I guess you missed the report that the total number (17mil) is Gold and Silver accounts. You must have also missed the leaked MS email showing about 50% of Live accounts were gold.

(but really, sony's gotta look into getting something like this out there. expanding their gamercards a little more too. the concept images might be a lil far out there for sony. but i'm sure they can get it done. and i don't care if they charge extra for the extra features. just as long as i can play online with others FOR FREE, after all, we did pay full price for a full featured game, we should always be able to play what we've baught... and thats where i think xboxlive is wrong in forcing players to buy a gold membership just to play a game they've already had to pay for. if i wanted all the extra featured, party chats, private chats, cross game invites, then i'd have no problem paying for their services. but just to play online? cmon.

anyway. sony, do it right. i know they will, it's just a matter of time.

...really needs a job at Sony, because it DOES look rather cool. I like how they made the icons look. The guy certainly spent some time making it (well, besides the trophy misspelling).

But yeah, I know it's false (I suddenly have 10 disagrees on my other comments on this story from people who either can't read, just don't CARE, or don't know the point I was TRYING to make...or have a personal problem with ME), but that doesn't mean that we can't hope or that Sony isn't working on these things for the future.

Yes it would be sick, but its not true. Hydro made it up after the rumour of a XBL pricedrop, which he thinks is because Sony will soon match XBL.

They're trying for 2.5 years and the things promised at PSN launch aren't still here. Probably because PSN isn't set up as an unified service and changing a structure laid out probably is nearly impossible.

With the current number of users, the price can come down because basic costs are covered with a certain amount of users paying amount x

That basic number of critical users to have the basic costs covered has been achieved at some point in time. The hardcore users that don't care about paying 50 or even 100 bucks a year to get a premium service might have been reached. Now MS is going for the average gamer and maybe casual user that thinks 50 bucks a year is too much, but for 29 bucks they would go for it. That makes a much faster growing number of users, larger group of users x 29 dollar compared to a relative slower growing group of hardcore users x 50 bucks, thats the decision they make.

Probably they see the increase in 360's sold compared to the same months a year back that the critical mass of people is going up, moving into the average and casual market. Sony on the other hand is selling less PS3's compared to same months a year before (as far as I know that started somewhere last September 2008, January 2009 again showed the same painfull trend to continue), with CHristmas 2008 as one of the most sad months for the PS3 for sure compared to Christmas 2007.

But this article brings up some good points behind all that fanboyism. It's true the PS3 need a party system/game invites/cross game chat. In my mind these are the only features that make the XBL better than the PSN.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
