MS defends E3 conference to hardcore

Microsoft has come under fire this week from some hardcore gamers for an E3 conference that focused largely on its casual-friendly Kinect device. But the platform holder maintains that its showing was "great" for its core consumers.

lol they really cant defend it if the die hard 360 fanboys couldn't agree.

GWAVE5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

We saw the conference for ourselves, Microsoft. You failed your hardcore gamers because you don't have games. No amount of excuses will change that fact.

-MD-5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

I saw a bunch of games. Not too many new announcements but a bunch of games regardless.

I love my 360 more then my Ps3, and after watching all 3 press conferences i came away thinking I would have more fun playing the other 2 consoles this year... I really wanted to believe in Kinect but from what you showed I cant.

StanLee5824d ago

What I don't understand is this; they had an entire show the previous day to tout Kinect so why make the peripheral more than a third of your presentation the next day? That doesn't make any sense to me.

Shadow Flare5824d ago

Microsoft, you showed a bunch of multiplatform titles, announced ONE new exclusive (we'll see about that) game, and wasted the rest of the conference showing off natal, which you had a whole conference for the day before. Whats more, you didn't even show it off, you faked the whole thing. Your conference was crap

evrfighter5824d ago

If your a m$ core gamer. Don't get yourself caught up in this fanboy circus wii motion controls has created.

Reply to M$ statement by speaking with your wallet. Giant companies like M$ don't hear you individually. They hear you as a massive group when you aren't dropping the cash.

If you guy's and even the Sony fanboys allows motion controls to become a success. It's going to set back REAL gaming a few years.

5824d ago
morganfell5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

@Shadow,

Their entire future is tied to Kinect. There has been such an investment of capital in order to get to this point, not to mention planned advertising, etc, THIS IS ALL THERE IS.

Microsoft has bet the farm on becoming the new Wii. Other games will not allow them to stay afloat due to the fact they have yet to recoup all the money spent on the Xbox division since it launched. It's either Kinect or bust.

Now you know why Robbie Bach was fired. And anyone that thinks he left of his own free will mere weeks before the Xbox division's biggest unveiling since the 360 itself is lying to themselves.

Fail HardCore Gammers. They Gave you a New System .They Gave you Halo Reach ,CoDBlack Opp,Gears of War 3,Fable3,Crysis2 ,Fear3 what More do you Want.Stop Crying like a baby and Man UP FB

Shadow Flare5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

morganfell, i agree. MS seem to be betting the farm on Kinetc. They practically announced no new games this year which is shocking. It seems like they're focusing 80% on Kinetc.

There was a few things running through my head while watching MS's conference, and apart from the obvious "is going to bed more fun then watching this" i was thinking of how embarressing it was broadcasting this travesty on the biggest HDTV in Times Square in New York lol

I tell you another thing i was thinking. Only a few weeks ago, we was reading how Microsoft's investors wanted Microsoft to move away from the consumer side of business with xbox, zune, bing, and how they thought natal was going in the wrong direction. I would LOVE, absolutely LOVE to be a fly on the wall in the board meeting after this E3 with those investors fully aware of the poor reception microsoft's e3 got

IRetrouk5824d ago

so 3 exclusives and thats got you happy? catch yourself on, ms let us all down, natal dosnt work and they have 3 games that are exclusive, yeah real big win there buddy.

Misterhbk5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

as a sony rep might say at this point,
"Yo Microsoft, Step Yo Game UP!"
"PEW PEW PEW!"

Cherchez La Ghost5824d ago

360 owners are pissed about the conference. This is an issue between360 gamers and MS. You do not like the 360. You do not have a say in this matter because of yor bias comment saying the 360 has "no games".

Consider the situation like this. This is a family matter. You're an outsider who has no say so because you're not part of the family. If I'm wrong, please tell me why.

DARK WITNESS5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

As a 360 fan who owns both systems, I share the same feelings as my fellow gamers.

MS failed, failed on an epic level of ultimate failure raised to the power of 10*

I don't even know what to say... I keep playing it over and over in my head, was their one new game they showed us ?... ok the new Crytek game.. what else... what else was there ?

Gears we knew, halo reach, fable 3, rising... what else was there ?

you failed MS, you failed us hard and as the other guy said, I will be voting with my $$$... you won't see me dancing up and down in front of no stupid camera !

The Wood5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

i think they would of showed less of kinect IF they actually had more games to fill the gaps OR it might just be the case that MS really are leaving the core 360 gamer as the 2nd tier making the casual their primary focus.... Didn't you guys think it was strange when they made the dashboard so...childish/family friendly by default....avatars for everybody...

They took the mick with the super casual push yet when aaron opens his mouth again he'll be defended (maybe not so vehemently this time around it seems). Im still waiting to hear from that dude. Kudos to all the honest pro 360 guys who are just calling it how most people see it. Sorry if i or others sound like im doggin on MS but some of the points that shadow made about MS shifting towards casuals may not be too far from the truth. Fact is all of the multiplatform games will still be available for the core crowd and MS really didnt wanna keep many studios that could produce more of the games we love. Its a shame from how it looks but e3 or any other show can never really tell us for sure how any of the players will act in latter years but they do give an indication

Bigpappy5824d ago

I agree with M$. They had a very good E3. The Sunday event with the circus was waistful. They should have instead given the press the time with Kinect hands on.
On Monday they made up for Sunday by showning the games and what they are able to offer with Kinect so far (including the starwars exclusive with Lucus). I say so far because I know that there is a lot more to be done with Kinect (Not 1 hybrid game was shown). The hardcore got COD, Fable, Gears, Halo and the new game by crytec.

I like all of thos games, plus some multiplat's not shown. I am waiting to pre-order my kinect with the UBI workout, Dance central, Kinectsports, and kinect adventure. I do like some Move games, but I am not willing to buy a PS3 and all those attachments to play a few games. I don't even have time to play all my 360 stuff.

I do like reading your post at times on N4G, even the haters, but I am aware that you know little about what you speak and are for the most part biased against M$ and the 360. I am also aware that most of you love your shooters and hate casual games. I am not here to convince anyone that they should like casual games, I am just letting you know that not everyone hated the conference, and that Kinect has strong support and will be successful for M$.

DARK WITNESS5824d ago

@ Bigpappy

nice post, but I will say this.. the whole point of this statement is MS addressing " Us " the hardcore gamers.

Yes the kiddies and the casuals got what they wanted out of it. MS can say they had a great conference all day and night, they can make songs about it, it will not suddenly change our minds towards them.

This site is full of haters true and we all know who they are, however quite a few of us are real xbox fans who have supported the xbox brand right from the time the only games you could get on it was shooters, racers and the odd platform game.

A lot has changed since then, but MS cannot tell me it was great, not as a hardcore fan.

IdleLeeSiuLung5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

I was disappointed that MS didn't show any new exclusives. Usually MS shows stuff that comes out relatively soon and no more than 18 months out, but I was hoping for something for the hardcore gamer to look forward to. I am so far happy with Halo:Reach, Fable 3 and Gears 3 in the near future.

With that said though, it seemed they didn't show almost any third party stuff either. If you look at Sony a big chunk of their time was devoted to EA and a host of other third party games.

Which leads me to believe that MS wants to focus on Kinect and want the consumers to focus on that launch. It would explain why they didn't wait with the Gears 3 announcement for E3 if they didn't have anything. It would not surprise me if Kinect got the same type of support in advertising that Halo 3 did to ensure it's adoption rate is high.

candystop5824d ago

MS dropped the ball this year plain and simple. Show us some exclusives like we've been asking for and then everybody will be happy.Nothing at the show was terrible (liked most of it)but how dare they turn there back on the hardcore. 4 or 5 games we all know are coming is not exciting for E3. Stop spending money on stuff we don't want and invest in your company by adding 1st party support.

KingME5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

Well said and bubbles up!

I own all three systems, and of the 3 it's clear on N4G which one I favor the most (360). However, I know when I have been defeated, and one thing that I can say is that Sony's conference was much better than Microsoft's, no doubt about it.

However, I still think MS had a good conference, no where near as bad as the PS3 fanboys are trying to make it out to be. The hardcore titles were great both exclusive and multiplats. And I loved the titles for Kinect, I'm the type of gamer that plays gears, halo and other hardcore games with my homies. But, also would enjoy spend many hours playing things like kinectimals, and dance central with my kids and family. Only a closed minded selfish idiot, can't see casual gamers as people too.

I don't care what most of these clowns say, none of them are putting money in my pocket and therefore 0% of them can influence my choices in life. But it is pretty annoying to deal with people that can't be reasoned with because they "REFUSE" to be mature.

Anyway, great points and comment Bigpappy.

morganfell5824d ago

Maybe you should go back and read my comment. The part that says if people think it was for another reason they are lying to themselves.

Why?

Because people are forgetting the other thing that happened when Bach left.

The Xbox division was told to report DIRECTLY to Steve Balmer. CEO's do not do that unless there is a serious problem. They don't do when a division is on track.

Anon19745824d ago

Don't get me wrong. I'll be buying Halo, Gears and Fable 3. Those have been 3 of my favorite games this gen by far and I'm not going to miss out on these. However - I knew about these titles already and learned nothing new. In the case of Fable, I still have no idea how the game is different from the previous 2. What I was hoping to see from Microsoft this year was something new - something to make me excited to be a 360 owner again.

The last two games I bought for my 360 were Fable and Gears. The next game I'll buy will be Alan Wake, but not until it comes down from the ridiculous $70 price they want for it in Canada. I'm going a year between games I feel are "must play" on the 360 and everything else I can purchase on my PS3 because I don't have to pay to play online and I know the hardware isn't going to crap out on my (as I've gone through multiple 360 consoles).

I'm excited about Gears/Halo/Fable. I will buy these titles, but other than Kinect which doesn't interest me in the slightest there's nothing else for me to blow the dust off my 360 between sequels.

Microsoft, you know what we want. You've seen the types of games that sell. Bring us more, and not just once every two years or so.

N4PS3Fanboys5824d ago

Sony also showed off only one new exclusive (Twisted Metal) and showed a lot of multiplatform games (AC: Brotherhood, Medal of Honor, Dead Space 2), and spent the rest of the conference showing off Move and 3D.

They do have games for hardcore. Gears 3, Forza, Halo Reach, Fable 3, crytek game, crackdown 2, etc and they had a new X360 slim. The problem was the conference. It was boring.

I also thought the Sony conference boring... so what the hell.

EA had the best presentation.... presentation of good games non stop.

Ubisoft conference was ok.

EDIT: One other thing. Nor Microsoft nor Sony have many big releases for the rest of 2010. By my count there are Halo Reach, Crackdown 2 and Fable 3 (Microsoft) and GT5, LittleBigPlanet2 (does it come out this year?) and Motorstorm 3 (Sony) to be released until the end of 2010.
Am i missing exclusives to be released until the end of 2010???

The Great Melon5824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

Well, that's all they make. Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft have to show off hardware their additionally.

cody2oo5824d ago

Move exclusive titles, and socom 4

DigitalAnalog5824d ago

Wasn't there A WHOLE press conference dedicated to Kinect? Not to mention the distracting Cirque du Soleil..

And for E3, I was expecting them to bring in their A-game. Instead, they've focused most of their conference, on Kinect.

/facepalm....

-End statement

Johnny Jiron5824d ago

I think they showed enough to get them through one more year or so, but I'm guessing a new console is making its way out next year. Simply not enough to push it for several more years. As much as I have been on the xbox side of things, I'm slowly finding myself more and more with a PS3 controller in my hands.

IaMs125824d ago

I think your right. A new console has to be in the works, and since i just built my PC i wont be buying any console games for a while so i think ill wait for the new console as well and since Natal is just coming out it will 100% be compatible with the new console. If they dont have another one coming out they freaking better have some games planned.

Shang-Long5824d ago

bubbles for cold. a MS fan who admits MS e3 was a bust

AAACE55824d ago (Edited 5824d ago )

I liked the presentation for Kinect even though I won't be buying a lot of the games. It just showed me how it worked and what possibilities lie in the future. I was also impressed with the new console.

I hate to agree with the fanboys though, but aside from that, MS didn't really bring anything for me! I don't like Halo anymore, but my kids do, Gears 3 looked good, but I didn't get as excited as I used to. MGS looks OK, but just like the Ps3 version, I may get it when it's cheaper. Other than that.... I don't remember anything else they showed!

I do wish they had have brought more to the table though. maybe they need some tough love from us fans and then they might focus on bringing something new. They seem to be content with just bringing the popular games that worked. It's almost like they are scared to invest in new Ip's!

I am hoping that they shorted us because they spent a lot of time redesigning the 360, getting Kinect to work properly and making games for Kinect. And hopefully next year or later this year they bring us something new!

I'll also admit, with Sony announcing the PSN+ service, I thought we would finally get an announcement for free online for Silver members... but no! Now I have to renew my Gold membership! It just ended the day before E3!

Upbeat5824d ago

if i wanna go for a run in the park or play bowling ill get of my arse and do it, not sit in my living room and move a controller about in the air

UnwanteDreamz5824d ago

MS should know better than to defend a perceived mistake. I would have expected them to say nothing at all about it. I have to say I am surprised.

The XBOT5824d ago

Nintendo and Sony did much better jobs. And I give Nintendo the win hands down for a amazing creativity. Sony did great too, I wish there were anouncement on the last gaurdian and uncharted 3, but good overall. MS should run their own circus if they think gaming is all about that. Bring back Sega:

Shenmue 3, Skies of Arcadia 2, Shinobi, Panzer Dragoon, Phantasy Star, Jet Grind Radio, Yakuza 5, Vanquish 2, Bayonetta 2, Wonderboy, Alex Kid, Virtual Fighter, Daytona/Sega GT 3D, Sonic RPG 3D, .......

sikbeta5824d ago

You know what's the Problem here, MS had 2 Conferences, 1 Completely for Kinect and the other one for everything else, but the second one had like 40 minutes of kinect, I mean, 1 was enough, the time lost on kinect, that didn't add anything substantial at least, could end up with more games...

pixelsword5824d ago

@ imdaboss:

If it was a good conference, they wouldn't have to defend it.

That sucked like a toothless... well, let's just say it sucked.

poopface15824d ago

but I will not ever buy a kenitic. Ill stick with regular controllers.

lve2playbball5824d ago

I always get excited when I see all the previews for upcoming games (at E3), but I must say this, I am just not all that excited this year. I know plenty of people will disagree with me, and that's fine...

Microsoft---Kinect seems rather weak, I will not buy it. Your demonstrations made me laugh, but also pissed me off b/c they were LAME. You dedicated separate time to COD:Black Ops--a multiplat--I think you did this because you didn't have much to show. Gears 3--Meh, I liked 1 & 2, but it's just not that exciting anymore. Halo Reach did look awesome, I will give you that. But now you cannot rely on Bungie to carry your system.
The new 360 should be priced at $249 (even though that seems like a lot). Microsoft, I do not think you will be able to compete with PS3 because of BluRay. I understand that 1080p streaming is cool, and may be the future, but it will not be in the near future. Like many have said, we don't have the right infrastructure in place.

One more thing......Motion controls will never replace the controller. Why in the hell would anybody WANT it to?? The only cool thing I saw out of Kinect was the motion gesturing for movies, and the chat thing. But that stuff isn't cool enough to justify the purchase.

The longer I see how little you do the more I get pissed off, dont sit on your asses push new products, features that at least come on par with the comp in all areas. Sitting on their asses with XBL, PSN is finally starting to claw its way up to the same level which to be honest should of never happened..some people have been paying since 2005.....

005824d ago

I want Sony to start steamrolling them so MS actually gets of its ass and does something, the 360 should be 199 by now.

mittwaffen5824d ago

But its a bit of a cop-out, a real company consistently should push things without having a fire lit under their feet.

BeaArthur5824d ago

There's really no defense. The whole conference was stuff I already knew about (with the exception of one title) and the rest was crap I don't care about.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio27d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing27d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9227d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit27d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing27d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9227d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn230d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers30d ago (Edited 30d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn229d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown29d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay29d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay29d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac29d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger29d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300029d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde29d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde29d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_28d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
