No Linux on PS3 Revisited

When the PS3 was launched Sony included support for what was called The Open Platform. The Open Platform supported the ability to launch a Linux bootloader via what was called the Other Os from the XMB. Although the Hypervisor (GameOS) prevented full access to the system components when the Linux OS made a hardware call (i.e. such as the Reality Synthesizer) , it did allow access to the Cell Broadband Engine and 7 of the 9 processing elements being made available for use (1 reserved for system use, 1 is disabled) which for the technology involved was unheard of at the price point.

i wonder why they did this.

but anyway, i think the cost cutting has to do with majority.
like BC, Linux was probably not used by the majority of owners

or maybe it has to do with security or piracy or something

Sarick6096d ago (Edited 6096d ago )

The only other thing I see would is it being a conflict of interest undermining the lower price. We all know that Sony is losing money off console sales while that loss is to be recovered from software sales.

On that note people who would buy clusters solely as a cheap academic supercomputers aren't benefiting Sony. These consoles sold at a loss won't earn that money back if used as clusters. With the $299 PS3 slim having this feature cluster alternatives would be even more widespread.

My point is Sony is made these newer units cheap so people would buy them to play games or buy services. If these units aren't being used in a way that is profitable it's not targeting the right audience. IMHO, By removing this feature it helps insure these cheap slim units are bought by real customers not conservative scientist.

Saaking6096d ago

Seriously, who cares? it wasn't even one of the major features.

meepmoopmeep6096d ago

yeah, like i said it's probably taken away because of majority.

it's great for the science/gov institutions though

Wiitactics6096d ago

Why is that the PS3 has one SPE disabled? If anybody cares to explain? Please!

Maybe they will activate it in the future with some FW update for games that require it? Like they did with God of War Chain of Olympus on the PSP...

Finalfantasykid6096d ago

It is supposed to yield better bus performance since there will be less information going there at once. This eliminates a possible bottleneck.

krouse936096d ago

So what would happen if it caused a bottle neck?

Would it possibly hinder performance if the coding or engine was written wrong?

Finalfantasykid6096d ago

Ya, assuming I am actually right about what I said...

Suppose if the PS3 allowed development on all 7 SPEs(1 would still be reserved for the OS), then if all 7 SPEs were being used fully, then there would be lots of traffic on the fsb, which would cause a backup for the cpu and memory and probably the rsx as well. This might cause frequent frame rate drops. So using only 6 SPEs, would reduce this problem.

But like I said, I am not entirely sure on the accuracy of my above comment...

GrandTheftZamboni6096d ago

That way Sony can use a processor that has a defect in one of the SPEs thus keeping the cost down. CELL processors used in IBM's supercomputers have all SPEs enabled, but they cost more.

My Grasp On this article is that is somehow someone finds a way to use Linux or an OtherOS on the PS3 Slim it will be hypervisor proof because there are no drivers for any sort of hypervisor on teh PS3 slim because Sony wanted to save money on developing new drivers for all the future hardware changes.

So I figure in a years time people will have hacked linux to run on PS3 slims with all 9 cores of the Cell CPU running in Linux with access to the RSX Graphics Processor.

If this happens we could have a huge homebrew community for PS3.

Unless somewhere Sony has already thought of this and put other provisions in place besides not openly allowing you to install Linux.

Finalfantasykid6096d ago

http://www.guardian.co.uk/t...

ah yes you are correct. Ignore my previous posts :P

krouse936096d ago

Oh So if there are no defects in the Cell/Be Processor in your PS3 and you know enough about coding and writing engines etc etc.. could you effectively hack past the hyper-visors set in Place and use all 8 SPE's and the one PPE for programing/research etc..

GrandTheftZamboni6096d ago (Edited 6096d ago )

You would at least need to physically modify PS3 internals before doing that. I would imagine that disabling an SPE is probably done in the CELL itself.

@Finalfantasykid
Very nice article.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle19d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde25d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy26d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
