Usually when I have quit a game or changed to a PS2 game.
About once during game play, since December.
I wouldn't say its an issue, its a wireless device.
Aside from not having rumble and being a little light b/c of it, I would say the controller works great.

Wow, that would be really annyoing. I hope Sony gets this issue ironed out.

FYI:
This is a known Bluetooth issue, considering SIXAXIS can only reconnect via the USB cable, and everyone knew this was going to happen from the moment controller's connection method was fully detailed. It's just how the setup works. There's no real "fix", unless Sony remakes the PS3 and controller to allow wireless reconnection.

I mean unless there's a way to update the Bluetooth board via an update... but i don't think that can be done.

Edit: And it's not a "wireless issue". Both 360 and Wii can reconnect on the fly for 99% of disconnect issues so you never notice them, or at worse, you have to tap the connect buttons and they reconnect themselves. Regardless, you never have to plug a wire into your wireless controller to remake the connection.

I still think that's so odd. You have have to wire up the wireless to get it going? Meh...

it hasnot happend to me but i get piss when my 360 controler batteries drain the ps3 has a pop up that tell you to charge the batterie so you know its gonna die soon on the 360 you got to look at the controller to see if its about to drain but oh well just got to live with it

It happened to me twice on Resistance in the same round online. This was within the first few days that I had the PS3, and it hasn't happened since.

Also, Xbox fanboys have absolutely no room to talk about hardware malfunctions. I don't plan on having to replace my controller, let alone the console itself every several months.

1) Bluetooth is extremely glitchy and routinely drops the connections between devices. Granted this situation has improved slightly since Bluetooth’s inception into the marketplace but this issue will probably be something that Playstation gamers will just have to get used to. Sorry folks.

2) Bluetooth uses a lot of battery power and is extremely inefficient in this regard. In other words: it is not a coincidence that the PS3 controllers have a large internal battery built-in, rather than giving the consumer the opportunity to use standard replaceable batteries – like the 2 AA batteries that 360 controllers can use.

3) The third reason why Microsoft decided not to use Bluetooth for the 360 is because the response time was simply deemed to be to slow for gaming by Microsoft engineers.

Please feel free to dispute this all that you want but when I read the story and the comments in this page; I immediately remembered an interview with a Microsoft exec whereby they proceeded to elaborate on the aforementioned points in response to being asked the question of why Bluetooth was not utilized in the 360.

Based on comments in this page, my own personal experience with Bluetooth, and my experience with the superb Xbox 360 wireless controller – I now fully believe that Microsoft did make the right choice in this regard.

Your right. You can buy 2 AA batteries cheaper than $10. I usually buy the larger packs but that's an option for you as well.

So I guess I should think of it this way.

PS3 Controller $50, and you have to toss it when your done.
360 Controller $50 + ~$2 for 2 AA batteries = $52 I can usually get about 2 months out of my batteries give or take. So $2 every 2 months = ~$6 per year.

~$56 not bad.

OR

360 Controller $50 + $30 for charging unit, and spare battery.
When the battery no longer takes a charge it's $10 for a new battery.

$90 in the long run.

Don't get me wrong people I have a 360, and I love it. However you have no ground to compare one console to the other. They both have pro's and con's.

It will all come down to what you feel is best for you.

I will have both, and enjoy every minute of it.

Its not a real issue, its happened to me like once and all I had to do was press the PS button real fast nothing more.
And incidentally the game pauses itself if the controller is not detected so there is no "loss of life"

My controller disconnecting once every 3 months is not as bad as other consoles dying for no clear reason.

Bad hardware or defect rate varies from brand to brand generation to generation and clearly somethings wrong with some console's, on a console to console bassis but what this sounds like is a universal design flaw and seems to be more of design flaw than a batch of faulty hardware in some consoles.

I wont even read all your comments but I saw a few to know that this site is the most ridiculous thing in the world sometimes. Some of you are so unbelievably immature. You wait for the bad news articles and everyone just jumps on it like a fly on sh*t why is it when new screens for Forza, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Lair, Heavenly Sword etc get released they get like 15 comments, but than articles about how the controllers are having a problem connecting get hundreds? Some times I just never want to come back to this site as I can get the majority of this news from IGN. Sadly, I like to be able to comment and read what you all have to say. But it's things like this article that make you all look so pathetic. You all say "It's about the games" yet the "games" don't get attention when their is new info out on them. ya ive know about this since me and my friend got our ps3's. Together we have 6 contollers combined and every single controller screws up every once and a while. Nothin new to me

It's the 2.4 to blame...NOT the controller. My sixaxis turns on my stereo sometimes...it's a like 5 year old RCA. I don't know HOW...but it does!

I think they need to start using something besides frequencies for controllers...if at ALL possible. Probably not yet though!

The 36o has a lot of options you can get ps3 forces you to pay 640.. Plus if the new rumor is true and the premium will start to be 300 then what??? All you would need is the plug in play and the wi-fi which is 120... so 420.. to be playing next gen games ... thats like what 220! dollars I just saved!!! Thats like 3 games and a Msoft points for movies. So I can leave with 3 games and some points when I buy my x36o while on theother hand I just paid 600 plus tax with no games and no HDMI cable... but just being totally honest, this happens to my contollers often. like two, three times a week often. now you guys know i love my ps3, so i don't wanna hear "oh, you're a fanboy", to me this is a serious issue. i got warranties on my controllers but the reason i haven't taken them back is because i know the new controllers with rumble are coming soon. so i'm just trying to be patient. the good news is this is the only problem i've had with my ps3. which is good considering the problems i had with my 360 when it came out. hopefully with all this attention put on the subject, sony will do something and stop saying they've never heard of a problem. it is a problem, at least with mine and to me thats enough.

Both times were when I had a wireless router. It sucked when it happened but outa the plenty of hours online, it didn't ruin my experience at all. Since then I've switched to a wired connection and have had no issue with my controller losing connection. Why that is, I have no idea.

Seriously, though: I have had customers come to my store complaining of connectivity issues with their PS3 controllers. Not a lot of people, mind you, but a few. Many of them had the same circumstances as many of the posters here: Wireless router, cordless phone, etc. One guy's controller goes out whenever his Bluetooth-enabled cell phone rings. (He now turns it off when he plays!)

I'm not knocking Sony by pointing this out; I have just as many complaints about various issues with the 360.

id rather have it be the controllers that screw up just for a while rather than the whole conole f@ck up like the 360s 3 flashing lights of dooom that happens to almost everybody owns the 360. its happened to me, and a whole bunch of my friends. so stop BSing xbots at least the ps3 doesnt break down

its the bluetooth, because me an my wife both has bluetooth earpieces for our cell phones an for some reasone they would just disconnect!!I go to make a call an transfer the call to my earpiece an it says no earpiece connected, then in about 3-5 seconds its pop back up an connect. so I dont think its the PS3 but the actual bluetooth technology!!but its not as big of a deal as people are making it out to be!!

One thing that's cool about the 360 controllers is the lightz.... circular four lights on the system corresponds with the lightz on each controller. pretty neat. AND AND AND.. with the charge and play kit... i can use the controller to play PC games..... The PS3 controller does the same i think... KUDOS!!!

dude what r u smoking?? at least half my friends 360 have gotten the 3 red lights (mine included) and same thing all over. u got lucky but u have to admit the 1st generation of 360s broke down a lot and some of the later gen ones too. but, MS has real good service over the phone they send u a box within three to 5 days literally and then u ship it and they fix it within 2 weeks. its quite efficent and u dont have to pay, but id be nice if they didnt break in the 1st place. 360s a great gaming console no questions asked but id be nice if so many of them didnt break or whatever the hell the three flashing red ligh sh1t didnt happen

No one really cares about a price comparision that can be spun so many different directios or what technology is better or wether wired internet is better than wireless, as Microsfot said it (yes a PS3 boy agreeing with ol' Pete, earthshaking I know) its about choice. Some choose a 360 some choose PS3. Both have Pros and Cons, but ultimately it what I choose to game on or my games. Honestly I could even careless if every game goes multi. Phew, now that my rant is over....to the subject: Yea I had this issue once with my PS3 when my BT headset was paired to the PS3 and my phone still had it registered. Recieved phone call and the controller froze up for about 3 seconds. I switched the headset off and it came back up quickly with me having to touch anything. I just went back to my PS2 Headset. Problem solved no more freeze up in my case.

nonsense..... i charge my controller about every three days and have never lost connection. Only unpluging the usb while charging and using at the same time has this effect.( push ps button..2 sec later BAM!! your wireless sixaxis is back). this probably only happens to players who pull temper tantrums and start twisting and throwing their control( my little brother already destroyed one, all screw hole posts broke)

This is the 1st time ive seen this fangirl stuff on this site but sticking to the blog. It happens but not enough to be a problem and it mostly happens when your low on battery so i just switch controllers and charge the low one and im good.

It was during the Demo of motorstorm, this was about a week after launch. Since then no issues what so ever. My guess is that there maybe other Bluetooth devices or wireless devices in the same room that might cause interference.

If it's not that it's most likley a low battery, when you get into a game no warning on the screen is gonna reach the gamers eyes.

The fact that the PS3 has controller connection problems has nothing to do with the 360. I'm not the one to compare problems. I would hate to have my controller loose connection with my console. I have read reports of the PS3 doing this but lots of people ignored this. I hate the whole Bluetooth tech myself. That does not mean that bluetooth is no good, I have just had bad luck with it in cell phones, and computers. I think that the PS3 controller communications is fine. As much as I dislike Sony's whole PS3 ride of arrogance this is not a topic to talk about.

The biggest problem I have with the PS3 joystick is the internal non-replaceable battery. I call it the premeditated rape axis. It will take all about 9 months for the battery to totally fail on you. Then Bam $50.00 extra bucks. When all they had to do was give the option of using disposable batteries or replicable.

I know it hurts to read but the 360 joysticks are perfect. Replaceable batteries and the option of disposables Sweet and you know it. I have had the same recharge sets for a year now. Cannot go with out it. PS3 has No rumble for now and I will believe it only when I see it. Sony's game division is king of the bait and switch.

I'm bringing up the point that you will have to replace the controller once the internal non-replaceable battery dies. The life cycle of you average rechargeable battery is 9 - 12 months.

I know PS1/2/3 controllers work well. And if the blu Tooth fails the games automatically pauses to give you the 2 seconds you need to reconnect.

If you have a 360 controller that dose not connect call them they will replace it. My control went out due to a faulty battery I bought And M$ replaced my rechargeable batteries and the 2 defective joysticks. They are real helpful you just need to know how to talk to people the right way.

Do not act like you had no idea that internal rechargeable batteries die over time. Think Cell phones DUH. Only wet cell batteries like car batteries have longer life cycles than 9 – 12 months. Yes Bluetooth is quirky. I have a Wii and have had some connection issues here and there with the remote. Nothing to cry home about though.

No, I have never had a connection issue with my 360 controller BUT I have had games freeze on me NUMEROUS times and I am just waiting for the day when that red ring shows its ugly face!

Trust me, if I had to choose, I'll take a "rare" controller hiccup over my entire game freezing which in turn needs a reboot.

First i must say i had this problem once and only once and i have had the system since launch in the US. It was a quick off and on with the other controller think the juice was getting low.
Second as for the controller being garbage when the batt life cycle ends is BS Sony says in the manual that you can take the back off the controller and replace the battery. enough said !

You can choose your console based on anything you like. We all know each and every console has had issues. We all remember blowing N.E.S. games as GamerMan put it and agree some stuff just comes with the turf. Each console will have its problems. I also think that we should be able to have debates about it too. I have personally been turned off from buying a PS3 due to the many issues surrounding it but I will not hesitate to play with my friends who own one. It is all about the games and if Sony starts to give what I want personally from them I‘ll gladly crack my wallet. So far I do not need booth. But I do love shooting free throws with the SIXAXIS and wish they had rumble so when playing MoterStorm you could feel the ruts and guide your self better when attempting to ram an opponent off the road or cliff.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
