i love sony products a lot because they are always ahead of there time. 2004 psp being compared to a 2011 system and the psp still hold its own. 2011 games multiplatform console games still are below the quality of a 2007 game call uncharted. i wonder what will happen when the 3ds which is the successor of the dsi is compared to the successor of the psp which is psp 2. i'll wait for the psp 2 because sony caters to their core gamers. i'm sure that the psp 2 will be compared to xbox 360 games and ps3 games.

Guys remember the chip they are using has different versions. I think they are using the 2008 model and judging from the Resident Evil in game cinematics I say its the 2008 model or maybe even a new one.

Since when is Nintendo about delivering hot new tech into the hands of their consumers, thus lowering battery life, reducing reliability, and increasing price? Do you seriously think Nintendo wants the 3DS to launch at $250, and lose its battery-life advantage over the PSP to boot?

Since when have Nintendo handheld consumers demanded super performance? Note the DS, greatest selling handheld line of all-time. Look at the specs.

Consider the economy of making a 3DS, over a DSi (which costs $170) -- a new high-tech screen, not in commonplace use or production, a new GPU, full BC with the DSi (meaning both ARM processors and 16MB of memory at the very least, as well as upscaling ability on the new GPU, most likely, to scale older DS images onto the new higher-res screen), a new stereoscopic camera setup, new wifi features, probably a SD card slot for downloaded content (Sandisk gets royalties for these)... It probably has 32MB of memory (like the PSP-1000 did) and at least 2MB of dedicated framebuffer memory too. You think all that is gonna roll in under $200, especially if you throw in a overclocked GPU (probably the most expensive part), which has a low factory yield?

The Pica 200 in the 3DS will run at 200 MHz, as designed, not the theoretical 400 its supposedly capable of. Max frequency chips cost more, because the many chips not up to snuff would not be suitable to build a 3DS with, if the requirements were so high. Nintendo is not going to pay a premium for only Pica 200s which run at max clock, and shell out all sorts of repair money to boot, when the chips fail.

That, more realistic estimate IMO, puts it at less than half the polygons of the PSP, and about 1.2x the fillrate, which it'll need, since it has like 1.8x the screen real estate to fill when rendering 3D. It still destroys ever other DS model in existance, which is ALL that matters.

I understand the wishful thinking with the hope for a 400 MHz GPU, but... its not very realistic, in my opinion. Hoping for that is kinda setting the Nintendo community up for disappointment, I think.

But then again, when I read this...

It seems its not the right GPU specs we've been reading OR the 3DS has more hardware to get this kind of quality out of the system. It might be something like the PS3 has a pretty weak GPU compared to the 360, but the Cell can take over tasks for the GPU. Who knows...

I'm pretty sure there is no 3D Sony handheld yet. So your statement in this case isn't true. Sony brings 3D for home consoles, Nintendo brings that innovation to handhelds, which is ahead of Sony.

Another thing Nintendo was way ahead with, is with releasing their Wiimote in 2006. Sony now follows suite by releasing a pretty much exact clone and do a 'Wii-too'. Even though this motion controlling might not be your cup of tea, Nintendo has opened that market on the Wii.

So partly they innovate, although agreed, on home console hardware they're never the ones that have the most powerful high tech chips
