What Were They Thinking: Resident Evil: Code Veronica

Video games are a medium filled with lousy stories, absurd scenarios and otherwise ridiculous plot points. That said, there are also some real gems out there. The sort that rise above the stupidity of their bretheren and prove that yes, gaming can be a real, honest-to-goodness medium for storytelling. Sadly, few can do this perfectly. Even in the best games there are those moments where you just have to sit back and wonder what they were thinking.

This week: Resident Evil: Code Veronica

Resident Evil: Code Veronica X
is one of the best RE ive ever played

Galaxia5810d ago

I hate Code Veronica for the same reasons mentioned in this article. It ruined the entire RE series. I mean, seriously, the game removed features that previous titles had, it was literally a downgrade from RE3.

Add it's shitty faux psychological story, and all those annoying characters that just don't fit in with the RE series. And you have one really terrible game. It's not the worst game I've played, but it's near the bottom of the barrel.

stewie328875810d ago (Edited 5810d ago )

See, I didn't hate Code Veronica. It was still an entertaining game , but it just wasn't as good as earlier entries.

I feel the same way about the more recent games. I enjoyed Resident Evil 4, but not in the same way and not to the same extent. I can pick and play through Resident Evil 2 any time and still love it. After reaching that castle with the midget on my third playthrough, I was ready to be done with RE4.

Galaxia5810d ago

I didn't hate it when I played it, I thought it was ok, just meh. Wasn't great, but wasn't bad either.

But what came after it is why I started to hate it. It derailed the series. The damage it had done wasn't evident immediately.

I mean it revived Wesker, only to not use him until almost 10 years later, then he was killed off in a stupid way anyways. And the whole fighting with Wesker story was really stupid anyways and gave way to all these side stories an retcons about Wesker with super powers and all that. I don't know why people think Wesker is cool for having super powers, yet Alice from the movies sucks for having super powers.

But really though, RE is about playing as an average human, trying to survive in an area infected by a biohazard outbreak. Not, having this comic book villain enemy and having gunfights with RPG's and punchups with a super villain. So I blame CVX's stupid unresolved story for the narrative catastrophe that was RE5.

Umbrella Corp5811d ago

How dare this article call me stupid.

stewie328875811d ago

Well come on! What were you thinking!

"Oh, those first times were flukes, what are the odds of it happening again?"

How about some safety standards with your zomibifying bioweapon!

DigitalAnalog5811d ago

Those weren't flukes. It's all ORCHESTRATED.

Ashford family made the T-Veronica Virus, its contained in the research facility on an island. Ohh wait whats this the Island was attacked? By Wesker?!?!? Thus this unleashed the Virus out of captivity?

Though I will admit you do have me on the Antarctic section of the game because there was no clear explanation of that. All we know is that the father to Alexia Ashford was used as a guinea pig for the T-Veronica Virus where he was contained as a test subject.

DigitalAnalog5811d ago

Did he just wanted to write an opinion piece just for the sake of it? CV was one of the best games in the franchise, and it also explains the origins of the T-virus.

"Most would blame Resident Evil 4 for this."

Nope. RE4 was just as intense as the first 3. To be honest, I blame stupid Capcom US for changing the name to "Resident Evil". Biohazard has ALWAYS been a fitting name and immediately anybody below 10 IQ could easily determine that it would be based on a sci-fi thriller or horror game.

"Resident Evil" on the other hand just screams out "witchcraft", "demonic worshippingers", "curse of the undead", etc etc. which then results to articles like these.

stewie328875811d ago

Hey, I (said wacky author) agree that Code Veronica's a good game, but it has a lot of stupid stuff in it. The GC remake of Resident Evil, Resident 2 and Nemesis easily outclass it in my book.

And yeah, Resident Evil 4 was intense and even scary at parts, but for most of the game I think it was more of straightforward shooter than a horror game. And a shooter with too much dumb stuff for my taste. I don't care what fancy training Leon has had, he should not be a superhero. Uggh...the laser dodging scene....

jeeves865810d ago

I agree, I like the name Biohazard better than Resident Evil, but Biohazard was apparently already copyrighted in the US. Which is sad.

What were you thinking writing this article.... O_o

Code Veronica was the best

Spenok5810d ago

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle57d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Blues Journey is the game I'd like to see.

Popsicle59d ago

Pre-ordered mine a few days ago. Love this concept and hope there are more games announced. I can’t justify paying the prices for games that collectors are asking for. It’s the primary reason I own almost every console except the Neo Geo.

Agent7559d ago

I've pre ordered one here in the UK, no games though, as I'll move it on for a higher price. The white model looks awesome, but as expected, the price is too high. We'll probably see more of those all in one cartridges from China containing every AES game. In the UK, AES+ game at £70 ($95) is better than eye watering prices for the originals, but these games are so old and I can honestly say SNK didn't release many classics. The Metal Slug series is the only series I rate, there were just too many Street Fighter clones and not enough scrolling fighting games. Overall, the Neo Geo was poor for all genres apart from one on one fighters. Videos on YouTube asking for games from that console generation to be ported to the AES+, but who'd want to pay £70 for Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2? There's a lot of SNK collections out there, the best being Metal Slug Anthology on the PlayStation 2. The Street Fighter Anniversary Collection on the Switch contains 12 games for around £30, instead of £840 if released on the AES+. For collectors, the AES+ is the best news since sliced bread. Are there enough SNK fans out there? Nowhere near. Those £70 cartridges will soon start creeping up in price and it'll be a re-run of the original console.

I always wanted one in the 90's but couldn't afford it. Now i can but i think if i get one it will be collecting dust fast. It's a nostalgia thing i guess.

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter Let Jango Fett Loose

LucasArts gave Jango Fett his own game in 2002, and it pulled Star Wars into a much dirtier, rougher, and more interesting corner of the galaxy.
