First Impressions: Windows 7 Beta

Ammonator writes, "Let me get this out of the way first. I am not a Microsoft fanboy, I am a fanboy of a cohesive user experience that emphasizes form over function, but not at the expense of the function. I have been using Vista Ultimate for almost two years and eagerly look forward to Windows 7. And when it was finally available I downloaded the Beta, and did a fresh install on my Dell Latitude D630 which has a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2 GB Ram, 80 GB 7200 RPM HD, and a Quadro NVS 135M GPU. Now that you know a little about my history and what machine I am testing on, let's jump into the Beta preview.

I decided to take the plunge and install the 64-bit version of Windows 7 because I was in an adventurous mood and figured this would allow me to better evaluate how far Microsoft has come with their 64-bit OS. Installation was quick and painless and the initial configuration of the OS was simple. It has been said that first impressions are key when experiencing anything new. And my first impressions with the new Windows OS are quite favorable..."

I wonder if this is the Windows release that will move me away from OS X? I loved XP, hate Vista. This OS is getting a lot of critical buzz already, though...

CrAppleton6327d ago

I don't think Vista is THAT bad once you get around to spending time with it.. But XP was WAAAAAAY better.. so who knows.. maybe this will be worth it

bgrundman6327d ago

I think this is a step in the right direction... away from vista.

bgrundman6327d ago

XP also had its problems to begin with, it was just given time to work out all of the bugs... Microsoft is just going to abandon Vista like they did Windows ME. It is kind of sad, because there is alot of potential there that will be unfulfilled

ammonator6327d ago

As a switcher from Windows XP Pro to OSX to Vista Ultimate and now Win 7 Beta, I recommend it! While I think OSX is easy to use and a great OS, the application compatibility got to me in the long run. And I have yet to have any serious issues in Win7.

bgrundman6327d ago

Sounds like you need to make up your mind and stick with an operating system... good lord man!

CrAppleton6327d ago

True.. then again.. EVERYTHING that microsoft puts out has issues to begin with

ammonator6327d ago (Edited 6327d ago )

I'm sure most of the users on this site are guilty of it sometime or another. I've had friends try several Linux distros a week, so I don't think I'm that bad.

CrAppleton6327d ago

I'm so tired of having a new version of windows every other year (just about).. seriously.. when are they going to get it right? I thought Vista was supposed to be the savior?? lol

bgrundman6327d ago

Vista is a solid OS, it is just that people are not giving it a chance. Once the public says that it is bad, expect everyone else to echo it. :(

ammonator6327d ago

I agree with bgrundman, I used Vista as my primary OS for two years without any major issues. Win7 just builds on the success of Vista.

bgrundman6327d ago

From what I understand, it is a streamlined version of the Vista kernel under the hood anyway.

CrAppleton6327d ago

It's VERY user friendly.. and I think that's just something most PC heads aren't used to

Kushan6326d ago

Every other year? Vista was released in 2006, 7 will be later this year, that's 3 years. Vista came out 5-6 years after XP. What are you even complaining about?
Apple puts out a "new" OSX every 18months or something and some linux distributions are released every 6 months, it's absolutely unrealistic for you to think that anyone could release a PERFECT Operating System. In this industry, things are outdated before they even get out the door, just deal with it.

I skipped right over Vista. Still using my old Sony Viao from almost 5 years ago. I wonder if I'll skip right over Windows 7 as well? Probably won't start new a OS until I have a new laptop...

bgrundman6327d ago

The specs aren't that high, but I doubt it will operate on a machine that is that old.

Theoneneo816326d ago

I have Windows 7 on my VM mac osx and default it had 512mb of ram and it ran very Well Vista was a crawl even on 1gig of ram for vm i think people will be surprise on how well 7 will run on older machines

bgrundman6327d ago

Simple Question, Windows 7 or OSX?

ammonator6327d ago

Right now, Windows 7. But I will wait for Snow Leopard before passing final judgment.

bgrundman6327d ago

Snow Leopard does look damn sexy... guess I will have to wait and see, for now anyway.

Theoneneo816327d ago

i do have to say ive been running windows 7 under vm ware and it runs on vm ware really good its actaully the fastest out of the 3 windows OS'es being Windows XP and Vista i do think Windows 7 will be a much more polish update from XP than the piece of trash vista was. and i am looking forward to snowleopard to being that it will be intel only i think it can be the best out of the mac os'es as well.

You can get Hall effect controllers slightly cheaper, but you'd struggle to find as feature-rich a package without some heavy, heavy sales.

I fail to see how this is AI shhhhlllloooop. Looking at the different games they showed, this has made many of them look far better.

isarai_lee52d ago (Edited 52d ago )

It's AI slop because it ignores the artists intent and changes the details ESPECIALLY when it comes to character faces. The scariest part of it is introducing it as the next stage of DLSS, a feature where the current iteration already has controversy surrounding it and for quite a lot of games cannot be fully disabled. So reasonably the precident is already set for what path this could take, and it's not good

blacktiger52d ago

In case you didn't watch the video then let me point just one part. It overrides the lighting. Then the question of what is the point of ray tracing cost and so on. Many of the lighting deletes shadow, including shadow on the face like eyes even chin.

Chard52d ago

Why stop at art when it comes to human input - why not just have AI play the game for us, remove human input altogether

theshizer52d ago

If you don’t like it, just don’t enable it. Personally I think it looks great from the videos I have seen.

isarai_lee52d ago

And what about when you can't? Cause there's plenty of games where you cannot fully disable dlss already, i mean we're well into an era where it's a major crutch for developers to cover up their cut corners, why would this be any different?

blacktiger52d ago

You are playing with people's money and allow Nvidia to scam you.

In case you didn't watch the video then let me point just one part. It overrides the lighting. Then the question of what is the point of ray tracing cost. This is all lie to raise the cost of the graphic card.

Andrew33652d ago

Making characters look more realistic not ok because we want the developer to decide on how the game was intended to look. - Internet

Change entire game through mods thus changing how the developers intended the game to be is ok. - Internet

isarai_lee52d ago

Something consumers can do to a product after they have purchased it, entirely optional and can always be undone with a fresh install

VS

The leading gaming hardware manufacturer making this the next iteration of the main AA/Upscaling technique that is heavily relied upod by modern devs and is not optional in most games.

Not at all the same but nice try

jwillj2k452d ago

At the moment you need 2 5090’s just to get an image on the screen so this is all vaporware until proven otherwise.

Andrew33652d ago

The good news is you can just not use it as well.

Christopher52d ago

It's all about choice in the end. But, I would say that calling it 'more realistic' is quite a stretch. It looks like AI art, and that's rarely realistic.

Urrakia3452d ago

All the comments I see are reminding me of how we got to the current state of gaming when microtransactions were first introduced: "It's completely optional guys, we promise! If you don't like it just don't buy it!"

I think we all know how that ended up.

Popsicle52d ago (Edited 52d ago )

I had the same exact thought the first time this was brought up in a separate article about a week ago. Took me straight back to the conversations surrounding “horse armor.” Just don’t buy it they said. Years later, many IPs I previously enjoyed are so infected with monetization schemes that I don’t even consider purchasing them anymore.

DLSS 5 and the like are the same thing wrapped in a different package. History rhymes but many of us never learn from it.

blacktiger52d ago

Biggest Scam. Overrides lighting and shadow. So why keep Ray tracing? It's all a scam to raise graphic card. We now see Nvidia with Microsoft downturn anything against them. Sony is next!
