I Can't Believe I'm Saying This But Donkey Kong Bananza Is More Like GTA Than Super Mario Odyssey

The chaotic freeform style of Donkey Kong recalls the do nothing, feel everything stylings of GTA.

"the do nothing, feel everything stylings of GTA" is not something I've ever experienced. I'm well aware I'm one of a truly small group that doesn't enjoy GTA, but I fell for the GTA4 hype and bought in Day 1. It was a useful lesson to trust my gut over even universal acclaim.

I've just never clicked with it, and I found the myriad mechanics - while impressive in their quantity - didn't really feel good in isolation. Jack of all trades, master of none kinda deal. Perhaps the reason I've never clicked with it is partially down to that "make your own fun" aspect of the game. Because the core gameplay never grabbed me, and I generally didn't "feel everything"; disappointment I couldn't see what othes did, but generally being limited to being impressed with the scope and ambition, but still left wanting.

Wow, I feel sorry for you dude. GTA4 was one of the best games ever made.

On topic, the comparison between DK and GTA is intentionally stupid media shill headline.

DodoDojo197d ago

Nah the gameplay was arse. The least little bump would have you stumbling and falling for 3 minutes straight, the car mechanics were awful and it had only a 4th of the weapons and vehicles as the other games.

I’m with you dude. The games just aren’t that fun to play. The idea of what you’re doing is fun, but mechanically, it just feels kinda basic and a bit rough. Especially the PS2 games, those were jank as all hell. 4 and 5 are good, and the physics engine made things a lot more fun (I wish they’d do more with it), but I don’t really go back and replay them. I don’t think I even finished them, they get incredibly repetitive.

I will never understand how anyone could play GTA 3 or Vice City on ps2 and not hate it. On pc you could atleast aim but on console it was this terrible auto-aim system that didn't work at all. Any encounter was pure luck unless you could find a way to clear it using a car. Roaming the city while listening to radio was cool though.

Its really not. What an idiotic take

The_Blue198d ago

The term "like GTA" is annoying.

Benjaminkno198d ago

More like Red faction and odyssey combined

Best Platformer of 2025

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "2025 was a banner year for platformers, particularly action-platformers. Donkey Kong Bananza thrilled fans with its clever traversal and deforming mechanics; Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound elevated nostalgic NES ideas with modern designs and controls; The Rogue Prince of Persia blended 2D parkour with story-driven progression; and Shinobi: Art of Vengeance made a splash thanks to its deep combat framework and fluid movement."

Absolum chose a terrible year to release, its such a fun game but massively overshadowed by the big hitters from 2025.

The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, No Sleep for Kaname Date, Shuten Order, Doom: The Dark Ages and The Outer Worlds 2 are the GOATs.

Seraphim13d ago

didn't even realize No Sleep for Kaname Date released last year.... I stumbled on a [console] pre-order for it the other night and immediately placed an order. guess I should check Steam a little more often lol.

Anyway, the two previous AI: The Somnium Files games are excellent so looking forward to another journey. Also a great reminder of why one should step out of their comfort zone from time to time. might love it, enjoy it, hate it or anything in between, but one won't know until they step outside their gaming walls and give something different a try.

That's what The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy is for. It's from the creator of Danganronpa and the creator of AI: The Somnium Files. It took me 400 to complete all 22 routes and 100 endings. Best gaming experience I've had since the 80's.

Seraphim13d ago

thanks, I'll have to check out The Hundred Line
