Pokémon Doesn't Need A New Formula

All Pokémon ever needed was a rival, a professor, a pushy mom that wanted the house to herself, and a straight line from zero to champion.

As long as it's cute Nostalgic and Nintendo, everybody will eat it up.

King_Noctis2365d ago

You keep repeating the same crap on every Nintendo article dude. What are you trying to accomplish here?

telekineticmantis2365d ago

Why is it I can say something negative about anything else game related, except Nintendo. Everyone else just gives a counter argument, but with Nintendo you must accept any copy and paste game they give to you and shut up about it.

Old McGroin2365d ago

@ telekineticmantis

I agree. This is only my second Pokémon game and while I am enjoying it I'm finding the formula of travel to 8 gyms while collecting different Pokémon in the routes inbetween a bit dull now. It's ok but it could do with an actual story. Won't be getting the next one if it's just another copy and paste.

Sono4212365d ago

This article is right though, it doesn't need a new formula, it needs new developers.

King_Noctis2365d ago

"but with Nintendo you must accept any copy and paste game they give to you and shut up about it. "

How about other new games that were released this year exclusive to their console? What is your opinion on that?

RedDevils2365d ago (Edited 2365d ago )

They all still better than any Gamesfreak Made in the last 15 years. Tell me do you even felt disappointed with this new Pokemon games? This is no different from Fifa.

Ricegum2365d ago

RedDevils

Are you seriously comparing FIFA to Pokémon? Pokémon is heaps better than that yearly rehash.

Can I ask, have you even played Pokémon Sword or Shield?

King_Noctis2365d ago

“ This is no different from Fifa.”

Fifa is a yearly rehash full of microtransactions and lootboxes. Pokemon is a full experience minus any of that bs.

telekineticmantis2365d ago

Put it like this, when Nintendo creayes a successful new Franchise with new Characters, I'll give them credit.

People say the same thing for Dragon Quest

RosweeSon2365d ago

People say the same thing about everything Xbox, PlayStation, apple, anything popular there’s always people who just like to say nah that’s life their loss 🤷🏻‍♂️

phoenixwing2365d ago

Dragon quest isnt lazily made.

antikbaka212365d ago

Really? like REALLY?

Monster recolouring, music looping same tracks, basic locations of ps3 era, post game story AKA true ending which makes everything characters gone through (struggle, sacrafice, self improvem, ent) meneanless. It even breaks it's own time travelling rules.

Jesus, this game IS LAZY as hell.

RpgSama2365d ago

Dragon Quest XI It's One of the most feature and content complete games this generation, they over delivered in every single way, the post game it's basically an entire 40+ hours new adventure.

antikbaka212365d ago

as a person who never played DQ before 11... it's a bad game

I don't think people are asking for a complete overhaul of the formula. I've put in about 10 hours now and I am constantly amazed by the lack of effort that was put into modernizing the game at all. A game on a console that can play Breathe of the Wild no longer has any excuse to not have fully voiced cutscenes. It has no excuse to have the most basic of animation during those cutscenes. No excuse to still have graphics that resemble something coming out of the GameCube era.

If it wasn't for the main gameplay loop still being solid, I would have skipped this entry. But if this lack of effort is still present in the next entry, then I am definitely skipping it. I wanted a Pokemon game on my Switch so I could overlook the problems this time but they only get one pass from me.

I wouldn’t say it’s a problem of being too old-fashioned, because I’m sure as heck open to change, so long as it’s the right change. No, the core of the formula doesn’t need to change, but fun additions have been great in the past.

Restrictions that weren’t present in past games are never a good thing regardless of the series and they’re not great here. A current-gen and first mainline console Pokémon game should have been better, especially at the full console new release price per version.

Sure, the core of Pokémon is here, and that’s great for casual fans, but Sword and Shield are just a disappointment compared to past entries.

Brazz2365d ago (Edited 2365d ago )

Doesn't need new formula, but sure need more polish and lots of work! Pokemon is one of the largest ip in the world and gamefreak need to step up theirs standars for the series, sword and shield is a major let down, imho.

execution172365d ago

Probably doesn't need to change the formula but could use some modern gameplay features like voice overs for cutscenes and gym leaders, open world to tackle the gyms in any order, way better battle animations and no low res textures

funny how the 3d games are not in the top 5 haha

Giga_Gaia654d ago

It should be:
1) Gold/Silver/Crystal
2) Red/Blue/Yellow
3) Ruby/Saphire/Emerald

The rest can be put in any order you want.

Rutaprkl654d ago

No way original Gen 1 games are better than R/S/E

Rutaprkl654d ago

I liked Sword/Shield (Which didn't even make the list) way more than Scarlet/Violet, but everyone has opinions.

Inverno654d ago (Edited 654d ago )

IMO I think S&S is better because it's more visually appealing due to it's nice backdrops and linearity, but it was still meh. I couldn't bother finishing Scar/Vio, they managed to make an even more boring broken game only 2 games after S&S and that's quite impressive.

jambola654d ago

the amount of games with forced exp share making this list is depressing
even games like ranger or colleseum/ XD
or mystery dungeon, way more deserving
