Is Linux Cheaper on the Desktop Than Windows?

Serverwatch writes:

No, this isn't another rant about how you should convert to Linux because it's free, although it is free. Free is a four-letter word among those who scoff at the mere mention of Linux. Yes, Linux is free, but that doesn't give it an unfair advantage on the desktop because most computers arrive preloaded with Windows - so to the buyer it appears Windows is also free.

I love the fact that I can change just about anything on my PC, at a high level & a low level.

snake-OO6360d ago

windows itself is a virus that messes ur system up, go with linux or mac os

IdleLeeSiuLung6360d ago

I don't know, but I'm far more productive with a Windows system. Put simply everything is easier with Windows and my time is worth so much more than meddling with Linux. Unfortunately, in my position I have to learn Linux and although recognize its flexibility and power, it is no where near ready for prime time due to third party support. OpenOffice is nice, but still has compatibility issues with MS Office.

Bottom line is, the cost of paying for software versus the cost of learning something new is much higher in this case.

jerethdagryphon6360d ago

linux may be free
but windows is better i mean why had a pc that can boot up in 1 minite when you can have one that boots in 10 windows for the win

or not

Proxy6360d ago

So I'll just point out that I've duel booted Vista and Ubuntu on both my laptop and desktop.

In both cases, same hardware, same hard drive, Vista starts faster than Ubuntu. (Then again, I don't have the memory killing side bar enabled either.)

Say what you will, but it's the truth.

Darkseider6360d ago

Let's see.

NO cost = $50 licensing savings on OEM systems (Dell as an example)
FREE Office Suite (Open Office) = $400 savings over Office 2k7 Pro
NO need for AV software (Linux is inherently immune) = $50 savings
NO need for Media Creation Software (K3B, Video Editing software) = $100 savings
NO need for Photoshop (GIMP) = $600 savings

So just off the top of my head $1,200 USD saved.

So yes Linux is in fact cheaper, faster, more stable and secure than Windows on the desktop. It is also as feature rich if not moreso than Windows. Lastly, the biggest thing is that it is OPEN.

IdleLeeSiuLung6360d ago

GIMP is nowhere near the functionality of Photoshop as well as comparing a $400 Office suite, when there is a Home & Student version for 3 PC's around for $80 is not a fair comparison.

There is no doubt there is up-front monetary savings by going open source, but the flip side is that when there are issues (not to mention the learning curve) it is a b!tch to fix i.e. missing drivers, updates not working and etc....

This article is old, some of the mission features have since been added:
Bit depths higher than 8-bit
No CMYK
No colour management (meaning options which allow you to adjust the colours so one image appears the same on one monitor as another).

In short, you literally need to be a professional to benefit from Photoshop. I'm talking about a "oh noes, 16 million colors isn't enough" professional.

Some prefer the interface, and that is fine. I personally don't see why people complain about GIMP. "OH NO! I can't find how to do this..." They're probably so bass-ackwards from using Photoshop that it's impossible for them to understand something so simple as "Right click on the image, it will list ALL your options."

GIMP also has superior scripting abilities. http://www.advogato.org/art...

My family didnt have a choice, i got rid of windows on all computers and put ubuntu on, my grampa (who is now 83) took to it like a duck to water, my mom doesnt want to learn, and my dad doesnt care

Some system administrators use similar approach to trying to force people into using linux.

Lots of people forget what an OS is for. Is designed to run and execute the programs people need or want.

In my computer we have linux web servers, unix servers hosting sybase databases, windows servers, we have Apple desktop for graphic designers who learned to do their job in mac and windows for accountants that use quickbooks, and other who rather use MS office because thats what they are familiar with.

The point of an OS is productivity in order for people to be more efficient.

Some people are just plain stupid and their try to force on people t heir religious believe on the OS they like. Specially anti-microsoft individuals.

Each OS have their strength and weakness but at the end of the day all the OS needs to do is allow the user to click and open the software they need to get the job done.

Here is Darkseider saying that GIMP should be use over Photoshop? I mean... hah! seriously... who named him lord of the people to dictate that people should stop using what they are comfortable with and use an opensource or free software.. because is free?

This is why I made sure every single Linux fanatic got fired from my company... because sometimes they only see black or white... for them linux is the answer to everything...

I remember a user saying, I would like to use excel and word and one of the linux fanatics telling them they should use Google office...
wasting time, money and making people's life miserable.

If a user in my company can be more efficient using a $0.99 cents calculator than with a AlienWare PC and that's what he is familiar with... than what he is going to get.

Lots of linux admins want to force it on people... and the fact is that lots of people don't want it... I mean... linux is free and is only a download away... I have it on my computer just like I have firefox which did not come installed.

If linux is free, easy to use, accessible and available why is not the #1 OS? How did you get it? why can't people do the same?

I mean, why are companies willing to pay Microsoft royalties to pre-install on the PC they sell?

You may want to take a look at other explanations other than conspiracies that people don't have a choice...

Just like IE vs other Browsers... you make a competitive product like firefox and people will use it... period.. not point on crying...

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing74d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9274d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit74d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing74d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9274d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
