I too love a good sequel.

Without sequels, no KOTOR II, Gears 2, KZ2, MGS 2-4 (and Portable Ops), no more GTA games.

Great article. It would be sad to see a lot of sequels go, but we'd most likely get more original games. Imagine if instead of Ninja Gaiden 2 we got a re-worked Ninja game with Ayane. It would have felt more fresh.

Def. agree. I don't know about you guys but back in the day I remember being glad that Crash Bandicoot 2, Twisted Metal 2, Resident Evil 2 & Tekken 2 were released to name a few. H*ll even 2xtreme was better than the first. That was so long ago haha.

Uncharted 2
God of War 2 & 3
Halo 2 & 3

That's what I gathered from the article. The writing made it seem like "banned" is a joke; and that a lot of sequels are in fact good.

Just GTFO! CoD4, MGS4, Resistance 2, Gears of War 2, Half-Life 2, or Halo 2. All of those were better than the originals, sure some sequels suck but COME ON! Those are shinning examples about how to evolve the game and improve already great mechanics.

and the point of the article, i think, is to make us realize that we're missing out on potentially great new ideas and IPs because companies know the money is in making sequels.

sequels aren't necessarily a bad thing, but they are becoming too much of the focus.

I recently made 500 game ideas, and deleted 476, in a 2 WEEK marathon, of course they're web game ideas i'm a flash game developer.
my point is you can make a good game idea every week you just need to be creative.

Sequels souldn't be banned, that's just ridicolous.

If Video Game sequels should be banned, then I guess this guy thinks Movie Sequels should be banned too? I don't know about anyone else, but I'm looking forward to the sequels Transformers Revenge of the Fallen, Terminator Salvation and a bunch of other movie sequels.

It takes a LOT of money and time too invest in a Brand new IP... if there were no sequels to video games at all, more than likely there would be only a handful of games released every year.

Just look at Team ICO for an example... to this day they haven't made a single sequel yet, but since 2001, they've only released 2 games. Developing new games that aren't sequels takes a TON of time and I don't think this guy realizes it.

imo, some games are made to have sequels, others not...

look at Uncharted for example, Nathan is a treasure hunter, he lives many adventures, that's obvious. The game is awesome and as there is room for many improvements, it's perfectly logical.

On the other hand, let's take Okami or Bioshock, those are great games too, but do they need sequels ? Not sure... Unfortunately, it's only business that drives sequels development. Okami would have had one if the first game had been succesfull. Bioshock will have one and I must say I'm quite afraid

What a tool. Like anything in life, it's about BALANCE. I'm sorry, but gaming would NOT be better off without MGS, Pokemon, Halo, and Mario sequels. A quality sequel can be just as innovative and original as a new IP. Sequels do not stifle creativity any more than new IPs do.

Super Metroid
Super Mario World
GTA: San Andreas
Castlevania SoTN
Metal Gear 4
Baldur's Gate II
COD 4
Street Fighter 2, 3 and 4
Diablo 2 (III should be banned...rofl )
Final Fantasy VII
Mortal Kombat II
Resident Evil 4
Saints Row 2
Ninja Gaiden II (NES)
Tekken 3
Tony Hawk 2
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
..And others I surely forgot...

Yeah... these games are in NO WAY some of the best games I have ever played or remembered. I don't believe they helped shaped some of the games we play. None of these have some of the most memorable story lines. None of them were so fun to keep me up for hours on end. None of them were the example on the way a system should work or how a game should be played. None of them have a fan following for a good reason.

I understand what he is trying to get at, but he fails.

Perhaps we should be given different electric outlets in each state since the standardization of the electrical outlet has prevented a better one from being invented?

In that case... perhaps there should be 20,0000 computer OS to choose from rather than a few.

Innovation and creativity is great, but I think the article is pessimistic, stupid and also short sighted.

Gamers wont buy sh*t just because it has the number 3 at the end.

Good developers usually know to quit.
And if they are raking in the cash, have fun trying to convince them to stop "Halo 5" or "Resident Evil 7", hell even "Final Fantasy" has a crapload of sequals to boot.

Truth is, if the original game had flaws, the sequel allows the developer to work on it, and improve their game.

Sequels are good. And necessary.
Period.

We must not have alot of good developers then. Games like Grim Fandango, Psychonauts, and Killer 7 are all superior to 75%+ of the sequels released these days. Gamers get so much of the same nowadays they completely ignore anything that isn't *insert game name here and add a number on the end*, and I know Killer 7 has 7 at the end.

There are many stories to be told within the Halo Universe & they are getting to it. Halo Wars & Halo 3:ODST is the start, I cant wait!

Just think of the games we'd miss since Donkey Kong in 1982.

First off it's not "my" site. Secondly I can see why you only have one bubble. I love how you picked out Halo, truth be told I love getting you Halo fanboys all riled up because you defend it so strongly, even though deep down you know it's not that revolutionary.

Seeing as you picked out Halo, and the display picture is one of Master Chief, I am going to assume you didn't read the article, and only look at the pretty pictures to make your assumption you illiterate moron.

No sequels ??? Are ya kidding me ? You mean no Resident Evil 2, God of War 2, Halo 2, Gears of War 2. No Final Fantasy 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11, oh you get the idea. Sometimes developers don't hit there stride in an ip until the second or even third outing. I couldn't imagine gaming WITHOUT sequels...

Actually, not only did I read the article in its' entirety but was actually able to comprehend its content. And despite the fact that the author contradicted himself on several points, the gist of the article was that game developers should be concentrating on new ips rather than revisiting existing games. My inclusion of the Final Fantasy series in my comment was to point out that although they are all different, they ARE sequels, even though the author seems to see it differently.

PS: I can also walk and chew gum at the same time. Go figure ;)

It depends on the game. Games like MGS, Resident Evil and Xenosaga, it's appropriate to have a sequel to tell the story. It would be pretty boring if the sequel remains the same like the writer puts it: same gameplay, a few new things and updated graphics. That's why I appreciated Resident Evil 4 and Persona 3. They changed the series. Sequels need to change it up to make it interesting.

FFX-2, let's face it. This should of never been made. FFX was epic by itself. The story is great and had a nice conclusion. Why ruin it with this POS FFX-2? Same with KH2. The ending is great, and I don't think there should be a sequel for that game.

3 comments people have above on how "the poster praises Final Fantasy in the article", and you still post "the writer says no Final Fantasy?"

Also, LOTR was a book trilogy before it was a movie. Books tend to be a bit different in that they need to spent a great deal of time describing events to you, and that wouldn't be feasible in one book (tome). Of course they needed to make LOTR 2 and 3 into movies; it was an established trilogy. Comparing books to video games doesn't make sense.
