Developers ignore PS3 screenshot feature

In the PlayStation 3's 2.50 firmware update last year, Sony added the screenshot capture option, which would allow users to take direct feed screengrabs from their games. How many times have you wished that you could capture a priceless gaming moment on your console and share it with friends? Sony finally gave us hope that that would be possible with this feature last year, but nine months later, there isn't a single game that supports it; not even a PSN title!

Fake
MGS4, Nobi Noby Boy, Wipeout, and others have it.

Johnny Rotten6146d ago (Edited 6146d ago )

Linger in Shadows, and Wipeout do too. The Resistance games have it via through a keyboard as well.

rockleex6146d ago

An OS feature.

Make it work like Printscreen. No matter what you're doing on your PS3, you can capture your screen at any given time. ^_^

vickers5006146d ago

I'm pretty sure Battlefield: Bad Company does it too.

a_squirrel6146d ago

Battlfield Bad Company screen grab is on both versions of the game, and is not something that goes to the picture folder, it goes right to the website, and that's how you view it.

Sony said themselves that they weren't 'forcing' developers to add features, the features are something the developers CAN use, not have to

rockleex6146d ago (Edited 6146d ago )

That's the thing, Sony doesn't have to force the developers if its an OS feature.

If gamers can take pictures of anything at anytime on the PS3, then developers won't have to spend time to implement it. Everyone will be happy.

It should be pretty easy for Sony to do. Seeing as how anything that's going to be displayed on your screen has to go through the video card first, all they have to do is take that display information and save it into a photo format.

6wl6146d ago (Edited 6146d ago )

Ferrari Challenge (allows screenshots of the cars in the showroom) - along with custom XMB soundtracks. The psudo-sequel Supercar Challenge looks to support it too.

ATLRoAcH6145d ago

...both support in-game XMB screen capture. I'm sure there's others I don't know about. I wish it was used more. It works really well. I use it a lot in MLB 09.

BigPenguin6145d ago

flOw expansiOn allows it. I don't know how to actually make it do it, I just periodically have screenshots after a play session :P

FamilyGuy6145d ago (Edited 6145d ago )

Well I know of one thing that also uses this, Home

In the Infamous Space where you do Graffiti Art on the wall. It takes a screen grab of the picture you're looking at when you choose "keep photo". It's definitely a screen grab because the floating user comments and comments bar on the left can show up in your pictures.

It'd be great if EVERY dev added this function to their games, I love screen grabs and video grabs even more.

MazzingerZ6145d ago (Edited 6145d ago )

"there isn't a single game that supports it"

I understand you can miss other games but not the greatest game in a while and also the most innovative ever: MGS4 and LBP

Kojima had always the camera in the MGS series, but definitely both MGS4 and LBP uses the screenshot feature to take a screenshot (picture) export it to the HDD. I have some great MGS4 wallpapers thanks to that feature.

How many articles about PS3 are written about people that actually don't own one?

I see the point of the article, the feature should be there in every game but as long as SONY doesn't "force" them, only a few of them will include it.

people approving this need to get a PS3 as well

Blaze9296145d ago (Edited 6145d ago )

its simple. As long as developers have the option to "not do it" it will continue to be so and that's one thing I wish Sony would change, start making some of their features mandatory. They made trophies mandatory (or at least I thought so as till this day there are titles being released without them).

Custom tracks, in game screenshots hell, even freakin voice chat is STILL optional for developers. Microsoft built all this straight into the Xbox 360's OS and made it mandatory that ever game put on the 360 support those features. That's why its a so much better sense of connectivity between the 360, LIVE and it's games...ALL of them.

the screenshot feature announcement kicked ass and sad to see that it really isnt even being used yet alone not many even know about it. Nine months though, that's a long time with such results.

Raoh6145d ago

rockleex is 100% correct. Sony always leaves it up to the developer. in some cases this is great, cause it gives the developer a lot of creative freedom. but when we are talking about certain features, it should either be OS embedded or an easy code/tool that should be pushed on to the developers.

PirateThom6145d ago

It may also be a problem that developers don't want their games to be seen in their frozen form, it shows up a lot of issues like jaggies, textures and so on, you wouldn't get in motion.

capturing a headshot in kz2 and set it as wallpaper, how bad@ss is that

hope games use this

SevWolf6146d ago

That would be awesome, better yet, imagine that moment in MGS4 where you're camouflaged on the floor and the PMC soldier is right there in front of you, or you sneaking up behind him...ahh memories

MaN_uTd6146d ago

You can in MGS4, By using the camera.

shadow27976145d ago

It's true, I did it tonight, in fact. Shot a soldier with a laughing round and took a picture as he shot his very surprised friend. Haha. Oh that was a great way to unwind from the stress of a Big Boss Emblem attempt.

And yes, I set it as my wallpaper. =)

Nitrowolf26146d ago

i feel that this and in-game music have both been ignore. I mean its been out since the begining of the year right? i could only find a few retail games and the only one was KZ2. Idk allot of people who whining about this and yet here it is a few game support it. i know allot of psn games do but i would want this feature implemented in most retail games (at least the online, or offline mult part of it)
i would also like screenshot in more games, i play allot of games and some moments i like the keep.

LarVanian6146d ago

Motorstorm: PR has custom soundtracks.
GTAIV and Wipeout HD are two games which should have custom soundtracks.

Johnny Rotten6146d ago (Edited 6146d ago )

wipeout has custom soundtracks.

Nitrowolf26146d ago

idk, but do those game have in-game xmb music though? i know that they are the same thing but still. burnout also have custom soundtrack.

Polluted6146d ago

Johnny's right. Wipeout does have custom soundtracks. It's really well implemented too. When you go through a tunnel or something the music sort of echos.

Warhawk was another one. I see what you mean, though. Every game should at least have the option to use it. Sony should just step up and make it mandatory.

ShinMaster6146d ago (Edited 6146d ago )

Street Fighter IV has custom music?!?!?!

Redempteur6146d ago

GTA 4 has custom coundtracks ? sorry but where .. in the previous games this was in the radio but it seems i missed it in this one .

and where does street 4 have custom music ..i'm sorry again but where ??

i' m user of custom music in both wipeout hd and burnout paradise ..so please help me ...

-EvoAnubis-6146d ago

This is a list of all the known games that have custom soundtracks on the PS3. I've split them into those that do XMB soundtracks, and those that have their own way of doing it. You may want to bookmark it, as it's always being updated.

http://boardsus.playstation...

tatical6145d ago

Street Fighter IV has custom soundtracks, but not when you play online - local matches only. Just go to XMB and play your music.

Redempteur6145d ago

Thanks evo anubis for the link .. i didn't know about killzone 2 ( nor sonic unleashed )

NotSoSilentBob6145d ago

So someone disagrees with facts when I say that SFIV has Custom music? Go to any game store and look at the back of the box. Its says in the upper corner In-game Music.

KR1ST0F3R6146d ago

Sure call of juarez does it

I bet the reason most don't implement it is because it will get used to take screen shots of glitches and make the game look bad

Qdog6144d ago

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, does have an XMB screen-shot function, but it happens to be useless unless you like taking pics of the pause screen. Seriously I'm playing the game, I hit the home button, and it pauses the game to bring up the XMB, I select the screenshot function, and it closes the XMB to bring up the game's pause screen and only the option to press X to capture. So really it is useless, and I'm sure that was added in, simply because they were using the new SDK.

ApocalypseShadow6146d ago

the games are getting better looking, the player counts online are getting larger, the DLC is adding to the games, and the quality of exclusives has improved tremendously since launch.

nice to have, but i have no complaints about this feature.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle24d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde31d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga32d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199232d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga32d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman31d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

blacktiger32d ago

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box32d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion31d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7232d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7532d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit32d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14932d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7732d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
