How Microsoft blew it with Windows Mobile

Microsoft Windows continues to dominate the PC market with a 90 percent market-share stronghold, but when it comes to smartphones, Microsoft is getting beat up worse than a mustachioed villain in a Jackie Chan movie.

Windows Mobile has lost nearly a third of its smartphone market share since 2008, research firm Gartner reports. Windows Mobile had 11 percent of the global smartphone market in the third quarter of 2008, according to Gartner, and last quarter Windows Mobile's market share plummeted to 7.9 percent.

Meanwhile, Apple's global market share grew from 12.9 percent to 17.1 percent, and RIM saw a rise from 16 percent to 20.8 percent, according to Gartner's figures.

...and blew it with Vista, and blew it with Zune, and blew it with Bing, and blew it with the 360's hardware, and blew it with...

Eiffel6059d ago (Edited 6059d ago )

Pff. Zune out does my brothers iTouch and certainly my friends iPod.

Zune HD is amazingly ace.

Zune HD 32GB
Zune 4GB

Say what you want about everything else. But Microsoft did an amazing job with the Zune. Never had a better Music/Video/Radio player.

darthv726059d ago

That is what you should say gwave. MS ideas are no different than those before them. They just seem to be late to the party. Zune is great but the ipod had already took the industry by storm.

windows mobile is also good. To bad palm and blackberry beat them to it. Practically everything MS has launched has been behind something else that beat them to it.

If MS really wants to go their own way then they need to stop worrying about the other guy and concentrate on what they are good at. Software. Make the software that others will want to use and dont charge an arm and leg for licensing. If they can make a better mobilephone OS and license it properly, companies like RIM and palm and motorola and .....? will use it.

Windows 7 is actually very very good. Impressive and I have not been so enthused in a windows OS since 98. It really makes up for issues people had in vista (although I didnt have any) yet most who felt burned by vista will sadly probably not even try it to see how much improved it really is.

That is just the way people are. When they get it in their heads that they dont want to try something...nothing can change their minds. No matter who much better things are now than before. It is a stigma.

How did they blow it with Bing when it JUST launched official only 5 months ago?

Do you even own a Zune? Like Eiffel said, the Zune HD is actually damn nice. It just will never get the recognition and popularity the leading MP3 player has (the iPod)...kina like Sony and the PSP vs Nintendo and the handheld market. But did Sony blow it with the PSP? No.

But of course, I would expect comments like this from you.

@darthv72

Yeah you're right. Just late to the party is it basically. Anyone who has tried Windows Mobile and say MS "blew it" with that OS is just kissing a new one. Windows Mobile doesn't suck - palm and RIM just have better mobile OSs. Zune is great, but like I said above, the iPod is just the king right now.

Windows 7 is freakin amazing though.

darthv72: Windows Mobile has been around since the late 90s, early 00s long before Blackberry came out. Palm discontinued their old stuff recently and came out with the Pre, Windows Mobile is one of the few veteran systems still standing.

I think Microsoft blew it with apps and hardware manufacturers. Microsoft should have been the first to create a unified store to buy applications from, they are now the last. On the hardware side of things, people simply made crappy phones. It was only until the iPhone came out did they try to get their act together. The software itself is great, flexible, familiar, etc.

I personally love Windows Mobile, I was tempted to get a Pre recently but with reports of your personal data being transmitted to Palm (including GPS data) I decided to wait till things became a bit more clear.

GWAVE: How did they blow it with Zune when it is one of the most popular devices on the market? The Zune already has more market share than the likes of Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, etc when it comes to PMP's. Bing is growing in marketshare on a monthly basis, plus its only been out how many months? The Xbox 360 is only a failure on the RROD side of things, its the most successful Xbox console to date and has made them a ton of money on the software side of things.

Arnon6058d ago

Um... I find Bing to be a lot more polished and accurate compared to Google, and I find the Zune HD to be a lot better than my 16 GB iPod Touch.

freeblue6058d ago

MS did mess up with Zune. Zune has all the ipod has and more. but MS did nothing about it. wireless sharing? where where? now it' just itouch clone wannabe.

all MS has to do is created "local" radio proxy server and partnered with starbuck which allow people with Zune to actually "share" their music wirelessly and starbuck will broadcast it over theri speakers. and If you like others people shared music too, you can buy it wirelessly. It would actually helps Zune get recognitions and revenues. who doens't want to listen to their own music (rather than whatever starbucks' playing) while reading in starbucks???

If they afraid people will send "porn" sound over the speakers, MS can make it so it only allow music purchases through Zune marketplace.

What did they do with its wireless feature??? NOT one single thing.

gaffyh6058d ago

The Zune could have been good, but why the f*** don't they offer it anywhere beside the US? That's the biggest mistake MS made with it, it is very good, and in fact I actually prefer the Zune software over the iTunes software. The hardware is also pretty good, but it just lacks the "wow" factor of an iPod.

Elven66058d ago

I live in Canada and we have the Zune here, I know they were going to release it in Europe but not sure if they got around to it.

TotalPS3Fanboy6058d ago

Now, Microsoft sucks?

Hmm... A very bad choice of words for the title.

As a die hard MS fanboy I wholeheartedly agree that WinMo went down the drain a long time ago. It has been on the market for so long yet it has not progressed at all. WinMo 6.5 and 7 are essentially the same old unstable OS that they released when MS first applied it on colored LCD screens but just a bit fancier.

My biggest regret was buying the HTC Touch HD earlier this year. It was a beautiful device but really lacked in the software department. Too bad the guys at XDA-Developers couldn't port a fully working Android to the phone otherwise I'd keep it. No amount of custom firmware could save that device. It felt outdated and I should have known before shelling out $500 for it. The HD 2 looks promising but no matter how fast that Snapdragon processor is, the WinMo OS will always hold back its true potential. IMO, HTC should abandoned WinMo completely and move on to making all their phones for the Android OS.

It's a shame but that's the way it is. The iPhone and the Androids OS are far superior in every way and they only been on the market since 2007.

mc-fine6058d ago

what is lacking in the software department compared to Android/WebOS? Like solid points on what these new OS do that WinMo doesn't? Cause everytime I weigh the pros and cons all I get is that the new ones are prettier and have nice animated menus/transitions.

Is it the crummy Android browsers that didn't have double tap to zoom until Android 2.0 that is less than 2 weeks old? Opera Mobile on WinMo has been superior for a while.

Is it the crummy Android video player that does not support other codecs and limits your play options? TCPMP/Core Media Player gives you far more options.

Is it bluetooth file transfer that finally got added with Android 2.0?
Is it app install limitations that won't let you install programs on the SD cards?

I am off contract and ready to switch phones and I keep waiting for WebOS or Android to get to the point where I am not missing functionality I have on my old WinMo phone. WinMo is OLD, not as pretty or user friendly. But in terms of what you can do with it a lot of the new OS are still trying to get to that point. It needs a facelift is all as its looked the same for almost 10 yrs now. But its no where as bad as people caught up in the Apple/Google hype make it out to be.

I just hope when WinMo 7 comes out its not a case of "wait a couple years for the OS to reach maturity". I want it to do all I can do with 6.5 and then some.

Handsome_Devil6058d ago

Thank you sir

I do have my phone running with WinMo 6.5, and I'm loving all the things it can do.

In a matter of fact I can not think of one thing my friend iPhone can do or have that I don't, in a matter of fact, I actually can do a lot with my phone that he can not do.

randomwiz6058d ago

you have a touch hd... get manilla 2.5 with winmo 6.5 build 23xxx. After saying that, I can never use any other OS than HTC's Manilla 2.5.

I do agree that winmo is holding HTC back. Their phones are amazing, but winmo bogs them down.

In my opinion, the only thing winmo needs to improve on is speed, and marketplace. The Winmo 6.5 build 23xxx are amazing and beautifully skinned.

devilhunterx6058d ago

Windows Mobile sucks. My next phone is gonna be an Android.

Elven66058d ago

Given your comment history and constant bashing of everything Microsoft for no reason, I highly doubt you've even given a Microsoft product a chance, or are even old enough to own a phone...

Probably down to the high cost of gaming. Controllers and racing wheels can cost as much as consoles.

This is why there will always be competition in gaming. The possibilities to make huge profits is just too enticing.

Pokémon Go Championship Winner Title Revoked for ‘Unsportsmanlike Conduct’

The winner of the Pokémon Go Championship grand finals in Orlando was stripped of their title, allegedly for 'unsportsmanlike conduct' during their victory celebration. The celebration involved the winner removing their headset, standing up, and pumping their fists before shaking hands with their opponent. Many believe the ruling was excessive and that winner's victory celebration was tame compared to celebrations by winners in other competitive games.

There are people that get offended seeing others just enjoying a moment, or enjoying a hobby, or just having fun.

SethNW74d ago

Can someone explain to me what is so problematic with this? I watched video multiple times and all I see dude having bit of celebration. None of his actions felt aggressive or seem like they symbolize anything... Like winning sure deserves bit of celebration like that. I mean who wants to live in the world where you aren't allowed to be excited or have bit of burst of happiness when you win? Like was he supposed to act like emotionless robot? He should be allowed to have bit of his victory "hell yeah" moment, even if it is before shaking hands with opponent. Like it is not like he didn't shake hands or whatnot. And it is not like he is like some super serious government official to have to stick to protocol to a letter. This whole thing is just ridiculous.
