I'd say it's as valid a criticism as complaining about multiple disks.
Neither is ideal, but each have their advantages and disadvantages, it's hard to complain about one and then turn around and say the other is better. I'd rather have neither.

Still, this article is stupid, it's not vaguely constructive at all and doesn't even offer one single point as to why it's a bad criticism, instead it just outright flames anyone for complaining. I think having to wait 15mins to install a game is a perfectly valid criticism, just as valid as the supposedly "legitimate" criticisms the article itself lists.
It even has the audacity to compare it to a PC game from about 7 years ago, as if it's somehow relevant.

I typically don't mind installs--who has the time to wait the 15 secs between matches of SF IV. I want the 9 seconds offered by a 10 minute install, darn it. /sarcasm

However, I do mind that certain companies can't seem to (or don't want to) work on moving them away from being mandatory.

Don't get me wrong, I understand that some companies need that leeway for their first PS3 releases--Volition and Saints Row 2 come to mind. But it's 2 years into the PS3's life cycle and some devs, even after multiple releases (*cough* CAPCOM *cough*), still can't get their stuff together.

It's especially sad when devs like Insomniac OFFER FREE advice on how to optimize games for the PS3...

people need to get over this crap really.. all that matters is the games ! if you like the game enough you change the disc or wait 5-10 min for the install.

when are we going to get back to playing and cut the petty moaning about each others systems, we know we would put up with it if it was on our system of choice but just because its the competition we use all this crap as ammo to fire at each other in this petty console war crap.

i mean ok, the flame wars are fun sometimes and i love a good debate and mud throwing now and then, but this stuff is old, really old.

Love the closing sentence, it's so true, playing games is a waste of time. If you're so concerned about your time getting used efficiently, then you shouldn't be playing in the first place.

I find it so amusing when people complain about installs. It shows a complete lack of understanding.
For a 360 owner to site it as a criticism for other systems (PS3 and PC) is for them to unknowingly point out a fault with their own system. Installs are used to decompress data from the disk to the HDD. This allows for large games to be fitted on a single disk without loss of graphics fidelity, loading times, or (in the case of an update) fixes to the software in question.
The 360 can't utilize installs because it would render the Arcade version of the console worthless and as such Microsoft would not be able to sell them.
It for this very reason, compression, some multiplats look worse on 360 (I'm looking at you Rage).
So the argument that changing a disk is quicker then an install is a joke when you remember the fact that the differences in the game without an install (to allow decompression, fix bugs or what ever the case may be) are there for life.

Some gamers these days really aren't making complaints to get things changed its all just fanboy flamebait garbage. I'm so tired of all this crying about "y" console or "z" console. A 10-20 minute install (required or not) doesn't effect me in the least, seriously its not a big deal. I didn't install SF4 because loading screens don't bother me. I was alittle more bothered by the texture loading at the beginning of UT3 at the start of games (even after the intall).

Killzone 2 is 4 days away and I couldn't be anymore excited. Gamers game and fanboy compllain.

its really weird how people make such a big deal about it. either way, we get to play games...but i'm all for shorter load times. its not about disk space, since blu ray have that...its a matter of waiting 1 minute for something to load, or 30 seconds. sometimes that one minute can piss a person off when its in the middle of a session. on the other hand...10 to 15 minutes gives anyone a chance to grab a snack, fix the room up a little bit...or drum up some excitement...no wonder gamers still have negative stereotypes...

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
