It's PlayStation not Playstation...

Yep, I agree with this. Give me an old fashioned FPS arena game like UT any time over a COD like game with perks and favoritism because of the people that are more dedicated or addicted.

I've been kind of vindictive lately towards game developers and their Rank systems, simply because its not my definition of competitive gameplay.

I understand adding perks and streak rewards give the game a sort of depth, but take Bad Company 2 for example, one of my favorite shooters right now, completely ruined by its rank system.

If a new player joins a full server, he/she is severely outgunned by anyone with a higher rank, and not because their simply better, but because they've unlocked BETTER items/weapons.

A new recruit is bare, carrying only a main weapon, sidearm, and depending on the class, a grenade launcher or rocket launcher.

A player a few ranks ahead, can have better main weapons, better sidearms, increased bullet damage, increased player speed, extra ammo, more grenades, ammo boxes, health packs/paddles, motion mines, and vehicle perks, etc.

The biggest problem is, most people suck it up and keep playing, only to find themselves just as powerful later on, preying on the weak and thinking nothing of it.

Hopefully a game comes around and brings back that classic FPS gameplay... you know the ones that had you earn every kill accordingly, without holding your hand, without giving you special abilities, and without all the mainstream catered "hooks" seen in every MP game released lately.

This SH!T just got real!!!!!

That was from this column writer, and honestly its true, and its killing my favorite medium, or at least giving it an ugly beating.

My friends play online shooters and MMOs, my supervisors play online shooters, etc

And yet, when I ask everyone what they thought of this game or that games campaign mode, they look at me like I'm crazy.

I brought up Dead Space at work, and how it is one of my favorite horror games of all time, next to Doom, Condemned, Fear, Silent Hill, etc of course...

and they look at me like I'm crazy, then go back to talking about their AC130 kills the night before.

Even bringing up REAL multiplayer shooters that require skill make them scowl. I tell them that a match of Tribes CTF back in the day truly required skill and definitely teamwork. Check Vid.

Again, I'm waiting for a developer to release a ridiculously amazing shooter, that also slaps mainstream gamers in the face, offering some sort of challenge.

I'm talking kickass weapons that are even to some degree, teamwork encouragement, no powerups and special abilities, no ranks or prestige nonsense, and how bout some randomly generated map and terrain layouts to keep people on their toes, instead of sitting at the same sniper spot every round.

It's only opinion of course. I know games are like this now because it keeps people coming back for more, but its just sad ya know... :/
