Building Xbox Series X: why Microsoft redefined the console form factor

Eurogamer: "Undoubtedly the biggest surprise of The Game Awards back in December 2019 was Microsoft's decision to reveal Xbox Series X: the name, the branding - and most crucially, the form factor. It was a console quite unlike anything we'd seen before, possibly the most original home console design since Nintendo's GameCube way back in 2001. During our recent visit to the Microsoft campus in Redmond WA, we had a chance to meet key members of the hardware team that created this remarkable-looking device - and in the process, we gained a much better understanding of why Xbox Series X required a top to bottom revamp of the traditional console form factor."

Very interesting look at why the console is designed the way it as and how it's cooled.

MasterCornholio2259d ago

Very interesting. I hope they do something similar for the PS5 because in really curious to see how that cooling system will work.

SyntheticForm2259d ago

I'd be dishonest if didn't admit that both PS4s I've owned (launch and Pro) sounded like jets from the get-go. Still, they've never faltered which is admirable.

I really hope cooling and noise is a priority for Sony with PS5. There's always that small worry when I hear those fans roaring.

MasterCornholio2259d ago

I honestly don't believe that the PS4 had issues from overheating like the 360 did. Doesn't mean that it didn't get loud for some people. In my case I game with headphones so the sound of a console doesn't really concern me. However I can see why some people want a quiet system.

Livingthedream2259d ago

Lol what does the 360 overheating have to do with this hahahhaha lol, but yeah PS4 was always solid when I had one never had any issues

isarai2259d ago (Edited 2259d ago )

Reminds me, i gotta clean my pro, playing RDR2 got kinda ridiculous when i had to turn the volume up to hear clearly over the fan lol

SyntheticForm2259d ago

@Living

We're having an exchange about consoles and their cooling, ventilation, overheating, etc. I don't believe Cornholio's (lol) intentions were nefarious.

Naturally past precedents like (rrod) emerge because that's the material we have for comparison.

Relax.

MasterCornholio2259d ago (Edited 2259d ago )

@Living

I'm just pointing out that while the PS4 fans can be noisy that isn't an indication that it's overheating. The 360 is a perfect example of a loud console that had issues with overheating that lead to the RROD issues.

Like Synthetic said it's a classic example on how not to design a cooling system.

sinspirit2259d ago

PS4 never had an issue staying cool. The fans on certain models just ramp up to speed way before overheating temperatures. Tests always showed the PS4 to be well below necessary temps. Cooling won't be an issue. Noise was the issue, which they have clarified will be addressed and no longer an issue

TheSaint2259d ago

Try using four small blocks to raise it up slightly. Mine is rarely loud.

I hope they do a Halo limited edition

Atticus_finch2259d ago

Oh they will, I'm sure there will be multiple of those, no doubt.

littletad2259d ago

One of my biggest gripes with Xbox is that they never made limited edition consoles like the same way the ps4 did. Being aesthetically ugly hurt them just as much as having the weaker system. The ps4 looked like a cool futuristic piece of tech. Microsoft's looked like a damn VCR you forgot to throw out.

porkChop2259d ago

They did do LE XBO systems though.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH2259d ago (Edited 2259d ago )

I’m not sure what you’re smoking but MS had plenty LE consoles

littletad2259d ago (Edited 2259d ago )

Yes I know that, but they are fair low in number compared to the ps4's offerings. There is one for God of War, Uncharted 4, Death Stranding, and so many more. Xbox had the Gears and Call of Duty one. The most badass versions were limited and for prize giveaways. When the 360 had removable faceplates, they were pretty cool. People love having customization and aesthetically pleasing versions of the same tech. I currently have the gears of war 5 console LE version. It's great, but it was released far into the consoles lifespan. I'm not hating, I prefer Xbox, but they deserve this criticism. The original Xbox one was ugly as hell.

babadivad2259d ago

Yeah, they switched places from the previous gen. 360 used to get custom consoles all the tine while PS3 got relatively few.

darthv722259d ago

The 360 had way more special editions than xbo. I do have about 5 different special edition xbo but more than 10 special edition 360.

On the ps4 side i have 4 special editions.

DJStotty2257d ago (Edited 2257d ago )

Weaker system?

You need to take them glasses off and compare the one X to the PS4 Pro

@Darth

So you own at least 5 xbox one's, and over 10 xbox 360's? as well as 4 special edition playstation 4's

How big is your house?

I hope we get some transparent special editions of all consoles this time around. I love transparent electronics.

DJStotty2257d ago

I remember my crystal original xbox, with crystal controller, was awesome.

timotim2259d ago

So do I, but man I can't wait to see what special editions they come up with in general. The box's shape definitely lends itself to some cool designs.

babadivad2259d ago

Hope they have one at launch.

The coolest thing to me is that center aluminum mounting block and the fact that it's also ventilated cooling both sides of the boards

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio36d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing36d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9236d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit36d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing36d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9236d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
