Remembering Midway

Peter Skerritt muses:

"Tuesday's distressing Midway news sounded like a death knell. More layoffs. Game cancellations. Attempts to spin a bad situation into a not-so-bad situation. Frankly, Midway's demise has been a painful one for me to watch because of the company's nostalgic bond to me. So many Midway coin-ops ate my quarters and tokens while growing up (and beyond)."

I love Midway.. I hope they don't go under!

killyourfm6398d ago

I think they already have...25% is a drastic number. And for them to focus on their existing IP's isn't necessarily saying much. The Midway of old would have survived. Not sure about the new Midway :-(

bgrundman6398d ago

Midway is nothing more than a shell of what it was. I just hope this tailspin is not permanent.

Who knows.. companies have come back from worse situations before..

Those classic Coin-Ops helped define a generation of games. I wish they would tap back into that now.

Neco5126398d ago

ya they did help define gaming

Sad dark days. Oh Pac Man, how I miss you. And Miss Pac Man, a sequel that other sequels look up to...

bgrundman6398d ago

Miss Pac Man is the first spouse that was ever featured in a sequel... a true groundbreaker :P

CrAppleton6398d ago

For sure.. this is terrible

bgrundman6398d ago

Did Midway recently claim that they had a game that looked as good, if not better than Gears of War 2?

killyourfm6398d ago

That doesn't ring a bell. But totally possible. Midway's problem recently though, has been poor/uninspired gameplay.

roblef6398d ago

Dunno. Is it really bad news? what if Midway just wasn't putting out any good games anymore? ;)

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

Scissorman68d ago

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
