Elden Ring is a surprisingly brilliant "only forward" game

From Eurogamer: "I am by no means a Souls expert. The opposite really. I played Dark Souls a bit and loved it - but I also struggled with it, as a foolish, cowardly, flighty kind of person and player. By the time I almost knew what I was doing - or rather, by the time I started to make any kind of real progress - I had started to play in a very specific way.

So specific I can almost remember the physical sensation of it. Most of the time, I played Dark Souls as if my head had been partway retracted into my shoulders. Sunken neck, everything tense, slow, tortoise-style forward movement, always expecting the blow on the head, always expecting the ground to fall out from beneath me. Which, granted, it sometimes did."

FromSoftware has my utmost respect.

Imalwaysright1418d ago

In my opinion it's currently the best studio in the world.

Muigi1418d ago

You must not own a PC or next gen console lol.

darksky1418d ago

They may have struck gold with the Dark Souls genre but they certainly aren't skilled enough to be classed as the best. The archaic game engine and mechanics used in their latest game are not exactly state of the art. Your character can't even climb a small wall in Elden Ring..

Let's see them create a brand new engine that beats UE5 or Frostbite before calling them the best.

Imalwaysright1418d ago

I have a PC with a RTX 3070 and a ryzen 5600x.

Do you think that your criteria of what makes a good studio will change my opinion? FromSoftware made my two favorite games of the 7th gen: Demon's and Dark Souls. Bloodborne is in my top 5 best games of the 8th gen. I'm currently playing Elden Ring and I'm at work thinking on what I have to do to overcome some of the challenges it poses me. When a game has me this obssessed then I know that I'm playing a masterpiece so I honestly couldn't care less about your criteria.

Muigi1418d ago

@imalwaysright So you should know how shitty the PC port is but hey people’s standards these days…

Imalwaysright1418d ago

Muigi

Aside from a few framerate drops here and there so far I haven't experienced any other technical difficulties and considering that I played Demon's and especially Dark Souls on my PS3 and I still find them to be the best games of that generation you should be able to tell that I also don't give a damn about your standards.

Muigi1418d ago

@imalwaysright I wouldn’t you expect you to care that would make you a simp…are you a simp?

Redrex70001418d ago

I guess.... i mean they do stay true to there Vision
maybe?

As good as the game is if they were the best studio in the world they would have optimised it better. It hovers around 45 fps at 1080p with early PS4 graphics. Blueprint managed to get a beautiful looking DS to 1440 at a solid 60.

ScootaKuH1417d ago (Edited 1417d ago )

They can craft a world, definitely, but they need to learn how to optimise their game engines. They can only reasonably be deemed the best studio in the world if they are capable of delivering the whole package, and with Elden Ring they fail. Great game, but the current state of the game - especially on PC - leave a lot to be desired.

I'm playing on PS5 and while I love the art style I do think that graphically it's like an early PS4 game at times, and even in performance mode the framerate isn't exactly stable. Nothing game breaking but I think we've all come to expect more nowadays.

UltimateOwnage1417d ago

I’m playing on PC as well, and the game is so much more the I expected. It’s like Elder Souls of the Wild, and I can’t stop playing. 3080 Ti / AMD 5900x, buttery smooth 21:9 with DLDSR at 5120x2160 using Flawless Ultrawide mod. No issues other than a rare stutter. Using Dual Sense with Steam and jt plays awesome. Absolutely loving it. I’m sure PC specs make a difference on the PC related issues, but it is running nearly flawless for me on Windows 11. I hope they fix it up so it runs better on slow machines so that more gamers can enjoy it. It’s a gem.

Sure and there are many other studios out there that should learn how to craft games that offer me the same experience that FromSoftware games do. Yesterday I finally managed to kill Maigret or whatever his name was and when I did it I literally closed my fist and yelled a roar of victory. The last time I experienced that feeling was with another FromSoftware game so what do I care about the optimization in other games when none of them are even close to be able to give me this experience? I'll take FromSoftware games with a few technicall issues over other games that are better optimised but aren't able to give me that experience and FromSoftware aren't just masters at providing that feeling. They mastered a lot of specific things in game design and when you add them up then you have a studio that is on a level of its own.

FinalFantasyFanatic1417d ago

I actually prefer their Armored Core games, I miss that franchise so much, I hate how they're forever making Demon/Dark Souls type games now.

stayed up until 5:30 AM and completely ruined my week to play Elden Ring some more

worth it

Aussiesummer1418d ago

Same, feeling like shit, looking like shit but damn I gotta see what's around that corner man then I'll go to bed.

roadkillers1418d ago

That’s what I thought. Haven’t bought, but watched hours of gameplay and came to the same conclusion

Agent751417d ago

So, another copy and paste game then?

Traecy1417d ago

Basically with some additional things...an open world & a horse but every thing else is basically the same just with some name changes.

MrChow6661416d ago

Do you even like video games?

HansyJ1417d ago

What’s your point though? Obviously it’s in the same breath of those games it is a souls game. It is much bigger, deeper, and more engaging than those games. It is a fantastic experience that I recommend anyone who is into such a genre to try. Obviously it’s not for everybody but if you don’t like the previous souls games you obviously won’t like this one and if you like the other ones you’ll think this is absolutely fantastic. Yes a lot of the same mechanics but it’s such And enthralling experience that cannot be explained without diving in yourself

Traecy1417d ago (Edited 1417d ago )

I've played Bloodborne,DS3,DS2 & Sekiro & now Elden Ring. Besides Sekiro all those games I mentioned especially DS2 & 3 they basically play the same, having the same style, gameplay mechanics & formula. Besides the game having a horse, for me it's basically nothing mind blowing fresh or new...is all I'm saying.

Nacho_Z1418d ago

Really enjoyed the read thanks for that. I play every Souls game like a tortoise, I find the heaviest armour and the biggest shield and hide behind them, it's not very exciting or brave but it does work.

Welshy1417d ago

Whatever works for you, you go for it.

That's why I like the souls games so much, you're not railroaded into playing any one way, which helps with accessibility contrary to what people say. Plus the benefit of an insane amount of replayability going into new saves with completely different gear and styles.

I honestly believe if you can get through any Ass Creed or Skyrim type game, with a little bit of patience everyone can beat the souls games.

Agent751417d ago

Run about, hack and slash, fight a boss, enter and castle or a cave, smash some barrels. Am l missing something here?

CorndogBurglar1417d ago

You can minimalize any game the way you just minimalized Elden Ring....

HansyJ1417d ago

Yeah…. A Fantastic experience

By the way, Isn't it amazing that the person playing in the video is an expert Elden Ring player? XD

What a name for a title with bad performance right now. Yup Tarnished Edition is about right. They made the right choice to delay this game.
