept behind it. It's FOR the Xbox 360 and what it does and will do is MICROSOFT's concept of what they need/want it to do on the Xbox 360. From the Kinect dashboard, using it to video chat with LIVE and MSN members, ESPN use, etc. that is all Microsoft's CONCEPT for Kinect.

No one said they invented the technology....

Chaostar5754d ago (Edited 5754d ago )

@Blaze The concept of controller free gaming using a camera device was NOT concieved by Microsoft. The Eyetoy is proof of this but I'm unsure if Sony even came up with this concept themselve either.

As for voice recognition, thats been done before too obviously. My point stands, Microsoft didn't create a new concept, they applied an old one to their own product.

How am I wrong?

Edit: Oh I see, I put tech when I meant concept, my bad... but they didnt come up with the concept either.

@dizzleK Did I say they passed because it was sh*t? no, so don't project your anger.

Triella5754d ago (Edited 5754d ago )

Loads of bullshit MS didn't reserach anything and didn't come with any concept ... they just bought the cam makers and licenced the techno from other companies.

Do you know how many companies work with Z-cam motion sensing control ? Here are just a few :

Gesturetek (software licenced to MS)
Mesa
PMD Technologies
Canesta
Willow Garage
3DV (bought, killed and buried by MS)
Prime Sens (which received a $20 milion funding by MS)
Tzyx
Hokuyo
Sick

etc.

DelbertGrady5754d ago

Here they come again. Brace yourselves.

MariaHelFutura5754d ago

What are you talking about?

Kinect sets itself up to fail, that people like to talk about it shouldn`t be surprising. It looks like a massive waste of time when MS/360 only owners were hyping it up like it`s god`s gift to gaming. Most 360 owners on this site don`t even find it attractive....at all.

R2D25754d ago

you only posted your hate for MS like a million times in every Kinect article.

MS is teh evil and they want to control us by using Jedi mind tricks.

TheColbertinator5754d ago

Just because you hate Kinect doesn't mean you hate MS.I know many people who are still picking up Gears 3 and Halo Reach but not Kinect.Maybe some gamers dont want to play Kinect dancing games

IdleLeeSiuLung5754d ago (Edited 5754d ago )

It's as if Kinect raped your sister, killed your parents and is now the hero!

It's an accessory, if you don't like it go play with your Xbox 360/PS3. Do we really need the same trolls uttering the same comment every time a Kinect article comes up?

Megaton5754d ago (Edited 5754d ago )

Bubbles for Colbert. Everyone I know with a 360 thinks it's a joke, but that doesn't mean they like their 360 any less. They'll all still be buying their Halos, Gears and Fables. I just don't see how anyone not employed by Microsoft can honestly defend it based on what has been shown. Unless that kinda family-friendly shovelware is just your style, in which case I gotta wonder how you stumbled upon a site like this.

MicroSony4Life5754d ago

be new here. Have you seen Maria's comment history, clearly a PS3 troll who hates the Xbox.

For some reason I think GWAVE and MARIA are the persons.

TheColbertinator5754d ago

@MicroSony

No I have been in this site since early 2008 and I have seen all kinds of trolls come and go.I know who are the true trolls of this site and Maria cannot compare with the worst trolls on N4G.

Its just another day, another trolled Kinect article on N4G.

MariaHelFutura5753d ago

Thanks Steven. BTW, anyone who want to add me on XBL send me a PM. I only have XBLS though.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio2d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing2d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster922d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit2d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing2d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster922d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn25d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn24d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown5d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay4d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay4d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac4d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger5d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster30005d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde5d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde4d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_4d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
