i did not buy my xbox360 to be a ten year console, i bought it to play good games now at a good price with an excellent online service.. now!!

i would not mind in the slightest upgrading in 3-5 years, because at end of day my setup was relatively cheap in comparison to the competition, and ive never ever been so hooked by a gaming console, ever.. i used to buy the playstations, and ive no doubt that they are gonna win whatever war is happening, because for years they had no serious competition (no offence nintendoboys). The xbox360 has been my best console to date, games are excellent, online is excellent, and its just a great all rounder, with so many cool features that keep being upgraded..

What i am surprised at is how well microsoft has done, like sony is a big console manufacturer to go in competition with and noone can deny how well they have done.

Like sony he seems to claim things that are untrue to make sony look dominate. Lets take this back a couple days ago at E3. At E3 Sony claimed all but 2 or 3 games were exclusive to their console alone. Never once did they say they had a "Timed Exclusive",but for one game that was a multi platform game. This stuned me that sony could lie out there a** about the exclusivity of games when only but 2 or 3 were exclusive to their console. You know what im no way am I a Fanboy to any console as they all have there pros and cons. I'm the kind of person who does anything I can to get the Fanboys to STFU and chill.

Only Sony has claimed a 10 year life cycle for their machine. Typically the cycle has been 5 years. Logically M$ would release a new console in 5 years time. If Sony wishes really really hard maybe M$ will just vanish. Sony's problem is that like most people and organizations they believe that their position at the top of the wheel is natural and destined to continue. The reality is that it takes hard work to get there and more hard work to stay there.

Most console last for 5 YEARS so to imply that the 360 is not sustainable for 10 years is probably correct in many ways. By then we'll have an Xbox 720 or whatever, and the 360 will no doubt be available in an ultra slimline form...we'll also probably see announcements from sony on the PS4.

His pointless crooning about HD-DVD being dead is exactly what you'd expect someone from the Sony PR machine to say, just like you'd expect M$ to say Digital Distribution is the future...who is right? Only time will tell.

Sony is the forcing people to buy a new HD-TV with 1080p and HDMI ,if they dont have one to enjoy the consoles full functionality. Also PS3's online gaming sucks ass and copies every single option that Xbox live put out. Maybe people will pay for better service that sony cant seem to get right. the Xbox 360 is not a 10 year console. By the 5th year of the console cycle, MS would be releasing a product 10x superior to the playstation 3, adding DirectX 10 to the mix. Whether HD DVD is dead within months is inconsequential either because Microsoft doesn't have a stake in that war. They could release a blue ray addon, and stick with the downloadable movie service if hd dvd fails. The size is not a problem with DVD either with 99% of current games only using 1 disc, and 2 dvd disc is not that much of a inconvenience. The successor to the Xbox 360 should have a hd dvd, blue ray, or maybe holographic disc...

This does not mean they can say what ever they want. Sony needs some humble pie. This generation will be over in 2 1/2 years and Sony is just getting off the finish line.

and yes Sony had a great E3, but besides KZ2 (which look amazing for a standard FPS) that wont be released till 2008 sometime and GT4 that wont be releases till 2008-9 sometime all the others were ok. The timed exclusives haze and UT3 are coming to 360, and yes heavenly sword and Lair looked good, but were getting bioshock and mass effect this year.

As fast as technology changes, why would you want to hold on for 10 years, 5 years tops. I hope they do not wait that long to make a PS4, as other systems come out with newer more advanced hardware it will make the PS3 look pretty bad. ...that Sony will be here for the long-run. The fact of the matter is PS3 is a true entertainment hub and HD will be taking over and MS knows that incorporating it for gaming is not feasible. And the games that we've/will see for 360 has reached or nearly reached its full potential, IMO. In other words, there's little room for improvement. While the Devs has just scratched the surface of the true power of PS3. And btw, Wii, it won't last. Give it another 2-3 years and you will find the Wiis resting and collecting dust.

I personally think Sony is going for the 7 year full support + 2 years half-support + 1 year 1/4 support plan. Unfortunetly Moores law doesn't necessarily equate to guaranteed success as evidence through the Nintendo Wii. A sustainable plan implies long term and yes this is all marketing. Microsoft has never said anything about a 10 year plan but I think their hardware will not be sustainable 2 years from now. All signs point to Blu Ray being the format of choice. This is why I think the PS3 can be sustainable as Blu Ray is the wild card. Forget the CPU and GPU for a minute. Sony has Blu Ray, Nintendo has the Wiimote. Microsoft has ... Now I think many of you will say Xbox Live. I say, so what. Live is a service. Both Nintendo and Sony have the ability to match it or even surpass it.

Ps3 will be around awhile. Ps2 is around now for what 7-8 years already. I definitely think BluRay will beat HD-DVD, however I don't think BluRay is necessary for next gen games. Look at Oblivion. It's long enough. I don't want anything bigger than that, for the sake of my attention span.

I realize more space allows for better graphics as well, but the graphics for the two systems looks to remain roughly equal if not the slight edge going to the 360 thus far. Compression techniques are also getting better. DVD9 is fine for running games this gen.

This guy is speaking the truth. MS should have come out with one design for the 360 with a hard drive, and put a little more tech into it. Now these hardware issues are making international news and everyone's aware of it. When you pay the kind of money that these systems cost quality is the first thing you want. I own a ps3 and my son has a 360. I can see from playing both systems which one is in it for the long haul. Seems that Sony is showing and prooving that they have more to offer. Right now MS is showing me nothing other than HALO 3, but since I'm not a 12 yr old I could care less about it. MS has some work to do.

HD-DVD is beating Blu-ray hands down in Europe and vice a versa in the States, Xbox 360 is still selling 2-1 over the PS3 on a global scale and the Wii is flying off the shelves so fast that it's becoming ridiculous.

At the end of the day it's all down to personal preference and price point.

I have a 360 and a Wii and have no intention of buying a PS3 not because I think the machine is crap but because the games I want to play are on the 2 that I own. The PS3 is on paper the better machine but that was the Case with the original Xbox and in that case the PS2 still sold more units because that's where the games were. This time around the opposite is the case, the games are on 360 and Wii and as a consumer I will follow the games that I like. I'm loyal to the games publishers not the hardware manufacturers.

360 is only ahead because it had one year head start, and considering that it isnt doing so well, i mean sales could be up because the 360's stopped working *shrugs. im not a fanboy, i have a ps3 and will get a 360, but what stopped me from getting a 360 is its failure rate, i know like 12 people who had their 360's fry, not to mention all the stories. i'll wait till they release the batch that works.

There is NO WAY that PS3's gonna stay 10 years on market alone against Micro$oft and Nintendo. In 4-5 years from now, Xbox 720 and Wii 2 (or whatever) will be on market, and PS3 will be obsolete. Sony will stick to their plan - 10 years life-cycle - but 5-6 years from now, we'll be probably looking at PS4...

The average lifespan for consoles is 5-6 years before the same company released another console. The Playstation 3 may still be selling 10 years from now... but Sony is not being very specific about this... selling where? The PS2 keep selling for one main reason... the PS3 price... that's all.. if the PS3 would be cheaper people would not buy a PS2 since the PS3 can play PS2 games and the PS2 would only be selling in those countries where the PS2 is now cheap enough for them to afort it.
Microsoft never promised that the xbox 360 was going to be around 10 years from now. Sony did. I will be happy if microsoft releases another console in 2-3 years... that would be 5-6 years wich is the average of any console... after that.. microsoft could drop the price of the XBox 360 to $99 and milk it like Sony is doing with the PS2 and make it available in countries where they can't afort a $400 machine which probably be the cost of the xbox 720.
It's obvious that Sony does not want to release another console for a while; blu-ray was a big investment... and it will be years before they make that money back... they can't just bring another console and start losing even more money... To microsoft on every iteration of xbox it gets easier.. as they get more experience.... XBox live is already stablished.. and they will not have the same problem they had with the BC. I will own a PS3 so... if Sony promises 10 years.. that's great.

Microsoft has never stated they have a 10 year plan. Never been in their outlook. They're perfectly happy coming out with hardware, reasonably priced, every 5 or 6 years. They decided not to tack on Blu-Ray in this gen, keep their price lower than PS3, and they're reaping the benefits of that (early on). But seriously, by the time 2011 rolls around, we're all gonna be staring at what the PC games look like in awe, and the consoles will need to go through another update.

The PS3 might last 8 years. Might. The PS2 has lasted that long, but now the software is drying up, as developers turn their attention to the new gen stuff. I suspect that Sony will have to understand that turning the crank more frequently but with fewer bells and whistles is a strategy that their competition is going to go with.

Last gen, Sony promised the Moon and Stars with the Emotion Engine, claiming the PS2 would be a home entertainment hub for the next decade, providing visuals never before achievable.

Then the XBOX comes out and dumps all over the PS2 visuals, using standard PC components.

The PS2 was NEVER able to achieve graphics like the XBOX, even with late titles like MGS3, SoTC, and GOW2; Ninja Gaiden, Thief:DS, Riddick and Splinter Cell: CT dumped all over those games...and came out MUCH earlier. Yet, Sony is still milking the PoS2, and ruining next-gen gaming in the process (Stuntman: Ignition is the latest crappy PS2 port to grace next-gen consoles).
MS wisely moves on to their next platform, so they can improve upon what they learned from the inaugural XBOX, and made a no-apologies, clean break from the outdated Box. Thank you for caring about the quality of games, MS.

Fast forward to today, when the scenario is eerily similar to before, except that MS had the 1-year headstart, instead of Sony.
The 360 has proven to be at least equal to, if not better in some cases, to the overhyped Cell-driven PS3 hardware. Sony once again overpromised with the PS3, showing bogus CGI to the world with games like Motorstorm, KZ2, Tekken 6, DMC4, etc back in 2005. MS, on the otherhand, showed nothing but REAL games, even repeating the Halo 1 faux pas, by showing rough PDZ and Too Human footage, rather than wait until they were ready. With FNR3, PGR3, Kameo, Oblivion, GRAW, Gears, Lost Planet, etc., MS showed fairly early why they dropped the XBOX, with no apologies.
However, they wasted little time in hinting at a 360 successor, and will likely follow through with a PC/Cell-beating successor within 4 years time. They NEVER mentioned a 10-yr. strategy, because they knew the PC would be leaving the 360 and Cell behind withing 2-3 years. Their next console will need to be 4-6 cores, 1-2 gigs of RAM, and will likely use a HD-DVD/Blu-Ray hybrid, or even Holographic disc technology as a storage medium. Sony, on the otherhand, will still be milking Cell, and pushing Blu-Ray, until at least 2016.

So, Mr. Dilleweed, you're correct: the 360 isn't sustainable for 10 years...and MS knew that going in. You see, they aren't arrogant enough to believe ANYTHING in the electronics industry is "future proof"; hell, after 3 years, most "new" tech is obsolete. Sony SHOULD understand that, since THEY are the big, bad tech gurus, who've been doing R&D for decades now; problem is, there's a double-edged sword at work, that forces them to stick with said technologies too long, so they can recover their costs, and make a huge profit down the road. That's all well and good....but the end user suffers from it. Give MS credit for paying attention to what gamers want, and not the shareholders.

MS isn't bothered about blu-ray or hd-dvd. 9GB DVD's are fine for GAMES. I have yet to see a 360 game on 2 discs. If it does then oh lord lets put another disc in. ::SHOCK:: You know I hated RE4 when I had to put the 2nd disc in on my GC.

When you have to write more complex code to do something in the game and to harness more technology, you become more proficient at coding in general. Even though it's a hassle at first, you always learn to appreciate it in the end. They go back to do something that was once hard, and it’s suddenly that much easier. People experience this in other facets of life as well. There are many developers out there who like a challenge. They are the ones who will push the hesitant developers along. Things are shaking up...that's assured.

The PS3 may not last 10 years, but the PS2 is still popular at 6 years. It's not that large of a stretch, but it may not go the whole 10.

Last gen, Sony promised the Moon and Stars with the Emotion Engine, claiming the PS2 would be a home entertainment hub for the next decade, providing visuals never before achievable.

Then the XBOX comes out a year later and less than maybe equal to PS2 visuals, and using sh###y games no one liked.

The XBOX was NEVER able to achieve gameplay as good as PS2, But the CT's graphics dumped all over those games...but and the gameplay sucked. Heck, Sony is still selling the PS2, and still releasing games for it in the process (Stuntman: Ignition is the latest crappy Xbox port to grace next-gen consoles).
Sony wisely moves on to their next platform, so they can improve upon what they learned from the inaugural 2 past consoles unlike MS, and made a no-apologies, clean break from the outdated Box. Thank you for caring about the quality of games, Sony.

Fast forward to today, when the scenario is eerily similar to before, except that MS had the 1-year headstart, instead of Sony.
The PS3 has proven to be greater than, if not way better than, to the overhyped standard pc hardware 360. PS3 With FNR3, GT4, LittleBigPlanet, Oblivion, GRAW2, KZ2, RFOM, etc., Sony showed Microsoft fairly early why microsoft's console is losing the console war, with no apologies.
However, they wasted little time in hinting at a PS3 successor, and will likely follow through with a PC/Cell-beating successor within 5 years time. They NEVER mentioned a 10-yr. strategy, because they knew the PC would be leaving the PS3 and Cell behind withing 2-3 years. Their next console will need to be 6-8 cores, 4-6 gigs of RAM, and will likely still use a Blu-Ray, or maybe Holographic disc technology as a storage medium. Microsoft, on the otherhand, will still be milking standard pc hardware, and pushing already lost HD-DVD, until at least year 6257.

I can't see the HD-DVD dying that quickly, especially the way it's outselling Blu-Ray in Europe (3 to 1). However, I do believe that in order to have better gaming, they're going to need more space on their discs (case in point: MGS4). Only having DVD's for their games really restricts many game makers' ability to make games that stand out from the competition.

Regardless, Peter Dille doesn't have much class going about this in such a way...

I don't beleive that sony will even try to carry the ps3 for 10 years as their main console. They may expect it to be around that long, but by then they will have already made a newer gen console. More and more people are being put off by 360's breakdowns. I alone know several people who have dropped their 360's for PS3 and are not looking back. Let's face it, if your not happy with your XBOX 360 what is the next alternative, a Wii? Please don't kid yourself. PS3 is the only other choice for HD console gaming. And the PS3 has proven itself to be a quality product. So now people aren't just paying the extra money for all that extra functionality. They are paying for the quality. Who wants a console that has a 1000 game library, if it's going to breakdown, or possibly breakdown while your playing them. This is something everyone's overlooking. well i think blu-ray will also play a mjor role in reaching the ir goal. even if they release the ps4 ps3 will still be around like the ps2 cause they know how to support their product.

I am pretty sure the PS4 will be out in another 4-5 years.I think what Sony meant with the 10 year cycle is that they will support PS3 that long before they stop completely. In developing countries like where i live i still see PS1 and alot of PS2 which are mostly use and are still being sold here because generally thats what people here in these parts of the world can afford. I still haven't seen a PS3, Xbox or Wii being sold here. To me this is more of a affirmation that if you buy a PS3 rest assured that Sony will support your investment for 10 years even if you don't buy a PS4. Sony almost did it with PS1 as well as PS2. Hell there are still alot of games coming out for PS2. With the technology they packed into PS3, I don't see any reason why PS3 won't be revelent to third world countries like mine in 10 years time.Sony is a global company that thinks globally and long term.

This is what takes place in this market, even Reggie Fils-aime talks mess about these 2 companies. But what he speaks is the truth at least for the time being.

Back to Dile's comments. Fact is yeah the 360 is leading the race right now, but the cuts they made to reach that goal does not speak well for the "Hardcore" consumer. The GPU they used is the best out there in any console out now, that includes the PS3's but everything else in the box is out-dated. The DVD format is to small for modern games that will be coming out and the fact that they took a step backwards after they established the whole concept of a HDD being included in console and released a SKU without an HDD leaves developers a little short-handed as far as the added help a HDD brings to production.
The CPU is already out-dated and the box itself has been reported to have a very high number of break-downs. Having games is all well and good(fact thats the best part of the 360) but if the machine is breaking down on a consistent bases and not allowing gamers to play those games or limiting their time with the games then whats the point.

Having a Mercedes is great, but if it's always in the shop what was the point of buying it?

Pick your poison, the main point is you have 4 M3's and thats great I wish I could afford those, but you are the exception to the rule. You can afford to enjoy your money, even if that means you might have to invest a little more into those products later on. Financially I am not where I would like to be right now, so I always have to be a little more careful with my money. I have to make sure that whatever I buy right now last me for awhile. And to me that's why a PS3 makes sense. Yeah it's a little more expensive then the competition but all the added features it has (Blu-Ray, WI-FI, Memory card reader, etc) and the reliability that it has shown makes it a safer bet for me. Games are a little scarce at the moment I have owned 5 PS3 game I usally finish them and traded them in and see what else I can grab, but since the 1.80 firmware update I have gone back to playing some PS2 games that I missed or just didn't finish and it works out. Different strokes for different folks I guess but it seems your in a better financial situation to go with more enjoyable product (at least for now it is *360*) then I so more power to you.

P.S. Since you have the money get a Yamaha R1, I ride a FZ6 and let me tell you when you hit open road there is nothing greater.

You know that DVD started as a movie format,right?
the CD format started as a music format.
The fact is there has to be an evolution in storage format.
Not sure if you are old enough to remember times when we used plastic covered memory chips to play our games. The reason why we don't use them any more is because the space for information is limited so is the speed in which a machine can retrieve information from it without causing it to melt before our very eyes is also limited.
I don't care at the end which format wins whether it's blu-ray or hd-dvd. Fact is that this industry has shown throughout history that a bigger format for it's games have been needed in order to give it's consumers the best possible product. If not so why didn't the PS2 and Xbox use a CD format for games? Cause it just wasn't practical. Am not saying that Blu-ray is needed now but games will soon need more space then a DL-DVD and as far as I see it Sony is the only company that has prepared for that move to take place.

MS doesn't care about hd-dvd or bluray, and why would they care. Is the socalled death of hd-dvd gonna have an effect on great games coming on the 360? Hell no, off course not! They're not dependant of hd-dvd.

The 360 isn't meant to last for 10 years! Basically what MS wanted to do with 360 was create a next-gen platform that was cheap in price. Sony has this idea of a platform that can last for 10 years.

$600 is the number we are looking at here. Now sony would like for you to believe that for that price you will be future proof.

1) The ps2 had all kinds of problems like "Disc Read Error", so people still remember that when they look at the price tag for ps3.

2) They say ps3 will lead by the year 2009, but by that time the new Nintendo and MS console will be coming out.

3) By 2009-10, the ps3 should be about $400. MS new console will have more power than the ps3 and whatever cost effective DVD format is popular at the time... and the price for their new console should be about $400.

4) The worst part about the whole thing is, by that time Nintendo will probably have a console as powerful, or more powerful than the ps3.

5) Don't let these people fool you, technology gets out of date pretty quickly, look at cellphones and computers(about every 6 months, something new comes out), home consoles have a longer lifespan averaged at about 5 years.

In closing..."FUTURE PROOF"...Huh...huh...HAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Marketing people are hired basically to get you to believe whatever crap a company wants you to believe. The same goes for MS and Nintendo!

Don't worry about HD-DVD and Blu-ray, they will both probably be replaced by new technology by next year! Like the HVD technology, which is said to hold 300GBs of data. Or even the TVD technology. Or something else new.

So sony can boast the blu-ray tech, but I can guarantee you... it won't live past 2010!

OK - when they say 10 year life cycle they DON'T mean 10 years till PS4. They mean that they'll be in production for 10 years. Remember the Playstation? They built them for 10 years. PS2 is on track for the same. As the costs come down and the price comes down these "older" systems take on new life in markets other than Japan, Europe, and North America.

New hardware is always going to be affected by competition. I would think that Sony would like to bring PS4 in say 2013, but who knows what the market will dictate by then - that's what matters ultimately.

The point of the whole 10 year cycle is more about people who want a cheap alternative to the cutting edge. take the ps1 for instance. it launched in '94 in japan (i think)people were still buying them in 2004.
I for one will have moved on to the Playstation 5 that plugs into your skull to play games. I also expect it to dispense magical beer. Hmmmm off topic...
