Pokémon Sword and Shield – Dynamax is Maximum Cringe

Ever since Pokémon X and Y introduced mega evolution, Pokémon has been looking for ways to change the battle system in the franchise. After Mega Evolution came Z-Moves in Pokémon Sun and Moon, and now in the run-up to the release of Pokémon Sword and Shield on November 15, Dynamax has been revealed as the next game play mechanic to throw our balls at. Problem is, too many ingredients ruins the poffin, and the Pokémon game play is becoming heavily saturated with underwhelming ideas.

After 11 years it looks like Jigglypuff’s Final Smash is officially canon now

"There’s no denying Mega Evolution was a fantastic idea."

I do actually. Mega Evolution was great when we saw Mega Absol and Mega Mawile but then we got Mega Evos for Pokemon that were already powerful like Gengar, Alakazam and Salamence. A good idea ruined by giving all the special toys to Pokemon that were already in the OU tier.

Z-Moves were far better because they were far more balanced. You could honestly delete Mega-evos from the game and I wouldn't shed a single tear.

"but the novelty wore off pretty quickly, particularly as Sun and Moon were one of the weakest generations of Pokémon."

Get out. Regional forms and Z-moves > Pokemon X & Y.

It was the worst part about the trailer for me, I was watching it and I thought "Wow this looks pretty decent, not a gimmick in sight" and BAM...there it was.

Like if you kept something like it for the Gym battles and they did it so they made huge holograms of the Pokemon you had in front of you then it would be a cool idea but it's just getting tiring now, every Pokemon features a gimmick that will be done a little bit in this game but then forgotten as they move onto the next gen

Mega Evolutions, Primal Evolutions, Z Moves, Ultra Beasts etc...give it a rest Gamefreak, why can't we just have a traditional Pokemon game which focuses more on other things. Focus more on the open world, more good Pokemon designs, more dynamic things on the map, bigger cities, more side quests, more towns and so on.

I don't think you can call dynamax a gimmick. Like it literally doesn't lineup with the definition.

"Like if you kept something like it for the Gym battles and they did it so they made huge holograms of the Pokemon you had in front of you then it would be a cool idea"

... But that's literally a gimmick. It changes nothing but the visual. Makes for a good attention grabber but in no way improves or adds to the experience.

It’s a gimmick but it’s not a gimmick which is exploited and is used outside the gyms. It’s contained. Maybe you can turn it off, have it optional, not a part of the entire game

I somewhat agree with your point. That aside, I will say the same thing I say every time about target audience. Sure, there are many people who get deep into the battle system (online battles, tournaments etc..) and dynamax seems silly (it kind of is) but the audience they are targeting isnt that group. It's my 8 year old and 4 year old who I swear I saw their eyeballs pop put of their heads in excitement to see a giant diglett. Again I get where you are coming from, but we are the little people here. Nintendo knows they just got 2 cartridges out of me when my kids saw that damn giant pokemon.

For me it felt as jarring as seeing turning huge being a big gimmick is Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash

Except with that’s it’s a forgettable spinoff. Here’s it’s being promoted in a mainline title like it’s the hottest thing since Alolan forms

Kaiju Pokemon... I'm down for it.

funny how the 3d games are not in the top 5 haha

Giga_Gaia661d ago

It should be:
1) Gold/Silver/Crystal
2) Red/Blue/Yellow
3) Ruby/Saphire/Emerald

The rest can be put in any order you want.

No way original Gen 1 games are better than R/S/E

Rutaprkl661d ago

I liked Sword/Shield (Which didn't even make the list) way more than Scarlet/Violet, but everyone has opinions.

Inverno660d ago (Edited 660d ago )

IMO I think S&S is better because it's more visually appealing due to it's nice backdrops and linearity, but it was still meh. I couldn't bother finishing Scar/Vio, they managed to make an even more boring broken game only 2 games after S&S and that's quite impressive.

the amount of games with forced exp share making this list is depressing
even games like ranger or colleseum/ XD
or mystery dungeon, way more deserving
