Why Elden Ring should have an assist mode

TSA writes: Difficulty in video games is a controversial topic, and for years there have been two sides to the argument. There are those people who want to ensure difficult games remain difficult, so that developers retain their freedom of expression and the game is enjoyed the way it was originally intended. On the other side there are those who say video games should be opened up to an even wider crowd, introducing more options to adjust how a game plays depending on someone’s skill level.

Have these halfwits ever consider that maybe the difficulty is part of the overall gaming narrative? Tetris is TETRIS because of the difficulty. As is Mario. If it took two stomps to kill an enemy in Mario it would change the narrative. It takes one because it’s supposed to. It’s telling a story. That story being - Mario is strong enough to crush a koopa with a single stomp. He is however, not strong to do the same to a turtle. Or a boss.

As an author, this comes through so clearly for me. These journalist suck.

kenpachi1886d ago

I thought all these " game journalists" were real Gamers like most of the articles suggests if that's the case then wouldn't be asking for this.

Celeste and the Souls-series are 2 different types of games though.
This is why we have reviews, If the game looks too difficult for you, don't buy/play. Why waste development time on making it accessible? Remember the feeling of dying 20+ times on bosses (toughing it out to perfect your strategy) and finally killing'em.

You remove accomplishments when you are curating your own easy mode experience.

"Why waste development time on making it accessible."

Because accessibility is a good thing.

"Journalists" hijacked this debate long ago for their own BS reasons, but game accessibility is never a waste of resources for those who actually rely on them.

But instead of focusing on that overlooked group, it's turned into a debate about skill level instead of actual accessibility. This article is a good example of that BS.

But hopefully they just put it on PC like Sekiro, and modders can do their thing again for people who want to enjoy this game but otherwise can't.

Eamon1886d ago

Elden Ring is confirmed to come to PC.

I don't think this debate should be such a big deal. It's up to From Software if they want to do an easy mode or not. A lot of developers create difficulty modes primarily for business reasons. Nintendo included easy modes in Mario games because they know that children (or rather parents-of-children) are an important part of their target customer base. From Software could probably it more accessible but their game design philosophy, and the fact they have a sizable-enough loyal customer base, means they don't have to compromise on their vision.

Atom6661886d ago

I'll never buy into the "compromise vision" argument. Souls games aren't special just because of their difficulty. Plus, they're not even that difficult.

The fact that you can just mod them on PC or use a simple trainer shows that altering the difficulty has no effect on that "vision."

Same as cheat codes didn't make any old-school games less brutal.

I do agree that it's for business reasons. That "reputation" is what they care about. While I get that, it doesn't mean their games are better for it. And smart business decisions do not have to be exclusive of providing options for those with cognitive or physical barriers preventing them from enjoying the product.

It's not about soccer moms enjoying gaming for me. But good news on the PC front.

As we've seen for decades, individuals with I/DD and physical handicaps have better options for accessibility on PC because of the tools available. It's just disappointing that it's often the only option (can be pricey too), and too few people and "media" can get past the accessibility = low skill level.

Eamon1886d ago

Often in their games, the beginning of the game is harder than the late-game. I feel this is the magic of their games. Bloodborne probably had the hardest opening hours of all their games and yes it can really make you want to give up and move on. But honestly, that is FromSoft's vision. That's how they want to design the game. Dark Souls and Bloodborne are both set in this bleak end-of-civilization moment where there is no hope and everything is lost. The brutal difficulty at the beginning definitely makes you feel this. And when you get better and slowly get the right build and stats, the game starts to get a lot more manageable. The games are slow burn and not about instant gratification as is 99% of videogames.

They're also inspired by old classic games like Castlevania series that were also brutally punishing. This is the thing a lot of people forget is that games before the age of 3D were often very punishing and left the play to figure out how to progress by themselves. Part of the reason is because games were pretty short and needed a way to lengthen the overall experience.

People who are adding mods are doing that themselves. The developer made the game they wanted and you have bought it - so you are free to do with it as you wish. I only ever add graphical enhancement mods myself as I almost always want to play a game as the developer intended.

Atom6661886d ago

You're not saying anything regarding the difficulty of the Souls games that I haven't seen discussed regarding countless other games. You're also just reiterating stuff that nobody disagrees with, really.

And, yes, mods are users altering the game. Question is: does it change how you feel about those games to know someone else might be playing it in a different way? Does it change your experience in any way?

I don't think it does.

It also doesn't seem like you're in need of accessibility options to enjoy a game. Good for you. I too am blessed in that way.

Others aren't so lucky. If something as simple as a debug mode or a setting on a game allows someone to enjoy something they otherwise wouldn't be able to, I support it.

I understand others value developer "vision" and their personal feelings of "accomplishment" more so, though. Which is their perogative.

Hence why I said to just make sure it's on PC so those needing assistance can get it.

NoLifeLoser1886d ago

You won a lot of participation awards didnt you

Atom6661886d ago

No awards. But I continue to participate in two local and one regional nonprofits that have helped to enable kids (and adults) with technology needs.

Being a gamer myself, I've made it a special (personal) point to help raise funds and awareness aimed at fostering normalization and socialization of kids with disabilities through gaming in particular.

I'm sure if you wanted to participate in something similar, they'd welcome your assistance, BTF_1991. Just to warn you, that would mean you'd have to first remove your head from your own ass, but I believe in you!

You can play your game on whatever difficulty you want . No one is saying to turn the game into the spongebob game here.

garos821885d ago

and you can play any other game you want. there is no shortage of games for you to enjoy that actually have "journalism difficulty mode"

isarai1886d ago

The game should have whatever the devs want it to have. Not every game has to be made for everyone. If it wants to be a challenge, let it be. if that's too much for you, the game isn't for you, play something else.

why is that dumb? It's the same price everywhere else.

repsahj35d ago

Because it's Nintendo. Post negative first before analizing.

LiViNgLeGaCY34d ago

Because this is the ONLY version you can buy on the S2, correct? I don't think you can buy just the game for $60 like the other platforms. And if I'm wrong about this, then I take it back.

LiViNgLeGaCY34d ago

@repsahj - Dude, shut up. I like Nintendo a lot, actually. I just want the option to get the base game for $60 WITHOUT the DLC. I've done plenty of "analyzing".

Neonridr35d ago

Before anyone complains, this is the same price on PlayStation, Xbox and Steam. It comes with the Game and the DLC.

Elda35d ago

The game is $40 & the expansion is $40 so the price is right.

VersusDMC35d ago

The standard edition physical should have been 40 then with the expansion seperate. Why normalize 80 dollar games? Specially ports of old games.

If people accept this might as well make physical 80 dollar deluxe versions only.

repsahj35d ago

This $80 version is also available on PS5 and XSX.

VersusDMC34d ago

@repsahj

The ps5 has the standard version and the 80$ version so it gives you the choice...on switch 2 physical you can only buy the 80 dollar version.

I guess since they got the data that less than half of elden ring players beat the game and would probably not buy the DLC, they decided to just not make it an option and charge more...

GotGame81834d ago

Like it or not, the vast majority of game sales are digital. Just like movies, and music. At least Gamekey cards are shareable and you can sell them.
