No UMD conversion for PSP Go

I know I won't be slapping down $250 for one of these.

Durrr....

It isn't meant for people who already own PSPs. Sony isn't discontinuing the PSP3000 or forcing developers to stop releasing games on UMD. This is only for those that prefer to not carry around their game library or who don't want to rebuy games if they lose their physical copies and generally people who do not own any UMD games and/or PSPs.

I just think that logic by Sony is just RIDICULOUSLY flawed.

If someone has not wanted a PSP before now, they are certainly not going to drop $250 on this. I really think the only shot Sony had at selling a decent amount of these PSPGOs would be for their MOST HARDCORE fans to buy another PSP.

But since they don't care about UMD conversion, and they've ALSO alluded to the fact that not ALL future games will be available digitally, they're really shooting themselves in the foot.

this totally sucks, i'm not about to re-buy all my games. i have like 15 games.

but the convenience of the Go is really good for travel though since it's all on a mem card.

I remember when Sony said BC was important for the PS3. They went back on their word and removed it. Then they said PSP Go will get a UMD conversion program. Then they went back on their word again. This is all by high ranking Sony officials.

I was interested in a PSP since I kind of outgrew the DS experience, but I'm voting with my wallet. I'm not buying!

They can keep their overpriced piece of technology with limited functionality compared to their 4 year old PSP!

I think that they're trying to lure current PSP owners to shift towards PSPGO but they probably figure out that none of those peope will be willing to fork out $250 on a new PSP, so it'll be probably more profitable for them just basically after a new Audience, the ones who currently don't own a PSP.

That makes sense. I, for one, never had a PSP and now tempted to get one. I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer and probably won't spend a lot of time on the PSP, but having a small gaming device is quite useful from time to time. The itouch casual games wasn't enough to justify a purchase, but now the PSP is different, on top of those minis, there're also must-have big gaming titles that I can commit to.

I dont own God of War 1,2.I'll pick it up on blu ray,but hell no I wont rebuy ps2 games for ps3.likewise,I have a psp2000,Hell No. .i wont rebuy digital games I own.youre making the psp Go a FAIL by not fixing the problem,sony.

Terrible move by Sony. I'm a self-proclaimed Sony Fanboy, and this is just absurd. This thing is doomed before it's even released.

Even MORE troubling is this line from a similar article on Gamespot:

" As for future games, SCEA hardware marketing director John Koller told GameSpot that after October 1, his company will try to make as many new UMD releases available on the PlayStation Store.

Gran Turismo will be available for the PSP Go on day one.

"We can't say 'all' because there are legal restrictions in converting some titles to digital, but on the whole, we expect a substantial amount," explained Koller. " "

So not only is there no UMD conversion program, but now Sony is coming out and saying that not every future release will even be available in the PSN store. Just AWFUL.

Haha, fair enough. I guess I just wanted full disclosure in that i've been a Sony-only kind of guy since about '97.

But I suppose the title of "fanboy" requires blind faith even in the face of flaws. And the PSPGO is such a flaw.

Actually that's the best kind of "fanboy", one who complains because he see's a legit flaw and hopes his preferred brand will fix it, if not this time at least with their next product, you unfortunately only care about defending a brand so everything looks 'teh pretty for the lame console war. Sad. Sigh, ignore.

Can you blame Sony for not making it easy to pirate their games, at my local game store they still rent psp games, if there was a conversion method people would just rent and rip.

With this logic, you've pretty much ignored about 1000 ideas that people have had in the past few months regarding how to make such a program successful. There are PLENTY of ways to do this, and they would almost HAVE to involve sacrificing the UMD to Sony.

You TRADE-IN the UMD, and get a digital copy. You don't just get a digital for HAVING the UMD; you lose it. And hence, you cannot just return it (rent).

I'm not gonna rehash the ways this could work--that takes too long. For a good example, you could mimic the UMD trade-in after EA's instrument trade-in for Rock Band instruments that stop working.

But since Sony doesn't seem like working with their fans here, this doesn't seem to be happening.

Except, then Sony have a ton of UMDs back in their warehouses that they can't do anything with, even though they're in working order. What should they do? Take them to Gamestop?

Face it, it was a pipe dream to think there was any conversion plans in place. I could have told you from day 1 it wasn't feasible. Fact is, if you have UMDs, you have a PSP and, thus, have access to both UMDs and the downloadable games (full and minis), so upgrading is completely optional. The fact Sony is giving away 3 downloads is more than they need to do.

Well, that's fine. If Sony doesn't want to load up warehouses full of UMDs, that's their business.

But now instead of UMDs, their warehouses will be filled up with all the PSP Gos that no one will buy.

And btw, the "giving away 3 downloads" is for Europe only. America is getting nothing whatsoever.

Ya know...I was very interested in this product until recently. I don't even have a huge library of PSP games (like 5) but it just doesn't make sense. You can buy a 16GB memory stick with the money you save from the difference in price between the PSPgo and the 3000.

It is not like the PSP-3000 is super-bulky...it is quite slim and portable itself. I just don't understand Sony sometimes.

Luckily they are finally getting their act together with the PS3 :)

I have a psp 1000 that works great. Plays all the games fine. Still looks amazing. sony should not have gone all digital until the next gen handheld. which should be the same step up as game boy advance to psp was.

Wasn't there another story on here that said they weren't planning it now, but it could come later on? I don't know if Gamespot got all the facts correct here.

It looks like they WANT to do it, but whoever is being a douchebag about things isn't going to let them. I wonder where the licensing issues are coming from exactly.

It's really too bad – the PSP Go has a lot of strikes against it already.

I'd like to see it do well since it'll benefit UMD PSP owners – hopefully there will be a lot of games that are hard to find on UMD in the 225 they're releasing October 1.

there was a story on n4g a few weeks ago on another playstation system well hear about after psp gos release. Hopefully it will be a good upgrade of the psp 3000 with 16 gb of system memory
