Microsoft: Firefox's Billion Claim is 'interesting math'

A senior Microsoft executive has called into question the claim by rival web browser Firefox that it has been downloaded a billion times.

Amy Barzdukas, a general manager at Microsoft in charge of the company's Internet Explorer browser, said that the recent announcement that Firefox has reached a billion downloads was "interesting math".

"As with any marketing statement, I'd encourage people to be somewhat sceptical about large number claims," she said.

If a tenth of the internet population downloaded 7 versions each it would pass way over a billion. The most interesting math I've seen in a while was the 360 program for finding the bottom of an avatar's shoe.

Kushan6120d ago

I realise you're trolling, but the ironic thing is that that would actually be rather interesting.
You try calculating the position of an object in 3D space from two cameras.

heroicjanitor6120d ago (Edited 6120d ago )

It's called a joke. I just thought of the program and how it was trying to find it and was wrong for a while and realised it's mistake, well it was funny in my head. I used a microsoft one because microsoft were spreading FUD, I could say something about Sony if it makes you feel any better... Although you have a right to be suspicious on this site. I think I could give a rough estimate of it's position by the way, since I'm majoring in mathematical physics.

i was hoping for a comment about how microsoft uses "interesting math" to calculate how many 360's it sold.

It seems perfectly reasonable to me, some people run more than one web browser on a single pc anyways, especially since IE can't be deleted from XP.
Just cause they lie about numbers means that we should assume their competitions does as well is hardly a reason for us to be skeptical.
BTW, I've downloaded Firefox about 4 times now, the most recent time was today about an hour ago because my new laptop came in the mail

Windows pcs crash and burn all the time for any number of reasons (owner/manufacturer/program related) so to assume that people don't re-download the same application or even update to newer version of that app is an imbecilic thought at best.

Well I have failed in trying to get any of my mates to switch to FF. I guess I would make a bad salesman but they just say IE is fine for them.

Nitrowolf26120d ago

yes it does, at first it rocked but then after a while it started to slow down (even after i delte cookies, case, ects)

Sprudling6120d ago

IE7 alone is not good enough imo, but with the IE7Pro addon it is indeed just fine.

KRUSSIDULL6120d ago

Can anyone tell me why it sucks?

ultimolu6120d ago

It does. I'll stick with Opera/Firefox for the time being. I hated that browser from since high school.

Can't wait to hear what they have to say about Chrome OS. Tsunami PR spin/downplay on the way.

Narutone666120d ago

number, because that's what they have been doing with their products.

Kamikaze1356120d ago

People online are constantly saying that Firefox is the best browser, so people reading that are bound to downloaded it. I personally feel that it's the best browser online, but it has some issues that need to be worked on.

mantasis6120d ago

Firefox's add-ons turn me on, is there something wrong with me?

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing18d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9218d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit18d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing18d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9218d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
