Erm. you DON'T need hdmi. Its nice, its better, but it isn't absolutely essential. I don't know a whole lot of people spending over $2000 (really its more like $3000) on a TV where you would see the visual difference between component and HDMI.

The native resolution of the 360 is 720p (ok yeah, a FEW games do true 1080p without the scaler). Why would you HAVE to have hdmi?

It would have been nice if they included HDMI 1.3 (the elite doens't do hdmi 1.3 keep in mind) so you could get Dolby TrueHD with the HD-DVD add-on. If it wasn't for that I would get the hd-dvd drive.

Hmm. I got some people who disagree.

Maybe there is more to the HDMI issue. But seriously...can someone tell me why HDMI is essential? It seems to me like component would be ESSENTIAL and HDMI would just be nice to have.

Can anyone point me to any comparisons that show the difference between HDMI and Component 1080p?

I did a quick google search and I actually found some people that suggest component actually has better colors than HDMI/DVI and on consumer devices its a moot point. In fact it seems like the big push for HDMI is mostly because the big companies want the HDCP DRM. That and again the only way to get Dolby TrueHD is with hdmi which is a moot point with the 360.

So really, how can you possibly disagree with the statement that you don't NEED hdmi?

Well, what did you expect? they need to justify why they paid $600 for on a PS3 when they could have brought a 360 + Wii. They probably don't even own a HD TV, let alone HDMI cables.

I own a 6.1 YAMAHA AV Receiver with a Bose Acoustimass 5 Series III set up, this is what the averge consumer has. Not buying the HD-DVD player for the 360 because of the lack of 1.3 HDMI isnt what average people care about. More power to you.

Coming in here trying to justify what Sony has said trying to pin MS's quotes as in the same boat is ridiculous to me, HDMI is still not needed Sony win hands down and the most extream comment Sony made are not even listed in this news post.

(360 is 1.5, MS's shooting for the moon as we're shooting for the Sun, PS3 launch titles will be untouchable durring the 360's entire life span, SKu's will be confusing to consumers, online is not what gamers want?. It goes on and on get the hell out of here and stop trying to justify Sonys BULLSHIT with a twist of one comment MS made which isn't what they meant. lol

* PS3 is 3X more powerful...

* The Xbox 360 is a Xbox 1.5...

* We're shooting for the Sun while MS is shooting for the Moon(is it practical to go to the Sun?)

* PS3 launch tittles will be untouchable and the 360 will never be able to match the PS3 launch titles its entire life cycle.

* Online gaming isn't what gamers want

* Different SKu's will just confuse consumers

* All games will do 1080p at 120 fps

* PSN will match XBL from day one

* Rumble is last generation

on and on Sony wins hands down

#8.1 MS isn't marketing the 360 with BULLSHIT if they are responding with BS then thats something that not hurting the Xbox and something that only news junkies know, Sony's BS has made it to the streets and is doing great harm to the PS3 Million waiting thinking PS3 was going to be some console that plays movies quality games and were let down by the truth after the first launch all the other BS has hurt them too by adding to what i mentioned above.

#13 people are buying HD-DVD matter of fact the players outsell Blu-ray players so its only common sense Studios will look at that as a major resource its only a matter of time.

Choice meaning in giving consumers choice if they wan't HD player options that MS provides, if they want to invest in HD adding cost they might not want to pay for not being able to use it or choose not to use it, do you understand?!. Thats the weakest point yet posting that piece of a guy bugging Peter about something he thinks MS should do and tring to trap MS.

Irony? How do you figure? HDMI is at version 1.3 with only SOME features possible in 1.3. Component hasn't undergone any changes. Component is component. HDMI has several revisions. Sounds like sticking with component is future proof to me. Unless someone can truly provide some evidence that component is going to disappear anytime soon. I don't see the push for HDCP being big enough to make tv manufacturers drop component because of lack of DRM.

It is no lie that the hard drive is EXTREMELY overpriced. a WD 120gig laptop drive is $80 on newegg. So as far as price is concerned, MS is pulling some MAJOR BS moves there. BUT the fact that the hard drive can't be freely swapped with ANY drive is a NECESSARY evil. In order to entice studios to allow their movies on XBL you have to convince them that the DRM protection is strong enough so that people can't just go in there and copy the movies off the 360 hard drive. And the hardwired hard drives are just part of the whole DRM. Frankly, I like the fact that the 360 is so damn hard to hack (and each component of the whole system is a part of it). I really don't feel like dealing with modders on COD3 or Halo 3, etc.

I gather thats what you are saying because of your use of quotes around "minority." Implies that you don't believe it really is the minority of people out there with hardware issues. Very different from Sony quote, "We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even it didn't have games."

But I think... they were right... the PS3 has NO games! compared to the 360... I think they are trying to stick to what they said.
Maybe after the 5th million console is sold... they will work on the games... lol.

How is that for a quote that true gamers that play actually play games can care about... hdmi! hah!

alright, I'll give you that one. the SOLE purpose of the elite was to try to get a marketing "one-up" on sony. AND the HDMI port they added isn't even HDMI 1.3, it is an older limited version of HDMI, so no dolby true HD with hd-dvds.

Some people are showing SLIGHTLY better quality with the hdmi on high end tvs. But otherwise there was no reason at all to add HDMI other than marketing BS.

So yeah...kinda stupid of them to say it isn't needed and then turn right around and add it anyway this late in the game.
