Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves (PS5) Review – Return To Southtown | The Outerhaven

The Outerhaven reviews the SNK's Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, the follow-up we've all been waiting for. It's a fantastic game with some online concerns, but easily one of the best fighting games released in a while.

Sounds good, although I don't see how Mark of the Wolves playead it safe when every character apart from Terry was brand new.

That was precisely one of the concerns, keeping Terry but adding a completely new cast, with a lot of characters that the FGC felt were "gimmicky". It also removed a lot of mechanics from other Fatal Fury games; Two-lane switching was removed, they trimmed down the inputs, and most of the mechanics were simplified. The animation was also "flat" compared to SF3, and it was mostly the same as the last games. Where, compared to SF3, Capcom took some major risks adding the parry system, giving characters multiple super arts per each character (I wasn't the biggest fan at first), juggles that added flash and more damage if you could pull them off, perhaps the best visuals and animation seen in a 2D fighter for a very long time.

Comparing Garuo vs SF3, there's where people pointed out that SNK played it safe.

Is Kenshiro one of the mystery characters, or is he separate from this?

Best Fighting Game of 2025

VGChartz: "All of the franchises that tend to dominate the genre, at least in terms of mass appeal and sales, forwent brand new releases in 2025, which left the field truly wide open for smaller series to come in and stake a claim to the trophy. Crossovers and new entries in dormant franchises were the main themes of this year's shortlist."

The only serious contender for that title is the game with Terry Bogard.

Unless any of those "new games" involves a proper Metal Slug game or bringing back some of their old classics in a new fresh coat of paint (Shock Troopers, Blazing Star, Crossed Swords, Sengoku, Ninja Commando), my interests remain tepid. It's far more likely another one of their old fighting games will be brought back in full 3D such as The Last Blade 3 or SNK vs. Capcom 3.
