I really have to wonder why.

Let’s be honest, there isn’t a single Xbox Series game that doesn’t have a PC version at this point. Every major release from this generation is already on PC in one way or another. So when we talk about the Series consoles, the only real thing Microsoft needs to do is expand the Play Anywhere program. If the games I bought on my Series S became playable on my PC or on an Xbox-branded handheld like the Ally, that would practically be the same thing as running Xbox games.

Things only start to get complicated when we look at the older Xbox consoles. But even then, there are ways around it. The Xbox One has a very small library of exclusives that never made it to PC. Realistically, the only two big ones are Halo 5 and Rare Replay, and both could easily be ported over. The rest are mostly Kinect titles, which no one seriously expects to work on PC, delisted games like Forza Motorsport 5, or failure titles like Crimson Dragon.

If we go further back, the Xbox 360 and the original Xbox have a much larger catalog of exclusives. But even on current hardware, backwards compatibility is already very limited. Only a small number of games actually work, and even fewer are still available for purchase. Considering that modern Xbox systems are now fully digital, I really don’t see Microsoft putting that much effort into making those older titles compatible.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love to be able to play Otogi and Blue Dragon natively on my Windows PC. But I really don’t think there are enough people who would care to justify it. Especially when Microsoft can make those games available through streaming instead.

The play anywhere program already supports over 1000 games and growing. Not sure what you mean by "expand"

Vits205d ago

It’s not really that complicated.

Microsoft says this Asus device is an Xbox. The complain from consumer is that, for it to really be a Xbox it should play Xbox games. But here is the problem: to actually play Xbox games, the device has to either translate or emulate a Xbox system, and that is hard to do.

However, Microsoft has a very easy way to make the device feel more like an Xbox. Many games are available on both Xbox and PC. With Play Anywhere, if someone buys the game on one platform, they also get it on the other for free. If Microsoft expanded this program to include every game available on both platforms, which today is almost every new release, they could make the Asus device feel practically like a Xbox.

So when I say “expanding,” I don’t mean having just over 1,000 games. I mean EVERY single game that is available on both the Xbox Series and the Xbox PC Store.

Neonridr205d ago

@Vits - but every single new first party game supports this system. So what games are you asking to be included that aren't already there?

here's a list if you are curious which games support it.

https://www.trueachievement...

For example, recent 1st party games like Indiana Jones, Doom: The Dark Ages, Gears of War Reloaded, etc. are all there, as is almost every Microsoft release aside from some much older titles.

Microsoft has zero say on 3rd party devs supporting the system however, so if you are expecting games like Borderlands 4 to support it, that isn't up to Microsoft here.

There is a slew of OG and 360 bc games that aren't part of the play anywhere program. Perhaps that is what Vits meant by expanding?

I mean it would be nice to be able to load up the ones i have currently associated with my SX. Ones i have been collecting over the years from GWG and other digital purchases. If MS can somehow make 360 and OG emulation possible on a XBO/SX... then that same emulator they use should be compatible with the Ally X or other Windows PC devices.

Neonridr205d ago

@darthv72 - that's fair, that makes sense. Perhaps there is a way for them to do this.

Vits205d ago (Edited 205d ago )

I'm not talking only about first-party games, I'm talking about all games. Again, the whole point is for this device to be an Xbox, and for that, it has to run every game that Xbox has, not only it's "exclusives". We're already excusing them with backwards compatibility titles, so the least they should do is offer 100% of the shared library on Play Anywhere.

Ah, but they can't force third parties to join the system? Well, they definitely can if they choose to. And even without antagonizing their partners, they could make it worth their while, like reducing their profit share to 20% for every game that releases on the program, offer another incentive, etc.

Oh but they can't do that because reasons. Well, then case closed it's not a Xbox and will never be a Xbox.

The why is the hope to maintain their ecosystem on any device. They must continue to promote their ecosystem everywhere and entice people on consoles with bringing their library over to a new device rather than rebuying on PC.

Exthun205d ago

The problem releate to people who bought the game on Xbox and don't have anywhere label on it. They has to buy the game again same for 360 games.

Tapani204d ago

Yeah I can't play my Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon on the Ally X today, so that's a no-go. Once they introduce Xbox emulation, and if I can rip my game CDs/DVDs that I have and play them via the emulation, that would be awesome. I've been holding on to those copies for 10+ years for this moment lol Not going to buy a Series X for those two games only... (already got the PS5 and PS3 for the full PS library and Switch, 3DS, Vita, and GameBoy Advance for legacy stuff. And a gaming PC that is 3x the performance vs Series X).

Okay well this is good news for those worried about compatibility if true. Also, it means that the future of Xbox will be PC. I am interested to see how they scale performance. And how they deal with physical media.

So Finally Gears 2,3&3.5, Fable 2 and Halo 5 on PC?

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing13d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit13d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing13d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
