Edge: Analysis: Sony Press Conference

It’s remarkable how little you have to do to win – or lose – hearts and minds at E3. Yesterday, Microsoft treated people to a gesture-controlled courtship dance for its love rival’s four-year old conquests. For everyone else – dare it be said, the overwhelming majority of its user base – outgoing trilogies and safe sequels were deemed enough. Nothing about Xbox Live Arcade, Game Room or PC. No howitzer burst of multiplatform stunners. No Crackdown, APB or Mass Effect in an evening devoted to platform exclusives.

After such an alienating performance, Sony barely had to show anything – only that it cared. And in a keynote that played it largely by the numbers, it did.

Sometimes Edge needs to relax and stop criticizing every little detail.I stopped reading reviews on Edge since they get too obsessed with every little negative point. This article is a pointless attack on Microsoft and Sony. Please Edge take a chill pill and shut the hell up.

LordMarius5837d ago

They didn't attack Sony. I thought it was a pretty good review

NecrumSlavery5837d ago

They didn't need to justify MS's travesty of a E3 show though. Just admit Sony kicked ass. don't even compare it. Hell Wii kickthr puss out of MS this year.

Raf1k15837d ago (Edited 5837d ago )

I found there were parts where they couldn't help themselves. It seems they're critical of Infamous 2 already.
'if Infamous 2 can hold a candle to Crackdown 2, we’ll eat our hats'

It was mostly positive though.

edit: Seems Time Lord got there before me.

nveenio5837d ago

It was a decent review of the show. They raise interesting points that I've so far chosen to ignore. For instance, losing everything you get from your PSN+ subscription should you cancel? What's up with that. Twisted Metal for the big reveal? Is the user base really that big? Was it even a surprise? Did Jaffe really have anyone fooled?

My only problem with their review is how they downplayed "Sorcery", which in terms of motion control combatery, completely destroyed the competition.

My favorite 2 Edge reviews:
Morrowind 5/10
GTA3 6/10

Nuff said.

Raf1k15837d ago

That reminds me. I still need to play Morrowind.
Thanks lol.

Theonik5837d ago (Edited 5837d ago )

Call me crazy but i agree with their scores. :S
On these 2 games anyway.

PrimordialSoupBase5837d ago

It's called criticism. If you're looking for a site that fellates games, visit IGN.

Christopher5837d ago (Edited 5837d ago )

You obviously don't subscribe to the magazine. I can pick up any from the last year, flip to any article on Nintendo or MS, and see high praise lacking the needed criticism one would expect. Edge has some excellent writers, on average likely the best in the industry, but their bias is not unfounded or invisible to anyone who reads a few of their magazines.

And, yes, I am a subscriber to the magazine and I pay top dollar for the import of it. There is actually good information to be found, you just need to have a filter on when it comes to the infrequent Sony-focused articles (most recent issue covering Move, of course).

coolfool5836d ago

"but their bias is not unfounded "

You mean "but claims of their bias are not unfounded"?

Sorry to be pedantic but the difference between the two statements is quite a lot.

Orange5837d ago

"while Microsoft’s events seemed arrogant and gaudy, so bereft of core games as to snub its own user base, Sony’s struggled to cram everything in."

I feel like I'm in Bizarro World...where up is down and black is white, and Edge says something nice about Sony while criticizing Microsoft.

deafwing5837d ago

I thought I was the only one thinking that ...

Sony does have a lot of content and little time to show it. They should have went for a 3 hour conference or 2 conferences.

I expect we will hear a lot of news over the next few days about some of the games missed. I was expecting Ape Escape 3 but I expect it to be an Sonys booth.

Anyway there is still GamesCom and TGS for other announcements.

Baka-akaB5837d ago (Edited 5837d ago )

they had time , they just wasted some of it talking too much , about numbers , "bla bla bla playstation brand , experience " , and showing clips full of games as usual .

Removing at least 10 mins of tretton and consort's speech , you could have squeezed more demos of "core" ps3 games that are move compatible , like well today's showing on the side of Heavy rain with move .

They could have at least mentioned x-chat , something many people keeps crying over .

It was good , but lacked polish in execution

APOFISBORICUA5837d ago

On the TGS 2010. I believe they left exclusives like The Last Guardian, Ape Escape 3, Level 5 game and other japanese development titles to the TGS. Also some of the Japanese 3rd parties left some thing I believe. Kingdom Hearts and wathever Capcom brings new no matter wich console will be present on TGS.

PEACE AND GAMING!!

I am starting to understand why they had to reveal all those games before E3.. I dont think people could handle all those exclusives revealed on E3 + GT5 date + TM

saint_john_paul_ii5837d ago

they had too much to reveal at so little time. and they of course had more, but couldnt talk about it.

starvinbull5837d ago

Sony have all these HUGE games that are being revealed or not being revealed but what I don't get is who's making them all? I know they have a lot of studios but still.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle40d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde47d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy47d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga48d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit48d ago (Edited 48d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199248d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga48d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac48d ago (Edited 48d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman48d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box48d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion48d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7248d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7548d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit48d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14948d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7748d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
