"Sony is up to something. DigiTimes recently revealed that the console maker “placed significant orders for key Sony PS3 components” from Taiwan-based IC distributors. In this case, “significant” equates to enough parts for producing a million PlayStation 3s for the third quarter.

According to the IC distributors, the recent orders are about double the average that Sony ordered during the second quarter. What does this mean? A couple of possibilities come to mind:

* Sony is expecting to sell more PlayStation 3s later this year—much more than what it’s currently selling. This larger order for PS3 components could mean a price drop for Sony’s existing PS3 models.
* This increase in orders could also mean that Sony is manufacturing a new PS3. You know, a PS3 Slim.

So which is it? This is a sign that Sony is making a PS3 Slim or is it going to be a price cut for the existing PS3 models? Start speculations NOW!"

Sales havent suddenly increased, so unless they managed to get some deal on the components (unlikely) they're predicting a sudden influx of sales, which would suggest... well, what ever is expecting.

Ever thought Sony just gets a better deal buying more componnets, just like out, bulk price is cheaper. Hence why they are ramping up production, as well as the looming holiday season. Time to stock pile.

Hmm, ok. I've been looking up some stats over the last couple of days there seems to be a large increase in sales leading upto December 25th... maybe that#s it. I'm not expert but just saying.

It could possibly mean that there's some sort of major shopping season on the way. I know it sounds Crazy, but imagine if like...a third of all spending was done at one particular time of the year. Like near the end of the year, everyone went out and spent loads of money for some reason. Imagine that.

they are buying chips n parts at record low prices...many IC and part manufacturers are running on idle and giving good prices....put that in tandem with Sony knowing they have a rock solid product...no brainer

Ok see this: these components are so cheap, they will break alot. They want to sale more console, no matter the quality. So the extra is the replacing parts. They adopt a RROD strategy, if MS sell more even with RROD why not doing something cheap too.

It sound weird no? Sony was know to be so top quality? We will see.

Everything is smaller so making the parts is cheaper for Sony and it ends up with a price cut which is good for the buyers. It would be stupid if they had the internal chipset being the size of a peanut and the outer plastic casing being the size of the original launch 60GB because they would be wasting plastic if you get what I mean hence why they Slim down their consoles.

PS3 is still more reliable than 360 will ever be.

I have a 60Gb(upgraded 320Gb), UK launch model. Never failed once. Yet I know friends with 360's that have returned the 360 2-5 times.

Sony will never come close to Microsofts record of 68% failure rate.

If there really is a price cut coming via slim then sony should push GT5 Devs for bundle release because those two together could single handedly cut their total sales they are behind the 360 in half at least.

We really won't know what for until the day it happens. Even with all the leaks from Sony there are so many other "leaks" we won't be able to pull the gems from the garbage in time. Sheesh, just wait for it to happen guys. Good things come to people who wait.

Everyone know that Wii and Xbox owners is waitting for the sony to have a price cut for they can buy one some of them have it already and Wii owners are liking for a hardcore system because it's a kid game my daunghter have one. Xbox owners brought a Xbox because sony took to long to come out.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
