When i first time saw screens of SO4, i said myself, wow, now that looks like a nextgen game on x360. I was impressed.

It looked maybe not as good as FFXIII, but it definitely looked like a nextgen jrpg.

That time i thought, that maybe x360 can do a nextgen graphics, like PS3. I really liked SO4 graphics, except that later, when i saw those characters, they looked like a dolls.., but overall, gameplay graphics looked like what i would call a nextgen.

But now, now i get, why the game looked like a nextgen, it`s because it runs just barely above SD resolution. Funny, that God of War 2 also look like a nextgen game, also run in SD resolution, BUT that is PS2...

p.s. now i understand, how Square will make FFXIII to run on x360. =)

510p, if true, is horrible. Just for the record though, the lowest defined HD source is 854x480 interlaced at 30 frames per second labeled as EDTV or 480i. The highest defined SD source is 720x480 interlaced at 30 frames per second. 510p is still horrible though.

The title for the thread where this comes from is "Image Quality and Framebuffer SPECULATIONS for UNRELEASED Games"

In other words, they're looking at released screenshots, which are not necessarily indicative of the final product. So nothing, and I mean NOTHING, has been confirmed at this point.

I'm on the fence here, it seems absurd for anyone to release a game of this low quality, but with the way Squeenix has gone lately, I really would not be surprised in the slightest.

It's got absolutely nothing to do with disk space...at all...

Rendering with a smaller internal framebuffer does not save you any kind of disk space. You might be thinking lower resolution textures, but they've got nothing to do with the framebuffer, by the time the scalar chip inside the 360 scales it up to 720p or 1080p for displaying on your TV, the textures would look the the same if you rendered the scene at 720p or 1080p. The benefit from higher resolution framebuffers is "less jaggies", which is also what AA is for.

I think Tales of Vesperia and Valkyria Chronicles probably both look better than this game. Just my opinion though, and I haven't played Star Ocean 4.

I agree with you, I don't think the reason for this was to save space, but still, low resolution can help reduce space, even if not in a direct way, for example, when you reduce the resolution you can get away with less texture details or you can reduce the polygons count and no one would notice, so it kinda do help.

Yes the battles are rendered low but if you even take a moment to watch battles it would be nearly impossible to maintain a stable frame rate no matter what hardware its on. Too many full screen explosions with several character on the screen simultaneous. outside battles the game is running at a very high resolution.

also those who keep bring up wkc sure it runs 1080 but it looks like absolute ass more like a high resolution ps2 game. every review has said the combat is an absolute blast and bring up the score even with all its other shortcomings.

All these guys were just talking trash about SF4 being lower rez when you do a special combo, pause the game, get a magnifying glass, put your face 1" from the TV, stand upside down, place your 360 controller on your crotch and make it rumble you will see the PS3 version is inferior.

Either Tri-ace has lost developing skill or its the 360 hardware but I think it is tri-ace.

Tri-ace engine is buggy and they need to dump it or fix it. All the games released from them on the 360 have frame rate problems. I will be afraid to see their PS3 games it might run like The Orange Box.

That's possible...I know that the next Xbox will definitely have to have something bigger than DVD-9. Changing discs doesn't bother me...I did it for FFVII...but there's something to be said for having it all on one disc.

But as I noted below, graphics are secondary to me when it comes to this game.

the reason SO4 runs low res is because its only in battle, actual game runs at a higher resolution. plus i've heard reports that the battles run at 60fps which people dont even mention.

You know damn well everyone wants BOTH. Though it's more like 65% gameplay and 35% graphics. But still, an F1 racing champion is 25% car, 25% team, and 50% driver. In order to be complete you must have everything.

Otherwise, if graphics aren't important then everyone should sell their 360's and PS3s and just get a SNES, since that console is one of the best ever created.

Well, while I agree that's how it should be, it just so happens that this, according to the reviews so far, seems to lack a good story.

Which isn't a surprise. But still, the battle system is supposed to be good. I'm personally expecting this to ship on the PS3 within the year.

Depending on more reviews, will have to see if it's worth the time to invest in it.

But I think it also has alot to do with the intent of the person saying it. Hasn't anyone here ever said "Hey heres my N****r" when they see a friend, meaning Heres, my buddy, my pal, my bro. IT DOES NOT mean heres my black slave. Used like that its a term of affection, not malice. Metal Gear is not 1080p native either, it's upscaled like just about any game this gen. True 1080p is a myth when it comes to games. I'd like to smack the guy who coined the phrase "true HD". If this story is true and the game is running 510p native (odd resolution to begin with), it will still be upscaled to the highest resolution your tv can provide.

Too much focus is being made on resolution today which is probably why the Wii is still selling as fast as they can be produced.

I've never played a Star Ocean game because it had the best graphics. I play them because they are fun games and hopefully, SO4 will be as well. graphics are one thing, but this game seems to suffer the same technical problems that other 360 rpgs have suffered--stuttering animation and poor frame rates.

Regardless of how you feel about graphics, in the type of battles SO is known for, those other two are unacceptable.

vvvvvv yeah but I will take features like 4 player co-op, saved films, forge, and a kickass multiplayer at 640p over a higher rez but less feature 720p version of Halo3 anyday....yeah and Halo3's Live popularity is vindication that Bungie made the right the decision. SF4 and SO4 while being great in their own right still aren't offering any new feature sets that require alot of intensive cpu/gpu horsepower.

Look at the Last Remnant, a game built on the unreal engine and the engine was essentially supposed to go hand and hand with the 360 hardware. Yet it ran like crap anyway.

I expect 481p for the PS3 version of Last Remnant.

And SO4 PS3 version could be comparable to Pong. I'd even give an edge to Pong in the graphics department.

THIS IS JUST BATTLE RESOLUTION. if you watch the battle which are 60fps it would be impossible to render smoothly otherwise. in the same thread they're talking about how SF4 is inferior on the ps3 but of course that doesnt get reported.

I found Lost Odyssey had much better presentation and overall quality. SO4 looks like a poor-man's SO3. Hell even the voice acting and poor facial qualities turn me off already. This just adds to it. It's like SO4 didn't even try to be an RPG.

Just compare the cut-scene quality of both LO and SO4 and you'll see my point.

As far as the advertised resolution goes, it's labeled as 1080p http://www.xbox.com/en-US/g... Even if it's not native, it's still being displayed at 1080p if your tv can accept it.

Being on a modified Infinite Undiscovery engine, I would imagine the graphics quality will be somewhat similar. The developer claims the graphics are better. http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Bottom line is make your own decision on any game on any platform before being to caught up in the resolution debate.

It's not about which console sucks: it's about the idea that this game is shaping up to suckiness and that Tri-Ace aren't very talented-devs in this gen. Which goes to conclude that this game never had any potential to begin with and porting it would further prove Tri-Ace's lack of talent.

If FRD ported Haze to 360: it probably would've been worse. If Silicon Knights ported Too Human to PS3: it probably would've been worse. You dig?

5 years development and an entire studio dedicated to that ONE project. Not every game gets that kind of time or attention. KZ2 should do well and I would suggest that PS3 owners show up for it...otherwise Guerrilla could find themselves in Free Radical's shoes.

Development of Killzone 2 most likely started when Killzone went gold. Realistically speaking it's been 4 years and maybe 3-6 months with a team of over 200 people. Work on the PSP version of Killzone was done by a seperate team within the company. It has been stated in interviews that the PSP team joined the rest of the Killzone 2 team when that project was completed.

It's impossible for Killzone 2 development to have gone into full force without final hardware kits, and those kits weren't finalized until April 2006 (a month after RSX was completed). Killzone 2 is a landmark achievement; plain and simple.

A lot of PS3 games (and even some multiplatform titles) have benefited from Killzone 2's development. The EDGE tools, for example, stemmed from GG's collaboration with other 1st party studios to easily optimize game code. Goes to show how important it is to have a strong network of internal studios.

Much in the same way Konami claims MGS4 is 1080p when in fact it's native resolution is much less. Disc space isn't the only obstacle when determining the resolution. Processing power is also taken into consideration which also reflects on frame rate. Cost is another large factor when determining a games resolution. If the game is still displayed in 1080p, what is the big deal with native resolution? I like pretty graphics, but the overall enjoyment of a game is not determined by graphics alone.

Resolution and graphics are determined by how hard a game engine can push the hardware it is running on. Also Death, I've never seen Konami claim that MGS4 was 1080p. The back of the box simply shows which output resolutions are supported.

Microsoft and Sony do the same in this case. They inform customers about supported output resolutions, not native resolutions.

SD= a line of Resolution being displayed in 480i meaning the line is Interlaced

HD= a line of resolution being displayed in 480p meaning the line is Progressive

However 1080i is equal to 720p if you have TV to display multiple Resolutions.

By the ATSC standards, "HD" starts at 720p: not 480p (480p is ED). 1080i is still being outputted at 1920x1080. Except the TV is downscaling the source. So 720p and 1080i would look the same by the human eye on a 32" TV set. However there's also the very distinct difference in refresh rates and methods of rendering, which can affect games that require a fast refresh rate like fighters. Interlaced might cause screen-tearing and moments of ghosting: depending on the game: which is why 720p is mostly preferred for those cases.

For someone who tells other people to learn about True Resolution, he doesn't know anything about it.

1080i is still 1920x1080 but interlaced.
720p is NOT equal to 1080i. People just think 720p is better because it's progressive which is a better match for games.

And anybody who wants to dispute, just check out Pirates of the Caribbean 3 on Blu-Ray, which is native 1080i. Then watch a 720p video and gauranteed Pirates will still look clear. To the untrained, 1080i looks just as good as 1080p, except in fast motion scenes.

standard definition is 480i or 576i.

EDTV is a tv capable of receiveing a HDTV signal, but downconverts it to 480p. (852x480)

HDTV is any tv that is capable of displaying 540p (old school res), 720p, 1080i and 1080p.

720p has 1280x720 pixels
1080i/p both have 1920x1080 pixels available.

The differance between an interlaced signal and a progressive signal is not in the details, it's in the amount of passes it takes to achieve that resolution. 1080i and 1080p are essentially identical with 1080i taking a frame rate hit since it takes multiple passes to accomplish it.

Sorry, but nothing I have seen from this game is very impressive at all. Plenty of other JPRPs have looked better to me: Lost Odyssey, Folklore, Tales of Vesperia, Eternal Sonata, and Valkyria Chronicles all looked better.

That video you linked to did not show a lot of things going on at once.
Honestly, I can see no reason why the game should look so poor and run at such a low resolution.

Could still be a pretty good game though...

That is exclusive to there console I guess the graphics on the XBox 360 is maxed out or it was exaggerated on paper to make you think the Xenon is more powerful then the RSX if it cant handle such a simple 720p and you XBox 360 fans said that Microsoft is right that 720p is the sweet spot but I guess having sub HD is the sweet spot for them!?!

Well I noticed the gamespot watermark on the pic so I went over there to check out the rest of the screenshots. I honestly have to say he picked the WORST looking screenshot out of them all. Granted most of the combat scenes still seem a bit pixelated, but they don't look half as bad as that particular one. Overall it seems like a good game even though it will take me a while to get used to the character models (they still seem a bit stiff and like they all injected just a little too much botox into their faces, then again that's just me). Chances are I'll pick this one up and I highly doubt it's going to look anywhere near as bad as what people are starting to fear. However, something that struck me was that the localized US version seems to be... toned down in a weird sort of way compared to the Japanese version. Compare the ones with the cg model portraits versus the anime style ones and it seems like there's quite a bit of difference (maybe just bad compression on the newer ones, I dunno)

Because its now multiplatform, if it comes in true HD, then that means either alot of 360 discs, a lower quality, or the quality of the PS3 version could be compromised.

I gladly trade 60FPS over some some extra pixels missing.

Last year I get to play the best RPG thus far this generation in LOst Odyssey and now SO4. Thank you Microsoft for supporting RPG fans outside of Japan.

Wahooo. Can't wait for this game, Sony fanboys will have to wait and wait and wait for a descent RPG while I will have this game next week. :P

But you miss the real point-in fact most of all this does. Fact is the general quality of jrpgs this gen isn't what it was is it? For whatever reason we're all getting short changed(while they can still seem to do decent jobs on the two handhelds which tells us all something I think as well as how good Persona3 and 4 are on PS2)on BOTH HD consoles, imo.
While you can say you think LO is the best this gen I'd say I probably felt VC was a better experience(personally I also liked the artstyle too)but whatever those two are the exceptions to the rule of mediocrity. SO4 doesn't lok like it's going to be up to the standard of the first two games but more at the level of the third when it should be better than that. TLR was the watermark for me and shows all the flaws that are infecting jrpgs right now both technical and artistic-glitches, stuttering FRs, poor story and a feeling of cheapness.
If they ca n do it ok on the cheaper to develop for consoles it seems to me that prolly not enough time and money is being given to the more intensive HD games and as the budget for them needs to be bigger corners in time and mney are being cut and we suffer the consequences and THEN let them get away with it by arguing about which console is gonna have more damn pixels onscreen? When they get us taking sides like that they can get away with mediocre games all day long and the sooner we all stop the bickering and ask the real questions the sooner we might get both answers and a few good jrpgs.
As we agreed LO and VC were great games(if neither well supported or actually great)so they know basically how to do it without going to FF13 lengths so why should we buy substandard fayre then justify it in fanboy spats and allow them to continue this trend?

Wow! When there are games out there like Killzone 2 and Gears of War, it's really sad when developers can't even seem to get their games to run at a true HD resolution.

In the end though, I think things like framerate slowdown and screen tearing are more offensive than lower resolutions. I wonder how smoothly this game runs...

With such a low resolution you would hope and expect that it would run buttery smooth, with nary a torn frame in sight. We'll see.

If anyone took the time to download any of the trailers from the Japanese Marketplace you can easily see that this JRPG is one of the best looking out there.

This game may run at 510p native but the 1080p upscale is vibrant and beautiful.

I remember when my friend first got his xbox 360. He was saying how good the graphics were on his HD TV. I went around to have a look and I found that the xbox 360 was still set to SD. :)

Anyways, it was an ok game on the 360. I really had a hard time listening to the voice/character who you spoke with when trying to create a new invention.

But that won't stop the PS3s year old port from dwarfing the current sales of the 360 version. Playstation has the jrpg fanbase and hopefully the sales of this year old port will remind the developers of that so the PS3 gets to be the lead platform from here on out.

I saw the trailer off PSN and it definitely looks good enough to me. I've already pre-ordered and I'm sure many others have too.

Either way... the main character, Edge, still looks like he has no testicles. I'm still buying it though cuz i got addicted to Star Ocean. It's great that most dialogue will be voiced and they added an insane amount of content compared to last years version.

This is a lame port. They let it become blurry instead of using AA properly.

This was pretty much what i expected when i found out that there are no plans to improve on the sub-HD resolutions.

No one can deny the fact that the International version is the superior version though.
-no need to keep swapping disc when changing location

The PS3 version does look alot blurrier, but the PS3 version lighting is far superior. The rain forest comparison shows how much better it is in that respect... both sharpness for 360 and realistic lighting for PS3

starocean was 520p on 360 it was on of the lowest resolution games on the 360, it is upcscaled to 720p.

Both the versions are native 520p and upscaled, get your facts right.

"PS3 set to full range of HDMI, as for 360 image quality of HDMI is set to the maximum."
Meaning the PS3 will go to 720p as all resolutions are checked and 1080p is not being forced, like it is on the 360.
The game in it's native resolution on each respective console runs at a higher resolution on the PS3.

Star Ocean was never about graphics, story, plot progression, memorable characters but the combat. I played SO1 and SO2 and all i wanted to do is kill enemies, get a lot of money for armor and weapons and healing items, and kill bosses.

It was considerably less graphics on the PS3 version from a technical standpoint, but it looked better than the 360 version because of the PS3's hardware.

Besides, I'm kinda skeptical about this site: I just heard of it, (I think it's a website, but I thought it was a site provider, so what's up with that?) and the translator is broken now, so I can't see the site.

360: 1248 x 702 2 x AA in field. 936 x 512 no AA battle

PS3: 1024 x 720 2 X AA in field. 930 x 512 2 x AA battle. PS3's AA method also seems to be a rather dodgy implementation of quincunx, because the textures are blurred wholesale. Ouch. Might as well have not of bothered and preserved resolution.

Neither version is exactly a technical showpiece, and im still shocked how they are barely above SD (e.g wii 720 x 480p) in battle scenes. Pathetic for so called HD gaming

This is what you get when you build a game badly for 360 in the first place, and then port it sloppily onto PS3. OMFG its the worse scenario anyone could imagine.

Mass Effect 2 looks better than any other RPG on consoles.

Blaming the 360 for any perceived lack of quality or content in multi-platform JRPGs is ignorant because PS3 exclusive RPGs like White Knight Chronicles and Folklore don't have any more content or quality than the RPGs on the 360.

Several JRPGs on the 360 have done better than White Knight Chronicles, so you are talking out your 'you know what'.

This comparaison was made by a japanese site /blog whatever ..
And the 2d models exist on 360 on the japanese version only ..
so if he did a comparaison it's fairly reasonnable he used ( according to his pics ) both japanese versions ..and that would explain the 2d avatars since they are in both versions ..

The 3d avatars are in the disgusting us 360 version of the game ( the one with the horrible english voices !)

Ps:( to everyone ) ...star ocean games are fun ..because the main dish is the battle system .. i don't care whose version has more pixels .. what i really want is to battle ..

One this site is list as Microsoft, two SE has said they fix the problems that are in the 360 one.

Keep in mind, the only way to tell if it looks better or not, it by playing both of the games yourself back to back.

I'm betting its going to look better mostly because SE knows that PS3 sells their games well Vs 360. 360 will never sell anything higher then its FPS games.

The Last Hope: International Version
The PS3 version of Star Ocean 4, while coming out a year after its 360 counterpart, at least brings a few highly desirable additions. For one, you can listen to all the game's dialogue in Japanese -- a feature more games should include (It even made me want to play through the game without the voiceacting turned off completely!). And you can swap the game's menus to a brighter, more anime-inspired look. If, like me, you thought the 360's 3D character portraits looked out of place, it's nice to switch over to the original Japanese art.

Minor tweaks to the battle system didn't make a huge difference in my impression of the combat, which is still fun if a bit grindy and button mashy. And visually, there's practically no difference at all between the two games. It might not be a reason to sink in another 40 hours if you've already played through it on 360, but if you held off on getting the game last year, your patience has definitely paid off. The PS3 International version of Star Ocean 4 is undeniably the superior game.

and the graphics r stange because the more lighting the better it looks, sounds dumb but its true. gameplay is fun, and story is different, aside from a certain part that annoyed me.

Both pictures have a huge difference, but as you can see the Charakter Artwork at the bottom left is in a Anime-Style. The Xbox Version only had CG Charakters there and the Anime Art is PS3 exklusive. So both pictures are definatly from the PS3 Version.

Still getting a copy of the game. I'm not playing this for the graphics but for the combat system and story. I didn't buy it for the 360 because of the horrible dubs, but now I have no excuse since the game comes with Japanese voices aka the superior voice acting. I don't mind the extra stuff as well.

I only bought it on ps3 because i have all the other star oceans, but man, these japanese devs are really horrible now a days. I mean this goes for ANY DEVELOPER who can't ratchet out native 720p.

Give me a break. All of you Devs! Meet the Minimum standards for HD. Why do we all have Big TVs? Not to play Wii games, that is for sure.\

Very very disappointed. I hope these shots look worse then it actually is.

it's an JRPG, and if you haven't played it on the 360 then get it on the ps3, simple? problem solved...

but one thing is for damn sure, i AM NOT doing those freaking battle trophies over i don't care what extra toon they add, they can add an elf chick with bigger breast and I still aint doing that shyt over. Point final!
