Many dying BluRay lasers (remember the PS2 laser diode problem? Its the same all over again) and YLOD's especially now the launch PS3's starting to act strange lately wide spread. Just hit the N4G forums...

My PS3 had a dying laser after 3 weeks of use (80GB LBP pack). A friend of mine had it after a couple of days. With the introduction of the pricecut, 40GB models and on, it seems the quality of expensive parts like the BluRay have dropped as the problem wasn't there before. Go check on the internet in forums. Its a big problem.

YLOD again, go check in the N4G forums. Many big PS3 fans, very active on N4G had their PS3 die, mostly launch models. Madden Raiders, PostedUp, Meus Renaissance, LJ Wooly, Kevers (twice) for example also, but many, many others.

Fact is: Sony gives 1 year of warranty. After that one pays 200 Euro overhere and you get someone elses refurbished PS3 back not your own.

Microsoft gives you 3 years of warranty and you get your own 360 back (in the early days also refurbished but now not anymore)

Don't know the % of PS3's that got the several problems, but its certainly not below the 1% that Sony wants you to believe it is. And the 33% said about the 360 is also not accurate anymore, since it was on launch consoles without the extra heatsink on the GPU which is with repairs after may 2007 plus not taken into notion the newer models with different motherboards and smaller chips/less power consumption.

Thus: go check the forums for BluRay diodes dying and the YLOD's. There are many...

This guy must have been really pissed of because of RROD to write an article like this. I mean, he said it himself, that site is dedicated to Microsoft, wonder how long before that article is forced to be removed due to certain pressure from anonymous source. But finally, an article about 360's hardware failure from their inner circle ! I'm starting to change my view a little bit about gaming world. It's a very good info for most potential buyer ( He even suggested PS3 with K2 LOL ). This kinda hardware failure is really intolerable, especially after they fix one issue, another one occurs, and then another one and so on and so on, what else is gonna occur next ? I don't really care which system sells more, I only want to play good games on a reliable console, so after my 1st RROD, I just discarded it and wait for any news about this RROD crap being solved for good, so far....no luck. Thank God I can save enough money to purchase a $400 PS3. Well, MS gonna loose even more customer if they can't find a permanent solution, that's for sure.

the ps3 and wii are the only consoles worth owning, for their exclusives. the 360's best games are either on the pc or came from the pc. the 360 is a defective piece of hardware that i'm really shocked is still being allowed to be sold legally, and the online isn't free, which is also a huge negative for me($50 per year is an outrage). i have absolutely no reason to consider owning the system.

but MS, like they do with all their other products, market the hell out of it, and get their paid off media(e.g. MSNBC etc etc) to dishonestly deface their competition. i really feel sorry for bill gates, he's a good guy, but his associates like balmer, are nasty vultures just out to make a quick buck at any cost.

of course this is just my opinion, based on my circumstances of being a pc, ps3, psp, ds and wii gamer.

It's not exactly a new issue and al recent reports indicate that the problem is getting better, not worse. Something fishy is going on, this article is about a year or two out of date.

I see fanboys don't know what they are talking about, when saying the PS3 has only 12 months warranty.

I phoned Sony (UK) 2 weeks ago because I was having problems with Blu-Ray movies pausing half way through. I told him that my PS3 was a launch model and he said no worries the repair (if needed) will be done for free for the life of the unit.

While talking on the phone, we managed to fix the problem by going into the (secret) Service Menu and doing a system files check, which it found a few problems. It sorted the files out with a click on a button :)

If my PS3 breaks then I will not spend any money or time getting it fixed. No ifs no buts I'd never spend another penny on PS3 products again I guarantee it. That's how it should be. Companies ought to earn your hard earned money not exchange it for something that doesn't work.

The newer consoles last if you treat them well. Don't put them in an enclosed space fex.
And besides there is a reason why you have warranty. If you can't live without your xbox 360 for a week or two you have a problem.. And it isn't that your 360 broke.

i have benefitted from rrod quite well actually. I have 3 xbox 360s and i paid 150 for all 3. i like fixing electronics anyway so to me it is a win win. i get to play with electronics and i get a nice videogame system for super cheap. rrod can be fixed i have 2 that have been running strong for months now. and if they do break and i cant fix them oh well i will buy another and fix it for next to nothing. and some have other problems other than rrod and they are even easier to fix. hell someone gave me a 360 2 days ago cause it didnt read discs...took me all of 5 minutes to fix that and i have a free system now.

besides the older systems that are still out there are getting rrod is to be expected, if they are still running this long you are lucky. but the newer systems if they get rrod it is really the users fault for sticking it in an entertainment center. i wouldnt put any electronics in one of those hot boxes anyway. they are not designed by electronic people they are designed by furniture people and they dont take into consideration air flow and heat and all that with electronics.

I don't get it why doesn't Microsoft fix this f*cking problem already? This is why I haven't gotten the 360 yet because of these stupid problems that MS does not want to fix(they tried but its still not fully fixed), I have a Ps3 yes, but I also like the 360 too. My cousin has a 360 & I game on his console. What the flip is going on MS? What is up with the E74 error code? Damn, this sucks because I thought that the rrod problem was subsiding now I have to worry about a E74 error, I was planning on getting the arcade model($200) but I don't even know what to do anymore. If SONY can do anything its make reliable electronic hardware. I dont know how long they have been doing it but its gotta be very long time.

Microsoft could turn there repair prob around easily, not by reducing the number of RROD's or E74 etc, the consoles will still fail at the normal rate, I myself have 3 consoles
BUT what they need to do is quit with the "WE ARE REPAIRING YOUR CONSOLE" BULLSH@T!!!!

They don't repair "your" console, you always get a refurbished one back, why not just admit that's what their doing and make it policy, then console repairs could be done a on 5 business day turnaround. Once they confirm receipt of your console, the refurbished one is fired off to consumer------------SIMPLE FIX

I find it insulting that I'm waiting 3-4 weeks while they pretend their trying to fix "MY" console.

My brother ridiculed me when I told him ps3 would be better than 360. He was saying all the 360 features to me. I mean, I respected xbox and 360 as a whole, I had 2 xboxes but that doesn't mean I was blind to which system was better. Yeh I think xbox raped ps2 with halo and xbox live but ps3 was new and better and it was better than 360.

Anyway I digress, the point is today my brother owns a PS3 with like 14 games and all he can say is how good ps3 is. Whenever he's talking to his friends he's just like "What? 360 is garbage, it's all about the ps3 man"

They are replacing flawed hardware with... guess what, FLAWED HARDWARE. The only thing that would "FIX" the problem is a motherboard redesign. The Jasper is supposed to lower the heat which should make folks less susceptible to this type of problem.

But if you have any other issues like Bricked power supply ($100) to replace or DVD drive failure, which bricks your console, then you're shyt out of luck. Unless you are willing to crack open your 360 and buy a replacement DVD lens for the system and repair it yourself.

Also, you do get refurbs. When my almost new 360 got sent off for repairs, I got a refurb back that gave me disc read errors all the damn time. And it doesn't make sense to make the case to argue for getting a new console, cause even a BRAND NEW one is capable of failing the same way as a two year old console. When my new 360 died it only had 2 weeks worth of playing time on it. I BABIED that console because I KNEW of the issues around it, but it didn't matter.

This is what I come to expect from N4G now, all anti 360 posts and pro PS3 articles. Especially a post about the more than tired and very OLD RRoD issue. Seriously, we all know its a major problem with the 360.

I am no fan of Microsoft, but I am one of the few that has had my 360 since launch and NO RRoD for me. My main complaint is the fricken d-pad...but I'm getting off topic.

N4G is getting way out of control and it's actually killing my perception of this site I once held in high regards. A few months back it was LBP this and LPB that, now all I do is trip over KZ2, PSP articles and Ban the 360 posts.

I'm no fanboy, I own all three systems and all three have their highs and lows. But for a group of supposed gamers to ban together and just post garbage about one system is foolish and insane. It was great back in the Super NES and Genesis days but enough is enough, its time to grow up.

Buy and play at your own risk.
System will fail within first 2 years and be prepared for a long wait for repairs. We know we have a design problem, we have not fixed it. But we will keep swapping out boxes until 3 year warranty is over. Yes our customer service is worse than Comcast.

Recommend you go buy another console that is more reliable in future - you should have learned your lesson from first RROD system failure

360 is a piece of unreliable hardware.

I enjoy it just like everyone else, I admit it's 'enjoyable'...but it is nowhere near as reliable as my Launch PS2 that is still working after 10 long years. Fu#k all the haters, keep replacing your 360s and flushing money down the drain...

Nobody is denying the fact that RRoD is still constant, but what people need to realize is Microsoft isn't doing anything to fix it. The faulty consoles are replaced with other faulty consoles. Do you actually think they will put a new motherboard in each RRoD sent to them? M$ seriously needs to stop screwing their fanbase over and fix the problem. Not that I don't agree with what they are saying, but I have serious doubts that this is actualy written for the consumer. For one, Microsoft is not going to send you a "new" 360 when it breaks so for them to say that ruins credibility off top. As for the rest of the article it reads almost like a set-up to the next installment which is going to supposedly claim Jasper models fix it all and therefore we will be getting a follow up article quicker than you ever imagined saying all is right in the world. I'm sorry I don't believe this article and I can't believe the next article they will soon publish saying the new chip set is the cure because it's not the chips that are the problem. The overall design is faulty and they could replace the chip with an icecube and it still will have scratching discs, overheating, and disc read errors. I'm sorry.

I had a 360 launch unit for 2 and a half years without any problems... I sent it off for repair and got myself a new one in the meantime (a new cooler unit ect).

That brand new unit had video problems from day one... I took it back and got a new unit. This second wouldn't read disks so I took it back the third one seems ok (btw: this was all within 2 days). The guy in the shop asked me "what the hell are you doing to them" and I felt really embarrassed for him and myself because all I had done was take it home, unboxed it and plug it in... and they 'fail'.

As I took my third (new unit) home another guy behind the counter said "You should just get a PS3".

The truth is, as hard as it is for 360 fans to accept, the 360 hardware is poor in build quality and poor in some design aspects too.

I have also had a PS3 from launch and despite a slow start with software it is now a very strong system. Here's why:

The PS3 has pretty much all the games a 360 has, much better exclusives (IMO) and a much more diverse and varied range of games on PSN and the online is free and it has Online experiences that are unmatched by XBL... 360 has nothing that matches Warhawk's scale let alone something like Resistance 2.

PS3 has a wealth of Multimedia capability, it's quiet and most of they don't generally break.

Yes you can pixel count and spot the odd frame drop on a PS3 version of a poor 360 port but to be honest there's nothing noticeable between 360 and PS3 games these days unless your armed with some kind of industry grade analyzing equipment :-)

My advice is...

If your 360 breaks or your thinking of getting into this generation then get a PS3 and like me let all your worries float away.

I work at a video game and movie rental store. One of our regular customers comes in looking to see if we have a 360 to rent. Up until that week we did not have a 360 to rent as they had all had RRODd the past year. Now we actually had received a brand new 360 and we rented it out to them. So they call the next day and inform that the 360 was not turning on. After continuing attempts to start it up, it got the RROD. BRAND NEW 360. I feel bad for them as they lost their 360 and then had another 360 f up on them. Neways, 360 is garbage and i am glad to here this from an xbox site.

Im on my 6th 360 which IS indeed BS. But I'd be bummed out if I missed out on MS's awesome exclusive games. I must say though that after my 2 year warranty is up on April 15th 2010 and it dies on me again, I WON'T be going back to the system and I will get rid of everything I have for it. I have a 60 gig PS3 so I won't be hurting for my top tier games that my Wii can't do. My fingers are crossed that I can just make it to play Alan Wake, that is it.

If it weren't for the un-reliabilty for the console it would be a fantastic system. But it's plagued with issues that only a handful of people miraculously are skating by without running into them. I have a few friends that just fix their consoles themselves and have had no problems since. But to the average consumer who knows nothing of whats going on, and those of us that are just tired of dealing with it! this is a utter pain in the a$$.

But 360 DOES have awesome games/franchises that Im more than greatful to get to play. 360 DOES have great games that I cannot play on my PS3. But the unreliabilty of it has made my patience wear thin... very thin!

I also must say it's quite a joke seeing all the PS3 Fanboy Trolls rallying in here saying "DIE 360, GO AWAY 360" blah, blah, fanboy banter, blah!. But they complain and talk about how the world NEEDS PS3, etc.. The world NEEDS MS just as much as Sony, and both MS and Sony NEED Nintendo. If either company would s#!t out of making consoles... Apparently i have a golden Xbox 360.

Why i say that? Because i bought it on November 03 2007 and is still alive. No RROD, No Disc Scratch and Not even a little problem. Its true that sometime with some games sound loud but i turn up my surround sound so loud that sometimes i forget that i have a phone in the house. I also enjoy it using my surround sound headphones too.

That there's have been Xbox 360 in the pass with problems YES! that all of them reported have been flaws NO. Do you wanna know why? This is what one of my "friends" did with his modded Xbox 360, by the days microsoft told everybody that it was going to start banning people from live the son of the b!tch broke it on purpose. How? He scratch his GRAW 1 copy on purpose and start playing the game multiplayer then he start having constant freeze on some maps (3 maps)on multiplayer matches so he keep playing the game for over 12 days and then boom a damn error occur he call microsoft lie to them telling them that his 360 was having freeze problems they send him a box he send the box back to them then he receive a brand new 360(just the console of course) back instead. And he notice that he can fool them again so he did it again by the end of his new 360 console warranty. Now guess what. There was a lot of gamers out there doing the same stuff and other stuffs. So yes some broken 360 have been legit problems but remember there was a lot of people taking advantages of the warranty too.

I have had nothing to say about Microsoft except for extremely bad things and I mean bad things, In fact I'm not even going to bother telling the multiple stories I have... It would take a few pages to express my hate.

But I have to be honest, as much as you'd think I would grab my 360 throw it off a building, run over it with a bulldozer and cover it in gas a light it on fire, I can't bring myself to do it, what can I say I like some of the games. On the other hand Sony has been nothing but awesome.

Its funny how people say things like "Look how well M$ has done in just 2 generations".

Umm, how many generations did Sony take to wipe the floor with the two companies that owned gaming all to themselves? Yeah, thats right, one. By their 2nd, they had smashed their own record. No one had sold that many consoles before and Sony did it twice and changed gaming forever. M$ has brought some good things to the table to like the HDD standard (which their then adbandoned to save a few bucks) but they basically just said "Me too, we want some of that pie."

And lets not deny, every good fortune they've had this gen has been due to launching early, and nothing else.
The sad thing is they launched early at the expense of the customer and most dont even care. They've lowered the standard of expectation so much people aren't shocked when it breaks, they simply shrug and say well it was just a matter of time. A sad state of affairs indeed that makes me cringe at the though of M$ realising they could lose again and rush out another dumbly named, poorly built console.

rrod doesn't happen to everyone you know. At launch about 36% of the 360's were a time bomb, and it just reduced from there. Don't get me wrong, RROD is such a freaking hassle, but it doesn't happen to everyone, so don't think that every 360 owner is on their 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th 360.

My first 360 was bought in August of 2007(20gb). My RROD was June of 2008(got it back in about a month, thats when i appreciated my ps3), I got an E74 error in January 2009(Thats when I bought an elite).

I'm also on my 2nd COD4 disc, because apparently, if you move the 360 even a tiny bit, the disc gets scratched. There was a whole lawsuit with this also. Some guy sued MS because his 360 was scratching his disks. He got $50k + attorney fees.

Im on my 2nd ps3 too. Thankfully, i had a protection plan from best buy. It was purchased February of 2007. I set up the HD(1080i) with component cables, and when i updated it, it turns off, and when it turns back on, no display. But I haven't gotten this problem ever again.

Hey, it's Microsoft at it's best. Getting all the money they can, leaving their loyal fans(Of course, just for Halo and Gears) in the dirt. I'm not gonna bash MS too much on this topic, but this whole nickel and dimming customers (With the purposely left out system essentials) and faulty systems is getting ridiculous.

It`s like when they ask you, what`s your favorite beer? do you buy that one? No because is expensive. You go for the cheaper one to get drunk.

With consoles is the same, they think, i cant save $100 and with that buy 2 games and the subscription to Live, and that happens because Sony only now is showing what they have, what games they wil provide.

In 1 year or less PS3 will cost almost the same as Xbox, and with the list of games they have, free online. They will surpass Microsoft as the GOOD option, and once that happens i rather not be a Xbox owner because beleive the company will jump of the board when they stop selling.

MS has no leg to stand on.. they have ripped off gamers like no other company has in the history of vid games. I am on my 3rd 360 and the drive sounds like a frigging train...shameful..

Its bad enough to go through 3 consoles, but to have to deal with the absolute hideous and have to say it dumb telephone support folks just adds insult to injury.. AND from my experience the supervisors are as lame as first line support

Ive RROD'd once since 2006 & had the unit repaired last year. I can't regret the fun I've had with xbl & 360's game library I have enjoyed since launch. I also went through 3 PS2's in it's lifecycle (& I still have one & an Xbox 1 & an N64 & a PS1 btw) & I don't regret that either. PS360 FTW !!!

I so cannot believe how the tables have turned in 2 years. All of a sudden its the cool thing to own a PS3.

I still have my x360 from MAY 2006 and non my my 40 plus friends online have any issues with their machines so I guess we are all lucky then.

PS3 fanboys just need to know their roles and shut their mouths because all this papaganda won't do you guys any good. Just accept the sad fact that the PS3 is in last place for good this generation. It is OK, now cry me a river.
