I'm not sure what you're trying to get at here, but normally people think of better graphics with next-gen consoles because of their being made in a new era. Newer techonology normally means better and smoother graphics, and is generally expected.

GWAVE6261d ago (Edited 6261d ago )

To me, "next-gen" boils down to an expansion of core concepts in a game. Graphics are part of that, but physics, AI, enemies-per-screen, and draw distances are more important.

Take -- for example -- the original Metal Gear Solid. The game was popular for a reason. It wasn't just the pretty graphics. It was the new approach to game storytelling. It was the new approach to the action-adventure genre. It was the new approach to camera angles and gameplay presentation.

Graphics are easy to compare between versions for one reason *cough*consolewarrrzz*cough*. Things like physics and enemies-per-screen are a bit less concrete, and are therefore ignored. I hate to bring it up, but that is why some people dismissed Resistance 2 in favor of Gears 2 because "teh grafix r SOOO OMG in Gears 2!!!" without realizing that R2 boasted better physics, bigger interactive environments, more fluid and fully-fledged online modes, and more enemies-per-screen (not flaming, just stating facts..if you wanna disagree, try to prove me wrong).

People would rather compare screenshots than actually sit down and compare the whole game.

Geez, you do a GREAT job of representing the fanbase of your console of choice. How have you not been sent to the Open Zone yet?

Next-gen isn't just about better graphics, it's about more processing power which allows for better games, i.e. a lot more interactivity. Physics is NOT graphics and yet you need better tech for better physics. Better physics allows for complex gameplay. Same thing can be said about Artificial Intelligence or amount of objects or effects on screen. They make the experience a whole lot better, and that's graphics aside.

above-->"most peoples minds" should be replaced with "moronic Xbox fanboys minds"

I like how the Xbox fanboys complain they are persecuted on this website... when you have foolish posters such as the above making statements just to incite flames. Oh the irony.

WOW I can feel the tension tonight....There has been a handful of bashing from each side in practically every news ive been into lol...

Of course graphics matter. It's like suggesting that we fail to evolve special effects and cinematography for movies, and revert to stop-motion monsters and smoke machines.

Most serious developers, even on the Wii, realize this (Dead Space Extraction and Muramasa are great examples of this). Initially, it is the visuals that immediately draw us into a game, involve us with the characters and drive the story forward. Now there are countless cases where visuals are the SOLE focus of the experience and the game-play/ story are deficient as a result. A great example of this would be Resident Evil 5. Just rented/ finished it a couple of days ago, and if it wasn't for the graphics, I never would have completed the game. What a juvenile, ridiculous, poorly voiced mess that was - "Die, you bastard! (how original, Sheeva, how very original).

Anyway, games like this are the equivalent of a blockbuster summer movie, all flash and no substance. But that's what they set out to achieve, so you can't fault them for that.

Whatever the software in question, graphics are as imperative to this medium (games) as images are to movies. Visuals will always matter, otherwise we'd be playing board-games or reading a book. And at this point, visuals SHOULD matter, they are the foundation of our industry. That's not to say that every game has to be 1080p and have 150 different mapped lights and high-res textures, just that each piece of software should be loving crafted in it's own style and within the limits of it's technology to create an engaging, visual, auditory, escapist experience.

And @ John Hendry Eden. Wow, what issues. I'm guessing that Kaz Hirai sodomized your mother and burned your house down or something. My sympathies (for your mental state).

companies like Nvidia and AMD (which owns ATi) will had been long gone! and there are no point for Intel to fight for gfx market with either of them! come on...what's the whole point of going next-gen if the gfx are not going up even a notch compared to the last? then...only PS1 or N64 matter because they were the 1st consoles to generalized 3D instead of the traditional 2D! (I know PC did 3D way earlier) but of course we as gamers don't want that and as consumer, we are willing to spend for the better technologies that offer better gfx and better gaming experiences. thus the transition to DC, PS2, XBOX, GC and then to PS3, 360 and Wii because people are going for better and they expect things to be better than the last! as for PC, powerfull GPU are released by the months and for what? it's clearly not only for processing power because every PC has a CPU for that!

Wii is somehow doing the odds by staying at last-gen standards (or just a little bit more) and not going HD but it gets recognitions for its revolutionary control but that's still an improvement compared to last and not that many cares because most people are clinging to PS3 and 360 for their HD gaming! but I still think many Wii gamers are more than delightfull if the Wii can do HD! come on...don't lie!

PC gamers will always brag about how PC is producing the best gfx of all and many devs are trying their best to pull the best out of PS3 and 360 for better gfx! so...is better gfx matters? HELL YEAH!

Microsoft Xbox 3606261d ago (Edited 6261d ago )

Well said badz149. These are just Wii fanboys crying because the Wii can't keep up with the competition on the visual department. They don't realize that while we're getting amazing graphics, we also have very interactive environments, better AI, and better physics. To tops things all off with incredible and memorable gameplay as well.

SL1M DADDY6260d ago

And with that typically comes better graphics. If a next gen system has similar hardware to the last gen then it is not next-gen, it is old-gen in a new shell. A new type of controller does not make a next-gen console. Every next-gen console has brought better graphics, better AI, better physics... All except for the Wii. The Wii brought us waggle and dilapidated graphics. Sorry, it fails the next -gen test IMHO.

Perhaps reading the article in full might give one a better understanding of what the article is "getting at here".

madpuppy6261d ago

about what the article is getting at.

Deeper stories, detailed engrossing environments, high quality sounds and 7 channel surround sound. they all need a powerful machine to produce. the PS3 and 360 (as well as a high end PC) provide a platform that can support these things, the Wii, for example, cannot, It was not made to. The Wii may have mature content games, EG: overkill, mad world. but, I would not consider them deep, engrossing, story based games. It just doesn't have the horsepower to pull it off.

Microsoft Xbox 3606261d ago (Edited 6261d ago )

All I sense from your site is jealousy. That's about it. Trust me if I was a Wii fanboy as well, I would cry out loud for better graphics too. And just to get things out of the way, I do own a Wii which I barely play on.

Dimitri6261d ago

I think you graphics dont matter then go back to PS1 now, if you are the kind of person that says that only gameplay matters.

Thats why we get more expensive console, since better and better hardware is put inside them to allow better visuals and physics in game.

XLiveGamer6261d ago (Edited 6261d ago )

Now when we look back in retrospect, should it come as any real surprise to us that when we think next-gen consoles that we automatically equate it with better graphics? Between the commercials and advertising hype and better graphics being the most significant change from one console generation to the next, we’ve practically >>> been trained <<< this response: Next-Gen = Better Graphics. And now 10 or 20 years later, >>> sadly it’s almost the only thing <<< we’ve come to demand from our new systems.

That is why you have a lot of shiity games with shock and awe graphics.

The most important thing in a videogame is the gameplay. That is why games like Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Final Fantasy 7, MGS, Ninja Gaiden, Halo and a few others have been so succesful.

Wiivolution Now6261d ago

I still play PS1 games! Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, among so many other classics. You completely prove my point. I don't go back to these games because of the graphics, it's the game play that draws me back in. Also, I never said that graphics were not important, only that they are not the most important element of a great game.

TreborRversed6261d ago

I do agree with you here, but for me, most of the time, the visual determine the rest of the package (i.e. prodcution values).
