In Mass Effect, you can play as either male or female Shepard in Mass Effect. you can actually customize Shepard's face as well. (So far, all of the demos have shown only the standard male Shepard.) In addition, you can follow either the good, neutral or evil path. As always, you can choose from different classes: soldier, engineer, biotic specialist, etc.

In the game, some paths and storylines are mutually exclusive. Obviously you cannot be a male and female Shepard at the same time. If you have certain NPCs in your party, certain storylines will actually be closed off to you. If you make certain decisions, some planets will become available while other planets will become closed off to you - because the game paths can be mutually exclusive. That's just to give you an idea of how much non-linearity and replay value this game has. After all, this is a Western RPG, the genre that is known for its open-ended and non-linear strucuture.

On the other hand, I think Japanese games do not generally emphasize replay value. Generally, Japanese games - even RPGs - are very linear and have single-path story progression. The East and the West just follow very different game design philosophies.

That is the worst excuse for replay value I have ever heard.

Replay the game to see what you missed?
Replay the game for nonstop action?
Replay the game never to be seen?

I'm a big fan of Western RPGs. PS3 just does not cut it for me when it does not have any exclusive Western RPGs. It's the one genre that makes or breaks a console for me personally, and you know there are many devoted Western RPG players out there who are like me.

Can you name one Western RPG that is *exclusively* on PS3? At all?

PS3 does not even have any exclusive WRPG in the pipeline. It's not coming. No WRPG has been planned for PS3. There's nothing. Nada. Not a zit.

And Bioware is not working on a single-player WRPG for PS3. Can you even give me the title of this supposedly exclusive RPG? No? That's it's just another rumor, like MGS4 is coming to 360. You guys have been saying that forever, and that hasn't happened. You said Bioware was going to announced a PS3 exclusive for PS3 at E3. E3 has come and gone. Where's the Bioware exclusive??

I am not a fan of the series myself. So far you're the only person in here who keeps singing praises of MGS4 in a Mass Effect thread. MGS4, Killzone 2, or an action game is just not going to convince me to buy a PS3. It has to be something else.

But if PS3 can get a couple of really nice, exclusive single-player Western RPG titles, then I'll switch over. Maybe you can contact Sony and tell them that they need to look into getting some exclusive Western RPGs, because that's one genre that's completely missing from PS3 game lineups.

ME sure looks like its going to be a great game, I happen to think Mass Effect will be the GOTY, if not then it will come very, very close to winning IMO, this thread after all IS about Mass Effect so theres no need to make what looks like a silly comparison between ME and MGS4, both games will be great and a term like "re-play value" is very subjective since basicly it depends on how much you like the gameplay, there are games with plenty of content but sometimes its just plenty of boring stuff, -now from everything that I've seen I have no doubt ME will be one hell of a game, my point is from what I've seen of MGS4 it will have its own variety of "re-play" value too.....how much will depend on each individuals preference so your comment is unfounded and brings negatism to a great thread about Mass Effect. Why not just talk about how great you think ME is going to be and explain why without taking a jab at MGS4?

because of FabNMun's comment (2) he got hotshot1237, calphoenix, CrazzyMan, and ktchong going at each other about another game. Which this should have been a thread to just admire Mass Effect. Come on ya'll, stick to the subject without bashing something else. And yes, this goes to those PS3-only enthusiasts as well. How many times have they brought up halo 3 out of nowhere? I bet you can't count it with just 2 hands.

P.S. I heard Mass Effect was coming out in a Collectors Edition. If so, there goes another $70+ included in my "save up for PS360 game funds". Total up to now before Mass Effect...$584.48. *sigh*

you made up some really excuses for replaying MGS (i.e., "u can play the whole game with nonstop action. u can play the whole game in first person. u can play the game trying never to be seen. u can play the game 2 see all the items u missed.") You can apply the same excuses for ANY and EVERY game. Using your lame excuses, that means any and every game can have immerse replay value.

Because you use such silly excuses to elevate MGS, that pretty much tells us that you're a big fanboy.

and guess what? I love Western RPGs, but I can't stand JRPGs. I'm sure there's a lot of people who'd agree with me. Otherwise Oblivion and KOTORs wouldn't have been bestsellers and have huge followings.
