How difficult should games be?

Gamer Limit writes: "Difficulty in games has always been a reasonably contentious issue amongst gamers. Many would be quick to cry foul, exclaiming with much anger and remorse that games have become too easy, filtered and stripped to fit the time and attention spare mainstream gamer.

While others, probably more likely to be a little bit more balanced, would generally say that game difficulty has become less of an issue - as titles become more focused on multiplayer, and developers start to play around with multiple difficulty modes and scenarios.

But that leads to my question - How difficult should the average game be?"

Games are way too easy nowadays. Some titles try and break the mold, like Ninja Gaiden or Demon's Souls, but most just resort to fake difficulty or shoddy programming.

Blaze9296203d ago

As long as the games dont resort to "cheap" difficulties then it's cool. But games like Ninja Gaiden is just cheap and ridiculous and when you get to the point where it seems impossible to play the game, that's when the line has been crossed.

mastiffchild6203d ago

It only annoys me when they make things harder just by making save points/checkpoints miles apart-that just increases play through frustration and is as cheap as you'll get in my book.
Usually as long as easy means easy and normal gives some challenge on a genre you aren't great at and hard is what it says it is then I'm happy.

Daft difficulty spikes can pi55 people off as well. I didn't notice but a couple of my mates(who don't really play too many FPS) found the end of KZ2 a bit tricky(just clearing the last room and killing Radec IIRC)compared to the rest of the game. Then again I found DMC3 pretty easy and can't finish SMG without help from my six year old!

Imo game dificulties nowdays is pretty good. Altough many lack challenge and tend to be really easy even in hard mode.

There are many types of ppl, some ppl can retry a section in game for weeks, and some ppl well go and sell the game if they cant beat the 1st boss after 2 tries. So Imo its good to have the "casual" very easy where its nearly imbossible to die, while still providing the HC audience with nightmarish dificulties.

chrisjc6203d ago

Ninja Gaiden wasn't cheap in any way. Unless it was Master Ninja, you can just grind yellow orbs to get max weapons and items.

Everybody has a different comfort level with difficulty. Which is why I love adjustable sliders like the one in Oblivion.

Choose your difficulty instead of having to measure up to a pre-set expectation; and that leaves the devs free to focus on making a great game without having to worry about hamstringing it.

Elimin86203d ago

I think that difficulty is a perfect balance. It could just be me though.

DeadlyFire6203d ago

Indeed. They just throw some cheap alternatives in the game to make things harder. They don't increase AI's ability to do anything in most games that is why AI and bots act retarded in most games. A few games have some good AI, but not very many. Mostly its just alternatives, but increasing the damage they do to you, moving save points further away, or lowering your health bar, or by adding few more dumb enemies.

Games shouldn't be overly frustrating, or exceedingly easy to beat.

Elimin86203d ago

I was thinking that not too long ago. Telling my friends how they took the F from Fun and put it into FRUSTRATION. They need to reverse that.

Checkpoints make all games easy these days. There isn't one game this gen I haven't completed because it was too hard.

I can beat any PS3/360/Wii game you throw at me.

But if I were to recall the hardest game I've played this gen, it would have to be GT5P and MGS4. It took me quite a while to beat the S class mode in GT5P. As for MGS4, it was torture playing it on Big Boss. LOL.

George Sears6203d ago

Big Boss extreme is nothing compared to European Extreme, and even that MGS isn't really a hard series to pass. Challenging on more difficult settings, but not impossible like other games.

xxBATTLECATxx6203d ago

i thought Wipeout HD was impossible when i first got it, i quit it for a looooong time

ShabzS6203d ago

i mean in the end you really wanna enjoy the experience and not bang your head against the wall... i know some go in it for the challenge of things but isnt that what multiplayer is for?... not tooo tuff... and not tooo easy...

jack who6203d ago

play all my games on the hardest, anything lower is a waste of time

Mr Fancy Pants6203d ago

Me too and still they are too easy...

spandexxking6203d ago

yeah me too, i usually play two games at once on their hardest difficulty because i'm just that good! -_-
