Microsoft will announce its 3D plan 'soon'

Blitz Game Studios co-founder Andrew Oliver says that Microsoft is readying and announcement relating to 3D display on the Xbox 360

"3D does take a bit of extra work," suggested Oliver, speaking at today's Westminster eForum event in London.

"Microsoft are going to be making an announcement about it at some point soon."

Can the 360 even do 3D?

Not flaming, just asking. The hard-drive isn't standard. It has no high-def disk format. The processor is weak.

I guess it shows that 3D really must be important if Microsoft is willing to "me too!" on it. But how will it play high-def 3D content?

King Hippo5858d ago

But much like everything else about the 360, it too will be last gen (anaglyph red & blue).

koehler835858d ago

All 3D standards require HDMI, which is not standard in 360, so I really don't know.

AuToFiRE5858d ago

to be more specific, HDMI 1.4

the 360 has 1.2 (which cant be updated)
and the ps3 had 1.3 but with a firmware update brought it to 1.4

logikil5858d ago

It requires HDMI to actually do 3D, which simply means that systems that didn't have HDMI wont be able to do it. However the 360 has had HDMI for a while now. As for patching the PS3 to be HDMI 1.4, that's not possible. You can't patch an actual hardware change, and thats what HDMI 1.4 is, actual new hardware. It is however a misnomer that you need 1.4 to do 3D. 3D is possible with 1.3.

http://www.highdefdigest.co...

Notes that the PS3 will do 3d in 1080P though are incorrect. 1.3 doesn't have the bandwidth that is necessary to do this.

badz1495858d ago (Edited 5858d ago )

if I'm not mistaken, HDMI 1.3 can't simply be updated to 1.4 with firmware updates! just as much as USB 2.0 can't to USB 3.0! they are both hardware related! it's just that Sony made it so 1.3 is capable of doing 3D although HDMI 1.4 would be best!

edit: logikill beats me to it

kneon5858d ago

HDMI 1.3 and 1.4 have the same data rate so it is in theory possible to upgrade via firmware. Whether the PS3 can be upgraded in this way is a different story, we don't know the answer to that one yet.

Vinster5858d ago (Edited 5858d ago )

not getting into the debate here but an excellent read about HDMI and 3d can be read here http://www.hometoys.com/ezi...

TotalPS3Fanboy5858d ago (Edited 5858d ago )

That's why games like Killzone 3 will not be in 3D. Because the PS3 can not be updated to do 3D.

We must wait for PS4 to be able to do that. /s

darthv725857d ago

It is a matter of fancy software to go along with the hdmi connection and 3d capable tv. There is a company that demonstrated 3d on 360 a few years back. http://www.next3d.com

They even had a beta program people signed up for but MS put a halt on them going through with it. Most likely because they were already working on their own form of 3d. That is just speculation but it did show that the 1.2 hdmi did work for 3d movies and games.

PS3 i believe is hdmi 1.3a/b and has features that are now standard in 1,4 but you cant make it 1.4 with a fw update. That would be like saying the new iphone os will make a 3g or 3gs version in an iphone 4. New features get unlocked but hardware is still limited by design.

if MS say it will do it on the 360 at one point, thn it can happen,we jut gotta wait and see

D4RkNIKON5858d ago

Up for red and blue glasses? not me!

Scrooge McDuck5858d ago

i thought you need atleast hdmi 1.3 to do 3d and dont the 360 hdmi only support hdmi 1.2?

AuToFiRE5858d ago (Edited 5858d ago )

you need 1.4 for 3D through HDMI, 1.3 was able to be updated to 1.4, 1.2 cant be updated, sony definitely planned ahead

logikil5858d ago

You are not correct AutoFire. You need to do some research. A software patch wont magically change hardware. 1.3 cant transform to 1.4 by software. It is physically different hardware.

Microsoft Xbox 3605858d ago

Except the HDMI controller in the PS3 is future-proofed. 1.3 may not be upgradeable in other devices but Sony definitely did plan ahead on this.

AuToFiRE5858d ago (Edited 5858d ago )

what do you think updates actually are? firmware is a program inserted into hardware to allow it to communicate with the software, but firmware can only be upgraded to an extent due to the hardware, aka the xbox 360 and the HDMI 1.2, after HDMI 1.2 the hardware changed drastically and was unable to be upgraded, on the other hand, HDMI 1.3 (which the ps3 has) is not much different from 1.4, so 1.3 can be upgraded to 1.4 with a firmware update, of course the 1.3 updated to 1.4 wont be 'as' fast as a native 1.4 but it still adds the features and makes it work, especially with the ps3 where it can use the power of teh c3ll to compensate for any lack in power

and at all eventual disagrees - i got a piece of advice for you - im pretty sure you buy a really thick HDMI cable to and listen to the store clerks, the thicker the HDMI cable is doesnt matter, you are only getting ripped off, HDMI is a digital signal therefore you dont need a high impotence cable for a low impotence signal

"Digital Foundry vs. 3D Gaming
January 9th, 2010"

Yeah and almost every person who got to experience 3D gaming @ GDC were blown away. Your point?

freeblue5858d ago

as we speak, they will just cook up a fake nintendo head tracking "3D effects" using natal. they will advertise it that you odn't need glasses or special TVs, coming soon. of coruse you'll not see it until next gen. 360. but it will buy MS enough time for the next two years.

outrageous5858d ago (Edited 5858d ago )

This has been mentioned before. M$ has an agreement with LG for a 3D 360 bundle that will release in Korea, and depending on how much interest 3D generates, may release in other areas. M$ doesn't see a long term interest in 3D. Of course Sony does and has gone all out to promote 3D.

To answer your question, the 360 has 3D capability built in. We may here about it at E3. The bundle goes on sale at the end of June. Deal was signed in early May. Like I said, OLD NEWS.

In regards to health effects and if they are real? Panasonic is going ful speed ahead in their push to sell ( very expensive ) 3dTv's and a spokesman had said that while viewing a 3D movie in one position is one thing, he doesn't think gaming is the right platform for the tech. It would be like riding a roller coaster for an hour. There will be many articles incoming on the dangers of prolonged exposure to 3D.

jjesso19935858d ago (Edited 5858d ago )

Not like ps3 can It dose not have HDMI 1.3 or higher the diffrence is the 360 hdmi dose not have the right amount bandwidth the only other way is to make a device like Nvida 3d the glasses sink the device all that would need then would be 120hz monitor.

Lol if a natal and 3D game were released, the additional resources these two consumed would leave whatever game it was trying to render looking like a Wii game.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio55d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing55d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9255d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit55d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing55d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9255d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn258d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn257d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown57d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay57d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay57d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac57d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger57d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300057d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde57d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde57d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_56d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
