FromSoftware Promises More Elden Ring Updates, Unsure Why It's More PopularThan Dark Souls

FromSoftware promises more Elden Ring updates are on they way! Studio boss Hidetaka Miyazaki admits he's not sure why it's way more popular than Dark Souls.

Lightning Mr Bubbles1302d ago

I don't know why it's more popular either, it's mostly just a rehash of Dark Souls but open world. I think the popularity comes from the hype, FromSoftware picked up a reputation with the Dark Souls series, so naturally there's a good chance their next games will have a lot of hype around them.

I think there's more to it than that. I've played many of the SoulsBorne series and never got into them. I haven't fallen for hype since I bought into GTA IV after being sure I wasn't going to care for it, bought it Day 1, played a bit, and was reaffirmed to trust my gut over perfect scores and overwhelming praise.

As for Elden, I wasn't even going to play it, even after all the hype, under the assumption I wouldn't like it. A friend bought it for me, and it ended up being one of my favorite games of at least of this generation.

I think it's probably a mix of things. It is more approachable for more people, especially with added summons to help take some of the aggro. If you get stuck on someone, you can move on and come back later. You aren't stuck in on a level with nothing else to do but beat your head against a wall to see the rest of the game.

There's a true sense of discovery as you roam the map. Generally you are given something of at least modest interest at the end of whatever place you happen upon. It's kind of like how Skyrim felt in a way (though with immensely better combat lol). Where there was so much to do or see littered around the map that it felt organic. It felt like you were exploring a world, not a game level.

I think it is also one of those rare times where things come together in such a way as to be tough to replicate in the future. You could put all the same pieces together and get something decent, but there does feel like it might be one of those rare special cases where the intangibles add up to more than the sum of their parts.

And it was their first open world game so naturally…

SyntheticForm1301d ago

ER has the endgame, build experimentation factor that DS simply cannot match. The build potential combined with PVP give huge replay value the likes of which was never seen in a DS game.

Chriswynnetbh1301d ago

ER has less pvp options in terms of invasions and build diversity is awful compared to other souls games thanks to how op magic is.

REDGUM1301d ago

I disagree, each to thier own in mind though.
I think it's more popular not only because it's open world but that it doesn't force you to take a direction at all. I couldn't & just didn't get into the dark souls games at all, just not for me. I'm a casual gamer because of timeframe issues & being older but feel like Elden Ring is kind to those players too as it's less linear overall. I'm hooked on it. Plated just over 85hrs now, three trophies so far (heaaaaps to go) massive open world, years before I finish this game, much like Bloodborne but loving every moment in it. I feel it's a free'r game to play and therefore attracts more players. I love it, I really do.

"but open world"

As if that was something irrelevant. In Elden Ring exploration and sense of discovery is just as important as the combat wich wasn't the case for Dark Souls that guided the players through an established path. This is a significant addition to the Demon's/Dark Souls formula as it gives a level of player agency that previous FromSoftware games didn't have and because Elden Ring is open world design done right, it pushes player agency to a level that very few games have reached. Such a level of player agency means that Elden Ring can offer an experience that is tailor-made for anyone that plays it and that's one of the biggest reasons why it is so popular.

ElvisHuxley1301d ago

Doubt it. I never got into dark souls that much, but am absolutely loving this game. If it were a "rehash" as you claim, I don't see this being true.

-Foxtrot1301d ago (Edited 1301d ago )

Not really, the hype for this was completely justified in the end

They've done an open world really well which feels different from other open world games. Okay so groundbreaking or revolutionary? No no but enough where it's not a cookie cutter open world game.

I found the lore to be interesting and a little bit easier to follow than Dark Souls, I mean a bunch of names all sounding similar is f****** annoying don't get me wrong but I managed to grasp everything in the end unlike Dark Souls where I wasn't always 100% clear.

Not to mention I always found really interesting things wherever I went, the challenge was there and it always felt good every time I progressed. It was a game where I couldn't wait to finish work to get home to continue playing it.

It's not a perfect game, there's a fair few things I'd like them to improve like I do think it needs a small quest tracker, something that tells you how far you are and if there's any side quests you've locked yourself out from. I think it would be good if there wasn't many repeated bosses in the dungeons and I felt Torrent should have gotten some upgrades so you could make him faster, let him triple jump, take more fall damage and go faster. However despite this, it's a fantastic game.

I think it’s only more popular because it’s open world.. people was just curious of what it would be like a souls game open world and the reviews all was 10s , so everyone just bought it.

Its open world, easier, and dark souls built up a lot of rep for you guys lol. Jeff, many influencers and gaming news companies did a good job advertising the game too. George is another good reason.

It's well deserved.

From Soft made one of the best games ever.. unsure why it's so popular xD stay humble guys you're awesome

It has to be the GRRM writing credit that blew it up.

Don't underestimate the power of attaching a mainstream name to a game.

excaliburps1302d ago

Really, really doubt that. Out of anyone I know who played this, no one has ever mentioned GRR. Heck, most don't even know he's involved.

VersusDMC1302d ago

Mentioned in every trailer and used as a selling point by my gamestop cashier who probably told everyone you asked about the game...

babadivad1301d ago

I didn't know he had anything to do with this game until I read this comment thread.

OneLove1302d ago

If you do open world right, then it will always be more popular.

jBlakeeper1301d ago

So very true. Of course people are going to jump all over an open world souls game. But he doesn’t know why it’s more popular. Very humble guy indeed.
