Source Engine maxed out

PC Games Hardware tried to squeeze the last bit of visual quality out of Valve's aged Source Engine. As test objects they used Dark Messiah of Might & Magic (with LoD mod), Half-Life 2 (with Cinematic Mod 8.2/9/10), Left 4 Dead and Zeno clash.

Most screenshots are 1920 x 1200 pixels with highest settings.

on one too generations. Unless Valve are even bothered to step up and make a new engine, I couldn't give a damn what they crap out for the 360/PC.

Half Life went down hill since the start of 4 hours episodic releases.

Well it does have a... unique feel to it. You can tell that a game is a Valve game within the first minute. That is something that not many other engines can do (IMO), so Valve gets a big plus from me for that.

It's been maxed out. The Doom 3 engine looked better than Source when it was first released. Gabe Newell has just been too fat and lazy to do anything about it. You'll see four more versions of Left 4 Dead on it over the next four years.

Valve keeps using Source is because of all the moders in their fanbase. If Valve mad a new engine it would take time for the moders to get good with it. The only reason I still play Valve made games are for the mods, a lot of them are at a much higher quality than Valves work.

The other reason I think is that they just don't know how to. Iv seen much better work form moders than Valve recently (IMHO).

I think Valve should just create a new engine for their games. Like a "Source Engine 2" perhaps... The current source engine has been used for YEARS and I am sad to say that yes, most of the games are starting to look very outdated. But don't get me wrong, it's a very good engine, but Valve has to try something new..

They are. Half Life 3 is rumoured to be the first game to use their new engine. Be a while yet though, again another rumour, but 2011.

Still at least the source engine offers those with low spec PCs a good gaming experience. Plus the solid mod support.

Source debuted with Half-Life 2 and from what they've said in the past Source2 will debut with Half-Life 3

Edit: Valve have released HL2 episodes every 2 years or so. We will likely see the final HL2 episode next year and I'm guessing it'll be another few years after that before we see HL3 with the new Source engine.

Half-Life 3 isn't even in development yet.

So don't expect Source 2 untill 2011 at the earliest. But Source gives you exiting and fun FPS at W.O.W. specs, but can look preatty good on good PC's. How can you not love that?!?!

Its a great engine.

and L4D makes a LOT of fun to play online, although it dont looks that good.

Iam sure we will se a new engine on half-Life3 exclusiv to 360/ GAmes for Windows.

Not really...

TF2 is beautiful. Episode 2 looks fantastic, and L4D's art style was supposed to be dark and gritty. On a technical level, L4D is right up there with all the graphic power houses. L4D looks a hell of a lot better than games like COD4 and WAW.

Not to mention the Source engine still has one of (if not) the most realistic physics system in a game.

Sure, the games don't look that amazing, but keep in mind that a lot of it comes down to artistic ability. The game pushes high poly counts, dynamic lighting, and physics. You can take that and do anything with it. It just needs some more creative minds applied to it.
Basing the potential of an engine by using old games doesn't prove anything.
I agree that it needs to be updated, maybe with better bump mapping and things, but it's ok for now.

Despite it's age, Source Engine can still keep up with many new engines. It still rivals the Unreal Engine 3 in my opinion. It's a technical achievement and the only reason Valve doesn't upgrade now is because community modders work with it all the time. I'm getting tired of people calling Gabe fat and making fun of him. I did it once or twice but I got sick of it. The guy is talented and his physical appearance has absolutely nothing to do with his quality of work. You PS3 fanboys are just haters. Gabe has a certain principle and that is that he doesn't like working with unnecessarily complicated hardware. Sony deliberately made the PS3 harder to work with because they wanted developers to abandon work on the 360 so they could learn how to work with the PS3 (Sony thought the PS3 would sell like the PS2). As great as the PS3 hardware is, Gabe refuses to waste his time with it. And I can respect him on that position.

So if can keep up with new engines why do alot of their games look so dated, vs games made with newer engines, it's an old engine that is well past it's prime, the games will look okay but thats it. I doubt it could keep up with u3 engine, let alone ubisofts, capcom or konami's engines, considering its age. It very mod friendly and it's well known, thats all it's got going for it.

And you think sony made the ps3 intentional hard to code, just so devs would abandon developing on the 360, to learn to code for the ps3. When the ps2 was released it also was difficult to code for, its amazing that it's successor is designed on a similar philosophy and you wonder why you get smart ass replys, with statements like that.

And yet countless other devs have been able to get the complicated hardware to work just fine, and 1st party devs have stole the show with some of their games.

Let me correct your last part, gabe refuses to adapt to a new way of coding due to complacency, and is happy to continue to use a method of programming that will eventually be replaced with newer and better methods.

Um, have you seen their games on PC, dude? The HDR effects in Half-Life 2, a game made in 2004, rival anything done using the Unreal Engine 3. Don't look to the console ports. Look at the PC. Also, engines like UE3 and the Scimitar/Anvil Engine and the RAGE engine by Rockstar still don't match up to what the Source engine can do. Unreal Engine 3 still using static lighting effects, so I don't know what you're talking about.
