People are playing fewer games and new releases are "struggling", Ubisoft warns of falling revenues

"Consumers are playing fewer games, playing them for longer, and as a result, outside of a few notable exceptions, many new games are struggling," say Ubi UK.

"Consumers are playing fewer games, playing them for longer" I don't care about current Ubisoft struggling but I do think this is part of why some people seem to get very little enjoyment out of games anymore.

Stuck in a rut putting long hours into GAAS games instead of fitting in time to play good single player games consistently.

Also, to criticise Ubisoft a bit, if they want more sales, perhaps they should have let their devs make games like Expedition 33. Instead, they had to leave the company to go off and make it.

Serge Hascoët, their prior Chief Creative Officer, was fired for allegations of sexual misconduct. It was a big mistake to allow him to enforce while he was there that most Ubisoft games must follow a similar design.

The issue is that good GaaS is so few and far in between.

For every Arc Raiders, we have 10 Concords 💀

Seraphim58d ago

I don't think it's necessarily GAAS. Games have become so bloated and long... I just spent like 2-3 months playing through Lords of the Fallen 3x. Oddly enough each NG+ run only took a week. I spent like 2 months playing Metaphor Refantazio, etc, etc...

Instead of ripping through a game in 1-2 weeks I'm spending 4-8 weeks with a lot of stuff. All single player titles. As games grow so too does how long players engage with them. Where as during the PS2 era games were about 6-20 hours now games are 50-100+ hours. That's going to eat into sales and it's evident by my own slide in games purchases over a generation. not everything is related to GAAS, but for those who do enjoy that thing, more power to them. Having to decide which game to play next is often a daunting task in a sea of options.

jznrpg57d ago

I played a lot of long games on PS2. It depends on what you are playing.
Many RPGs were very long before and after PS2

robtion58d ago

It may be true. I play single player games only and there just aren't as many good ones now due to resources being allocated to GaaS and many new releases being ruined by 'modern' developers (e.g.new dragon age or Assassins Creed games). I ended up playing 300+ hours of Stellar Blade and 300+ hours of Dragons Dogma 2 instead of those other games.

@robtion
Hey, I’m just going through DD2 right now! Love how you can hire your friends’ pawns for free, at any level. Great use of online imo.

Jingsing58d ago

There are also other factors, cost of living crisis, prices too high and combined with console manufacturers killing the enthusiasm of their bases by having next to no exclusives anymore. They have brought all this upon themselves.

thorstein58d ago

The top stories right now are how Arc Raiders (a $40 game) has a high player count and the Horizon Series selling 40 million copies.

That said, maybe making fewer, better games is a better idea than making lots of crappy ones.

*People are playing fewer games made by Ubisoft.

robtion58d ago

Yep. Turns out if you make bloated grindfests filled with modern internet politics and microtransactions fewer people will play your games.

jambola58d ago

excuse you
ubisoft says the microtransactions make the game more fun

Rebel_Scum59d ago

People might be playing fewer Ubisoft games but I dont know if that headline is true for the entire industry.

shinXseijuro59d ago

Can’t recall the last Ubisoft game I bought and played … them boys really fell off . I think my last Ubisoft game was splinter cell conviction on Xbox 360

RaiderNation58d ago

My last Ubisoft purchase was Rayman Legends.

BABI-PANGPANG58d ago

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown for me. And before that probably Assassin's Creed: Origins, which I didn't finish because it became a bit too repetitive at some point.

jambola58d ago

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora
ans it changed how I purchase new games forever with how bad it was

Killer2020UK59d ago

If I had a dime for every time Ubisoft blamed the consumer for their own failings, I'd have enough money to fund a quadruple A game myself.

Rockstar launches official marketplace for mods

Rockstar has launched an official marketplace for "every server and every player" to buy mods: Cfx Marketplace.

I wonder how much of this isn't just taken work of others who have modded for free.

Edit: Also, great way for R* to take popular ideas and build them into GTAVI based on demand.

fr0sty6h ago

What I see happening here is, R* is going to ban mods in GTA6 UNLESS you buy them from the marketplace and R* then gets a cut of that sale.

ActualWhiteMan8h ago

Ah, perfect timing with them taking down the Bully online fan mod. Greedy a$$ company.

Christopher6h ago

It's okay as long as they get a cut of the money.

fr0sty6h ago

Expect R* to force it on you.

Snookies1213m ago

Yep, right there with you. I'll happily donate to a mod creator if it looks really cool, or if I enjoy it. But expecting payment up front? Nope, not touching it.

IanTH5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

I'm not entirely sure how to read this, as it doesn't seem exactly like an exact parallel to Bethesda's paid mods shenanigans.

Rather than single player stuff, this appears to be aimed solely on Cfx Servers. From what I've gleaned, apparently Rockstar bought the Cfx mod team several years ago, coming a few years after weird contentions led them to ban a few of their members. Ultimately, the question is if they plan to keep this contained to only online/servers.

I have to guess to a degree yes. It'd be pretty hard to "force" paid mods for single player when modding files locally on your own machine, but much easier for servers they'll control. So perhaps this is their soft launch ahead of GTA6 online and they'll clamp down more tightly on non-official servers going forward? Ever since they've become a 1 or 2 property studio, I haven't really cared much for Rockstar stuff, so I'm not entirely up on everything surrounding this. Sounds like it has the potential to be problematic further down the line, but right now fairly easy to ignore...I think lol.

Kotick Made $155 million from MS in the buyout, the little b*tch needs to stop whining. Thanks to this Microslop deal and massive industry consolidation thousands upon thousands of devs and other workers lost their livelihoods. This greedy piggie pervert needs shut up and f-off.
