Peter Moore on Backwards Compatibility

According to Peter Moore, Corporate Vice President of the Interactive Entertainment Business in the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft, backwards compatibility is not a top priority and its support may soon come to an end. Speaking to Kikizo, Moore said:

that prooves my theory that the consumer is screwed by buying ms consoles. people who bought the first xbox should be angry. in 2 years ms surely announces another xbox. the consumer has to buy each your this crap. i dont like ms and its monopolistic idealogie.

First off, Moore didn't say this was the end of bc games, there are more coming. What he said was that they were beginning to taper off.

And I'm okay with that. There's a few games out there that still need to be bc, but most of the most popular ones already are. And aside from Halo, I haven't touched earlier Xbox games.

I look at it like a system of limited resources. I would rather those limited resources not be applied towards bc, but rather focus on adding features to Live and getting the occassional patch out the door quicker.

Capt CHAOS7226d ago

He clearly stated that they had over delivered and met their promise. What rubbish. The only games of mine that worked on the 360 were Halo and Halo2, as a result, I had to get rid of some great games. I mean that fact that even Top Spin didn't work was crazy. That's an MS title..

schnodder7227d ago

i don't buy a next-gen system to play my last-gen games - except halo 1+2

kingboy7227d ago

lol like ur cd player don`t play first gen cd`s ..whatever..lame consle can`t even play an xbug game ...please u can`t back this up like it doesn`t hurt

Moostache7227d ago

BC is a non-starter for me.

My PS2 was NEVER used to play PS1 games and my XB360 has been used extremely rarely to play XB1 games.

If someone really wants to play the old games they have, then stop being a cheap ass and don't sell your old system. Problem solved. You play new games on the new consoles and keep the old consoles if you wish to still play old games. The whole idea of EXPECTING to be able to sell off your old console and still play all the games is assinine.

Seriously, if you have a bunch of old games then it is obvious you have owned the old system. Those games still work perfectly fine ON THE SYSTEM THEY WERE MADE FOR!!!!! Want to play them still? The guess what? You CAN - just keep your old system and play away....

Personally, I resent every single hour of development time talen away from next-gen game development when it gets spent on programming code for BC. A HUGE waste of time.

I used to buy cheap games thinking I’d play them later, but I always ended up returning to my favorites. Now I skip the deals unless I know I’ll play the game soon.

Lionsguard1d 2h ago

This is very true, my nephews grew up on these two games and whenever I introduce them a AAA game whether old or new, it's like seeing an alien try to make sense of it and then quickly lose interest in it.

Can’t really expect a 8 year old Roblox kid to go buy resident evil 9 lol

CrimsonWing6922h ago

Gaming trends are so weird to me now. Like, I’m old school and games were consumed essentially how movies were. You play through a title and look forward to the sequel or other things that came out. Now, that is so not the norm.

Research shows over 90% of gamers find playing with AI-powered NPCs to be "enjoyable and rewarding"

"Players kick back at AI that is taking away from creativity. But when AI is used to power totally new types of interactive experience, then it’s a very different story"

The study comprised 68 people.

31 male, 31 female, seven non-binary.

yes, it's in the article.

Seven non binary. Someone with no balls?

Well Microsoft is about to blow people shoes off. AI is apparently something they have poured funds into over the last few years which has them sitting at the top of AI Olympus. It’s even a part of the military drones I think. If AI takes over, Microsoft will be ready. For better or worse.

DarXyde1d 12h ago

Doubt it. While I've also thought NPC interactions could be fantastic with genAI and literally adopt unique personas, quite a few of today's gamers are Gen Z, and I don't think they're too keen on AI, especially as they're graduating into a market where entry level jobs don't exist anymore.

As a semi-elder millennial, I tend to like Gen Z because they stand on business more than my generation. Do I think they would actively boycott and push the data centers out of their towns and such? Absolutely.

Deathdeliverer20h ago

Well I can’t blame them. As a Gen Xer, I prefer people being hired and AI being a limited support strut than the job replacer that it is. Work is hard to find for SEVERAL reasons in SEVERAL industries. There are less entry level jobs in every field. I feel people have argued about people from other countries taking their jobs while supporting systems that give NOBODY the job, but saves these companies money.
People make the mistake of thinking you agree with something because you bring it up. I simply said Microsoft is pouring funds into AI so they should be reasonably ahead in that aspect. I’ll always prefer the human element in totality whenever possible.

ApexLanding231d 21h ago

Well if a study of 68 people say so than it must be true.

DarXyde1d 12h ago

It's more of a failure of games media not understanding research than a research institution making such a sweeping statement with a limited sample size and no indication of ages, background etc. Study was conducted by a university collaborating with a developer, and, as a researcher myself, I take serious issue with academics doing research because they tend to publish from convenience samples at universities offering course credit for their participation (so really, who is this data supposed to generalize to?).

But the 90% claim is just silly.
