Hackers Already Working on USB Update Exploits

Xboxic Reports: It has come to the attention of modding groups that once the Xbox 360 associated files are saved on a USB memory device they appear unreadable on any computer, with the folder list displaying itself as empty. Futher investigation by the group has revealed that a folder named XBOX360 is kept hidden, and all Xbox 360 transferred items contained within it are stored together grouped in files that are unable to be individually extracted. With the current USB update, Microsoft has made saved content more difficult to access than previous memory card methods which was to simply insert the card into a device that plugs straight into your computer and copy it across using drag & drop. Folders are now encrypted files, and content transferred to USB memory from the Xbox 360 are stored within the files together rather than listed individually as numbered content.

Within just a few hours of the update, a member of the modding group is already claiming to have hacked the security methods on the files to try and create a program that extracts content to a PC desktop.

128gb usb flash stick please mr hacker ^_^

darthv725885d ago

just only 16gb are actually useable by the 360.

On topic: I wouldnt want to mess with this. May be fun for the hackers to proclaim but the rest of us will just continue to game as usual.

Actually...I am sort of waiting for a UMD to psp go hack.

Sunny_D5884d ago

Hey lets BLOW THIS OUT OF PROPORTION!!!!!!!!!!!

meh...

presto7175884d ago

Like do these guys get paid? Or do they just do it out of the love of their hearts?

rexus123455884d ago

viruses/spyware can be more easily transfered from a flash drive than through Microsoft's servers.

Ch1d0r15884d ago

Do you not know how slow solid state drives can be.

avengers19785884d ago

They will be successful in a matter of days, if not already. My advice to everyone is not to use modded usb drives, MS is probably on the look out for stuff like that and it will most likely get you banned from xbl.

StanLee5884d ago

So when Microsoft has it's next wave of banning, we're going to have a bunch of cry babies saying they didn't deserve it right?

Funny, MS releases all this "thick" DRM that continues to tick off their customers more and more and the hackers can crack it within a day.

Get the message MS, all you are doing is making your legit customers unhappy with the Nazi style lock downs you do on everything. While the hackers cut through it like butter.

Redgehammer5885d ago

Why would I be mad at MS for trying to protect their property and the property of their partners? Thus far I have not found any of MS anti-piracy measure to be a hassle to my gaming experience(s)(but I don't mod). As far as I am concerned hackers and cheaters are so inextricably tied together that my admiration of the skill involved in hacking is over-ridden by my complete and utter loathing of cheaters.

360FTW25884d ago (Edited 5884d ago )

Hackers are going to do what they do. Technically, there's no way to really stop them. But sometimes an otherwise honest person may be tempted to give stuff to his friend if there is not DRM or other protection in place.

Although they may think this is harmless, this type of behavior spreads like wildfire and before you know it, nothing is selling, which in turn result in higher prices and people continuing to whine.

One thing that I have learned over the years is that no matter what you do in life, you are NEVER going to make everyone happy. People complaining about not enough space on the Arcade machines, MS tries to come up with some sort of alternative memory, and then for some strange reason, (because a common criminal decides to exploit it) you see it as something that MS did wrong. This HOT and Cold behavior is very confusing and actually quite pointless.

They are in business to make money as is all businesses. I can already see MS doing another update that makes your 360 run some sort of checksum or something on your saved files and if they have been modified, you'll simply get banded. Then here we go again, "MS banning innocent people" So they say.

Edit: @Excalibur Below-(4) EXACTLY, you hit the nail right on the head.

Mo0eY5884d ago

Funny how these hackers can cut through this like 'butter' yet it takes four years for hackers to even crack the PS3's surface.

dragonelite5884d ago

You know why hackers ignored the ps 3 for so long.
Is because of the Other Os they could run homebrew software even if the other os is just a crippled ps 3. Now that sony planned to remove other Os they just open a Can of worms. Geohot only needed what 2 month to get this far.

And for information the 360 is not hacked in the way that you can have custom firmware. All they have done is fool the dvd drive to always give a legit signal. And im sure microsoft scans those usb on startup flag the 360 that have them and ban them in the next wave.

IdleLeeSiuLung5884d ago (Edited 5884d ago )

I have not seen any DRM on any console related game/peripheral in any way that is intrusive and that is among the reasons I would just rather stick with them than PC....

Unless you consider non-standard accessories a DRM i.e. laptop hard drives don't work with the 360 out of the box....

maxcer5884d ago

i wouldn't be surprised if MS was legally obliged to include DRM and piracy measures, even though they are mickey mouse attempts.

GiantEnemyCrab5884d ago (Edited 5884d ago )

I've ran into more than one occasion when I try to move a file to or from the Xbox via USB it won't let me. It does get in the way for me.

No, I don't blame MS for trying to keep their property protected but when it's done sloppy it just ends up being a hassle for legit users and the hackers have it cracked open and bypassed. So the original effort to stop hackers fails and the legit user is left to deal with it.

There is a point when DRM stops being worth it. However, they will never stop battling and the hackers will never stop cracking it open.

rezzah5884d ago

lol all you said was nice and you already got 4 disagrees. =p

anyways i guess this hack would be a good thing in a way which would make it easier to move files around, having it stuck to the usb alone kinda sucks. Reminds me of the ps1 and ps2 memory cards, even though i didnt have a problem with em now. I dont see why anyone would buy this product.

RockmanII75883d ago

there probably disagreeing with his name

Excalibur5885d ago (Edited 5885d ago )

when M$ bans you. ;)

It amazes me that no matter what people are given it's never enough and they have to B!tch about it.

Another One5884d ago

People with an inflated sense of entitlement are rampant now-a-days.

mrv3215885d ago

Imagine if Microsoft removes this features... let's see how people will act then regarding the otherOS.

kaveti66165884d ago

This is a half assed feature in the first place. Give everyone cheap hard drives with large memory and this kind of crap wouldn't even be necessary.

ps3sux25884d ago

Thanks for coming, the door is this way ---> Lock it behind you.
Oh, one more thing, don't bother coming back.

duplissi5884d ago

lol....... it IS a half assed feature. 16gbs woo so much more space......
there is only one reason why it isnt more than 16gbs - microsoft still wants to rape us over with their overpriced hdds....

you know but maybe since your a fanboy your ok with that.

maxcer5884d ago

@5.3 "there is only one reason why it isn't more than 16gbs"

any limit sucks balls. but i remember a thread on neogaf where someone was taking a closer look at the MU's and discovered a 16GB limit for the MU's. but this is MS and overpriced plastic is their game.

kaveti66165884d ago

Did I say something that merits me being sent to the open zone? The irony is that your username is more deserving of a ban than anything I said.

duplissi5884d ago

@maxcer

yeah, flash storage... but i can only allot 16gbs on my 500gb western digital passport, and the xbox reads the rest of that just fine.

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde25d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy25d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
